As the narrator explains what is going on; I can’t help but remember the movie “American Sniper”. The words were few, however when asked about the 160 or so people he had eliminated it was his response that touched the core of my heart, he was sorry for The Brother in Arms he couldn’t save… Sadly this is the reality of war. I admire and have great respect for these soldiers who put their lives on the line for Country, family and their Brother in. God shield and protect every Defender of Ukraine. For all their preparation, I’m shocked that they were smoking. You can smell that for miles.

Not quite so. You do not take into account the fact that all the soldiers around are also smoking, both their own and those of others. So you won't be able to smell a cigarette a mile away if your neighbor in the trenches is smoking. In short, it doesn't work that way in a big war.

I think they set up their position and then went back to the trenches to wait for the fog. The trenches are in treelines. Everybody knows where they are.

You think smoking smells for miles? Are you European? That isn't how it works at all. If anything, there is an IR signature, but Russians are so poor they don't have cams to capture that.

Yes, you can smell it a long way-off. With wind, any kind makes it difficult to tell where it’s coming from. Much in the same way, with a single gunshot.

too bright for night vision to work well (you just see bright green) and too dark for normal optics

Lighter up high while darker on the ground, ambient illumination spectrum is shifted, plus long shadows across landscape with faster ambient light changes, plus morning fog, plus unstable air currents and higher wind speeds at altitude. Both visual spectrum and IR have greater challenge. Rising sun detracts observer in the westerly zone looking easterly, setting sun detracts observer in the easterly zone looking westerly. Scout teams plan accordingly and take advantages as required.

Optics have a "range" that they can see. Think of daytime and nighttime optics as different ranges but there is little overlap. The drone struggles to adjust for either day time or night time. The cheaper the drone the more struggle the drone has. More advanced drones have optics that easily overlap day time and night time.
