100,000 Views... Thanks guys. Let me explain my opinion on this whole "Overwatch to Paladins" comparison nonsense... I've played both Overwatch and Paladins; I have about 100 hours in Paladins, a little more in Overwatch; truth to be told is that they are two different games... two different flavors. I wouldn't say that one copied ideas from the other, nor that they "copy" any other video games that came before them. It's very easy to think of a game concept, then to point out similarities to it in other games. Over the past decades game development has been speeding up faster than before, and with development of new games comes overlapping ideas and concepts. You can go ahead and prove to others that Global Agenda was the inspiration for Paladins abilities, or use Blizzard's previous idea of "Titan" to prove or disprove its authenticity. What it boils down to is that you should play what you enjoy, and be happy doing so. Spreading hate towards fan groups that you don't exactly agree with is no way to live. The point of this video was to give visual aid to people who have compared certain abilities between the two games in the past. I certainly don't see the relation between some of these comparisons, but that wasn't the point. Some people are visual learners, and this was made to assist those people. I do not intend to spread hate or judgement to either one of these groups of avid video gamer players. I sincerely apologize if I did. Fract No offence but you seem to have gone through a great amount of effort to make some of these moves appear more similar than they actually are. Androxus can dash in 360 degrees yet you compared it to Tracers blink in one direction. You also made Reinhardt charge into a wall to shorten the length so it appears closer in distance to Fernandos dash. Reinhardt shield can rotate completely around him while Nandos a shield is locked to where he's facing. I'm sorry but I don't believe you when you say this video wasn't meant to spread hate.

theomegarose, I see why you say that, and honestly it's my fault because I am a lazy editor. To explain: Take the Fernando/Reinhardt shield comparison. I recorded Paladins footage first, then tried my best to match the length of the file when recording Overwatch. I shortened the length of Reinhardt's charge not to make the abilities appear more similar than they are, but so that I wouldn't have to do any extra cuts or editing work on the footage. You can use this when comparing any other abilities as well. I just tried to match the lengths of each piece of footage. I'm sorry if this came across as me trying to deceive you, or anyone else.

Paladins has a "WoW" style (magic, wizards, spells, old places, etc) And Overwatch has that "Portal" feeling and style (technology, futuristic environments, advanced weapons, etc) I say this because no matter how the characters and their habilities are nearly the same, the most important thing is that Paladins has his own style and artwork, Overwatch too, so both games are awesome. Thats my oppinion.

Overwatch has way better graphics, polish, lighting etc. while paladins has the ability for champions to be diverse. How I play Talus or Ying is very different to how the next player does. This is due to loudout cards, items and abilities. Personally, the beautiful look on overwatch isn’t enough to keep me on it, polish and lighting can only go so far.

After looking through the comments a bit, I have this to say. In terms of characters, both games were made and released at roughly the same time, so most of the characters that happen to act similarly is either a coincidence or they both borrow from the same thing. A lot of it can be contributed to popular MOBAs, such as... (Makoa and Roadhog) The act of using a hook or anchor to pull someone towards you. (Tracer, Androxus, Meave, and Genji) The act of dashing quickly, either toward an enemy as a means of attack, or away as a means of escape. (Inara and Mei) Summoning a wall or other object to block an enemy path. (Reaper, Grohk, Seris, and Mal Damba (to an extent)) Temporarily becoming intangible as a form of escape. (Evie and Mei) Using their element to surround and protect themselves. (Doomfist and Drogoz) Punching things with your fist. Sometimes, they're taken from another game, like Team Fortress 2. (Barik and Torbjorn) Both are like The Engineer where they spawn turrets in order to do the bulk of their damage. With Barik focusing a low build time but low damage (like Engineer's mini turret), and Torbjorn focusing on High build time but high damage (like Engie's default Level 3, they even both use rockets). (Skye and Sombra) Both are like The Spy in which they sneak around while invisible. Sombra focuses more so on sabotaging that enemy team with her hacking like Spy with his sapper, and Skye focuses more on weakening the enemy team by killing key team mates like snipers and Supports like the Spy does with his cloak and back stab. I could keep going, but I doubt most have read this far. Overall, drawing inspiration from another company or rival company isn't a bad thing. Neither Paladins or Overwatch borrow so much from one another or other games that they should be considered rip offs. Sonic isn't considered a rip off of Mario because they're are both 2D platformers. Mortal Kombat isn't considered a rip off of Street Fighter because they are both 2D Fighting games. Halo isn't a rip off of Call of Duty because they're both First Person Shooters. Paladins shouldn't be considered a rip off of Overwatch... Overwatch shouldn't be considered a rip off of Paladins... ...because they're both Team Based Shooters.

