Warp Spider was also my first thought seeing this! Would have definitely looked like one if it was painted red and black!(love the scheme it has though)

You can definitely see some design choices here that got carried forward into Warp Spiders, but like the 1st draft of a book, the 1st edition of a game shows that the developers were still exploring what they wanted the game to be.

There's a similar plastic head for Dark Eldar for the first plastic kit of jet bikes I believe.
