That's how I started on sailing when I was a teenager in Puerto Rico (I'm now 54 yrs old). Getting a bunch of my buddies and racing Sunfish and Lasers around the marker buys. Ahh, I miss those good ole days!!! 😊

I raced my Snipe "Witch of Endor", #14139 for a number of years. She was the absolute fastest thing on the water without an engine, until Lasers came along. Fast, very seaworthy, tough, and so much fun!

I'm the current and eight time Snipe Canadian Champion and I was pleasantly surprised to see this episode. I have sailed Snipes since 1968 and have sailed for Canada at five Snipe World Championships. I started following your videos a year or so back when I decided it was time for this lifelong dinghy racer to get a bluewater boat and head offshore. Your videos have been helpful and entertaining. It looks like I will be making an offer on my thirty something foot boat next spring. Most likely a Crealock or Perry design. I will echo Ryan's comment below and invite you to come race Snipes with us at Guelph. The Church of Tuesday Night Racing begins as soon as the ice is out. Keep on making your vids. You're good at it. Harri

I forgot to say that I have sailed just about every dinghy out there and while they all have their attributes nothing sails like a Snipe. It is truly a beautifully designed boat.

For the second time today (weirdly) I’ll say - the size of the boat is inversely proportional to how much it’s used. I learned on a Javelin, love sailing dinghy’s and small boats, or getting my kids out in Hobies, 420s, Sunfish etc. Thanks for doing what you do!

"Boats with no following" have the big advantage that you can get one for a lot cheaper. My Hughes 40 was a lot less than a 30' Allied Seawind would have been, because those have a following. (I'm lucky that there actually is a group of owners on Facebook, including two others in my club's basin.)

I really am enjoying your channel, and am glad you do the "passion niche." Probably because I agree with your passion, especially for the old, timeless designs like the Snipe. I have a Blue Jay now, which is what I started on soon after we moved from stone tablets to papyrus, but I still have a great story about the time a Snipe head-hunted us in the Blue Jay and we handed her her transom.

Great video! I grew up racing in Lake Erie where we had Stars, Thistles, Lightnings, Fireballs and Rhodes Bantams to name a few classes. Each boat had its strong point(s) of sail and favorite conditions. We raced within a given class but also on a handicapped basis for Best in Fleet honors. Big boats are a lot of fun, but it’s hard to beat flying along just a few inches from the water!

I picked up a Catalina 14.2 Keel and it’s a hoot. I’ve learned so much and every old timer tells me “big boats are much easier”.

My father owned a Snipe before World War II. While he was in the Pacific the boat yard where he had it stored went under and the boat disappeared. He had the sails. He kept.them and they came with us every time we moved. When mom broke up the house after his death, I took up the family tradition and every time move the sails came with me. As a result I have an 80 year old set of cotton sails for a Snipe in nearly perfect condition.

Those sails are heirlooms to a bygone era. On a light air day you should hoist them up for a short sail.

I love your attempts to identify "real sailors". Sadly times have changed. As prices inflate " moving up " becomes more difficult. We need a market for Laser and Snipe sailors looking to buy an affordable simple, capable, family sailboat like a Niagara 26 or similar. Many, many economical boats are out there like G 26's, C&C 27's, CS 27's but shoddy production issues discourage potential buyers. There is a huge gap between the beach boats and the Beneteau's.

Got an old Snipe from a local sailing club. They hadn’t used it in years and it was flipped over across the street, basically in a ditch. Kevin has needed a lot of love, but she shall be back sailing next season!

Consider doing an episode on compac yachts. Curious if you saw many sailing around the Bahamas. Current manufacturer that is selling new boats unlike many boats that are out of production.

Hopefully one day you will get to sail in San Francisco Bay. We have a lot of OD fleets. Many with 20, 30 or even 40 boats on the start line. We have single handed races with 300 boats.

I looked hard at getting a Snipe for years when I was living in Cleveland (home of the "blender" fleet), and nearly built one myself. Then I moved away, and I haven't lived anywhere with a Snipe fleet since. Here it's Wayfarers and Albacores.

The Atlanta Yacht Club on Lake Allatoona has a Snipe fleet. I've heard that's where Ted Turner learned to sail although I can't confirm that. Yeah the Snipe is a fun little boat. :D

Everything your said about one design and the Snipe is so true. I do have to say, I do not think the J boats are a good example - the trouble with J's just as they get a new design out and up and going they turn around and make another boat before the last one is on a solid footing. Really how much difference is there between a J105 and 109 (I guess the wheel vs tiller) and how deep are those fleets? If you want to dive into cheaper one design boats with active fleets how about Thistles and Scots - Same designer - Just a thought from the cheap seats.

I just purchase an old snipe - it has been dormant for several years but looks to be in good condition. I am believe its a 2002 - If anyone has a way of doing research for older manuals so I can find out what parts I need to get it going again. I do plan on going to the next snipe race in Miami to get more information on the best way to get this one set up.
