*I was 23, and dating a girl who looked JUST like Larraine Newman (and she **_hated_** the comparison). SNL was put up with no fanfare, no warning: it just appeared one night and was an instant hit. It didn't last though, by 1980 it long since stopped being funny, and everyone I knew had long stopped bothering.*

As a kid n '70's Belushi was my hero, & I was devastated by his death, but knew the punk band FEAR was his fave band when he died & fought w/ director of "Neighbors" 2 get them on soundtrack (can c their legendary performance & banning on SNL here on YT!). In mid 2000's b4 KZbin & many knew this fact, I caught FEAR at a club & knew what the last song always was so I hid out in the bathroom next 2 the stage & when they walked off stage I walked out & back stage w/ their enterouge! I went up 2 singer Lee Ving & gave him a big hug & kiss expecting 2 get stomped, but instead he was the coolest mofo u could meet, & I asked him about Belushi & he proceeded 2 talk about some of their times together! Was a dream come true, & the closest I'll ever get 2 the Master! RIP, Belushi, THE GOAT!!!!🙏 🤘😎❤

I was only 11 years old and watched the first episode of Saturday Night Live as we called it. And it was because George Carlin was the host, he was a favorite comedian of mine. A cousin had me listen to his albums and he was funny, to me. Then I continue to watch it every Saturday night. RIP those that passed on

I remember the first episode of Saturday Night Live. In 1975 I was 8. My big brother was 15 and he got permission to invite a few friends over to watch, and I begged to be allowed to sit with him and his friends to watch. He had talked NON STOP about how excited he was about the debut of the show. We took a pass at attending church that first Sunday morning to be able to watch that first ever episode. I won't lie most of the jokes went over my head. But I would laugh along with them. Then after they all left he and I sat up and he explained what he could. We stayed up until 2 in the morning. We quoted lines all week until the following Saturday Night. I remember he told me not to repeat Sir Douche Bag. Otherwise my SNL days would be done until I was in junior high. Lol I couldn't say douche it came out dootch. But that worked until Mom figured out what I meant by Sir Dootch Bag.

That was not in the first episode, I don't even think that sketch was in the first season. And the first season and a half it wasn't called Saturday Night Live, it was called, and announced by Don Pardo as, "NBC's Saturday Night". For the first season and a half they couldn't call it SNL because of the ABC show called Saturday Night Live With Howard Cosell, which Bill Murray was actually a writer on, he wasn't an original cast member like people think, he actually joined the show once it became SNL, I believe on the very first episode that used that title as a matter of fact, after the Howard Cosell show went off the air halfway through the second season and Lorne Micheal hired him, also at the same time Lorne Micheal got the rights to the name SNL which he'd wanted all along but couldn't get because of Cosell's show on ABC. Believe it or not Billy Crystal was an original cast member who under the advice of his agent walked off the set 15 minutes before the fist show aired over an unresolved dispute with Lorne Micheal, Crystal would of course return in the 1980's as a regular cast member. Also most people don't know that part of the original cast was Jim Henson's Muppets and that the first episode was the world's introduction to to them, it was the first time anyone had ever seen Muppets although the one's on the show weren't the same characters like Kermit and Miss Piggy that had their own show several years later, and while creative they weren't really a good fit on the show, Belushi hated them and called them the Mucking Fuppet's. I own the first two seasons on DVD, the very first episode ever was hosted by George Carlin and the first musical guest was Billy Preston performing Nothing From Nothing and man did he knock it out of the park, if you ask me it's the greatest performance ever on the show and he set a benchmark everyone else has been chasing after ever since, don't look for it on KZbin, Lorne Micheal obviously won't give permission to play it although he should, far as I'm concerned his performance that night is a national treasure and everyone should be allowed to see it, it alone is worth buying the first season for. Read the book Live From New York if you want to learn just about everything there is to know about SNL, things like Billy Crystal being an original cast member that walked 15 minutes before the first show aired causing them to scramble and change everything for that first episode, and Milton Berle exposing himself behind the scenes to one of the original cast ladies, apparently he was really proud of that thing and would show it to anyone. Everything in the book is firsthand from all the original surviving cast members, the interviews in it go all the way through the different generations of casts and up to about 10 years ago or so, it's a fantastic read especially the accounts from everyone from the first 5 seasons.

Thanks, for this memory, I remember SNL with it's over the top no holds barred humor. We always had to turn down the volume on the TV when our parents was sleeping. Because if the volume level didn't wake them up, us laughing so hard or stomachs hurt did! After the original cast left I rarely watch the show except for when Eddie Murphy was onboard. This show always did have some of the best writers in the business and a knack for finding very talented people to fill any voids left open. The original cast of SNL will always be the best and will never be outdone!

I remember I was 15yrs old in 1975! I loved "Roseanne Rosanada" & "Emily Letela"(the older lady hard of hearing) "Violins against the elder" they would correct it's "VIOLENCE AGAINST......" and she would say: "NEVER MIND"! Both Characters by the late great GILDA RADNER! I also when to the Theater to see "HANKY PANKY" with GENE WILDER I think that's were they met. Let me tell that movie was exciting in a "PINK CESSNA AIRPLANE" that look like they were about to crash! Those scenes! It was like a chase! I think that is the one DIRECTED BY SIDNEY POITIER! I LIKED IT! But I think the critics did not. But what do they know. They say you should go by "word of mouth" because critics are "wanna be Actors" that never made it. I liked also when they did the movie "Spoofs" like from "JAWS" a shark knocking on the door. They would open the door AND GET THEIR HEAD BIT OFF!!! THAT WAS SO FUNNY! I enjoyed GILDA RADNER CHARACTERS THE MOST! I forgot her Private School Girl with the glasses & the nasal drip & how Bill Murray would would give her bops on her head & the dialogue was funny too! I stopped watched it years ago! Always like an Album "THE DEBUT IS ALWAYS THE BEST" Then I heard about all the deaths & drug usage and really stopped watching. And when I did (in my opinion) they were never as funny as "The Original Cast".😁❤👍

Chevy Chase made his career on SNL for his pratfalls in the character of then president G. Ford. How is SNL today? Have there been any attempts at the same physical humor for portraying the guy in the studio across the street from the White House today?
