Powered or granulated Citric Acid can be bought very cheaply, citric acid only reacts with the rust, doesn't react with the steel like vinegar (Acetic Acid). Not sure if the salt is needed though, they came out great. I use a scouring pad to clean the residue off. Great vlog John, and thanks for sharing.

In addition to citric acid, lemon juice contains ascorbic acid (Vitamin C). Ascorbic acid is a reducing agent. Rust is primarily hydrated ferric oxide. Ferric gets reduced to ferrous, a good thing. "Straight" citric acid may well be adequate, but lemon juice has a double action.

@@eliduttman315 I never knew about the Absorbic acid, the residue from citric acid reaction to rust is a pain to deal with, is it Ferrous Magnetite or similar?. I will definitely try some lemon juice, or maybe purchase Absorbic acid to try with my several kilogrammes of citricc acid. Very interesting, thanks for sharing.

It's maybe also worth mentioning that as you sharpen the drill check it is being sharpened evenly by measuring the lip length or length of cutting edge. you need to use equal passes on both sides once you form the even length cutting lips If not the drill will drill a hole double the length of the longest lip. I also remember being shown this as an apprentice nearly 40 years ago now.

Very nice drill sharpener John... I was hoping to see you try & use the blue one.
@samrodian9195 жыл бұрын
John, I have always found it pays to reduce the chisel point first because it is easy to accidentally grind off the cutting edge when you are looking at the other side, so if you do it first then before you sharpen the primary cutting edge it doesn't matter. Nice quality drill that. On the rust removal, i use high strength vinegar (20%, household is usually 5%) and it works a treat with the salt added. I put my rusted stuff in a sealed tub, weeks at a time and when taken out and brushed there is not a scrap of rust at all. I had a wing type pair of wrought iron dividers that were my dad's,and they were very badly rusted, two weeks in the vinegar salt solution and they came bout as if the blacksmith made them yesterday.

Hi John, thanks for another great video. You can also use white vinegar to get rid of rust. It can also be used to sharpen old files.

It appears your bit walks to the side when you start the cut each time. Guessing that one side needs a bit more off to get it going straight. Hate to drill crooked and oversized bores.15:15 watch it in 2x speed and its easy to see.

John hi, you can also use phosphoric acid .
@bostedtap83995 жыл бұрын
Phosphoric acid leaves behind a tough layer difficult to remove on precision components, great for those that are cosmetic etc.

Evaporust is available on ebay but its quite expensive. The good thing about it is it is not harmful to your skin and can be reused over and over. I have some just leave the part soaking for a few hours and rinse with water works a treat.