Pasting a comprehensive list of reasons why I personally prefer Paladins to Overwatch here from another video, simply because most people on the Overwatch side of things don't know anything about Paladins except for misleading things like this video. Paladins is better balanced in general (Health ratios, TTK, etc, although it's currently in an odd recovery spot from OB64) Overwatch has worse balance but is prettier(when standing still), and was marketed bigger and better. (2500 hours TF2, 1000 hours Paladins, ~300 hours Overwatch) (Overwatch's ingame tracker is inaccurate, so it's probably more than that) Paladins' highest HP character is 2.5x the HP of the lowest HP character. Overwatch's highest HP character is 4x the HP of the lowest HP character. (Effectively 6x counting self heal, effectively 9x counting 50% damage reduction during said selfheal.) Paladins healing on one of its best healers averages at 750/s single target (To compare to OW, just divide by 10) Overwatch healing on its most similar character (Moira) is 80-110/s multi target. Paladins, even with their weaker healing, has a built in means to opt to reduce the value of healing Overwatch, outside of picking Ana, does not-- And Ana is not a valid excuse for not having such an option. In the current dive state of the game, Ana simply doesn't have enough in her kit to defend herself effectively against more than a single target every 10s. Lack of Ana and overvalue of healing contribute to a massive problem of Frontline TTK being too high and "squishy" TTK being too low or even instant, because damage numbers are inflated in order to provide threat to the frontlines and the huge HP shields. Paladins' supports have CC, utility, healing, and in general are intended to defend themselves by disabling enemies, buffing allies, or using movement abilities to flee bad situations. Overwatch's supports overwhelmingly do not have CC outside of Ana's sleep, have a sole purpose of healing, are intended to defend themselves through damage alone, and overwhelmingly have very little utility or buffs, obvious exceptions being Discord orb, Speed, and the largely neglected Damage Boost on Mercy. The fact that the list of CC, utility, and buff abilities from Overwatch's supports is as low as 4 is quite possibly the most extreme failing of Overwatch. Don't even get me started on the fact that Symmetra is listed in the support category despite doing absolutely nothing that a support role should. Paladins has fairly clear and concise visual design, and the movement never feels like a slough Overwatch has horribly unoptimized visual design(Name one person who likes looking through Moira ult, or Winston's massive array of effects, or the fact that half the maps are the same shade of red as the enemy outlines, etc) as well as horribly gimped default movement to attempt (and fail) to account for the fact that its ground movement has no momentum startup (Movement in Overwatch is so quick, almost instant, that it starts before character animations can. This means that when simply mashing A+D, your character essentially moonwalks-- Their animations fully desync from their direction of motion. Awful design.) So there you have it, if you really wanted reasons that someone would prefer Paladins over Overwatch, you can have them. I think Overwatch has potential. I really do. But these are massive stumbling blocks for it and they ruin the ability to enjoy the game for me. Not to mention that as a result of the movement issues as noted in the last point, fights are inconsistent, and in order to cater to lower skill players' experiences, Blizzard gave low skill requisite 1shots to a large portion of the cast, trivializing combat in order to ignore the significant problems with the feel of the gunplay.

As an aside as to why the video is misleading, comparing individual abilities cross game will *always* be a manipulative tactic. That'd be like me going to League of Legends, taking a bunch of ability footage from random characters, and pairing it to Overwatch characters. I'm sure Overwatch took inspiration from MOBA games and the like, practically certain. But I'm also certain that even though they share identical abilities, that they did not copy those games. Rather, these things have been staple abilities and icons in ability/magic/etc centric games from the getgo. Also on the side, people tend to forget that Paladins is not HiRez's only title-- The character designs and ability pools are largely reflected on in Smite, another title under HiRez, and one of the characters (Grover) even hails directly from Smite. When the characters, game, and goals play entirely differently and then someone tries to sell it to you as the same thing, they're manipulating you. Do some research yourself and you might be surprised.

Unie lol not defending paladins from the characters they did definitely copy, but you’re wrong here. Paladins releases characters far more frequently then OVW does, once a month like most others hero based games except ovw. Skye was out before sombra was even teased and it took almost a year for her to be released after her first tease. Besides neither game invented the stealth mechanic and the only other similarity between sky and sombra are a similar weapon so saying one copied the other is just being Vein. Now with the likes of Fernando, there’s no excusing that. He has the exact same move set as rein just with a different ult. Paladins did take a lot from overwatch with there early characters but as I said they are releasing characters a lot more often then overwatch and haven’t made a character anything like a over character in a long time, and some of the things in this video that paladins did have even been changed. Regardless paladins is better as the longer time to kill fits better for a team shooter the characters feel more diverse from one another, the maps make it more fair for both teams, and the developers actually make regular balance changes and content additions that keep the game going. Why do you think overwatchs fan base is just slowing falling off while paladins just keeps getting bigger, and the game isn’t even out of open beta yet.

*The History of Paladins:* Global Agenda, a class based Shooter/MMO game, was started in 2005 as the studio’s first project. The Global Agenda design was inspired by Tribes (Jetpacks, Weapons), City of Heroes (cool Abilities, instanced PvE missions), and TF2 (Classes, Instanced PvP, weapon types). The initial idea was how to make a City of Heroes type mmo/game with real shooting. Global Agenda was released in 2010 and we learned many lessons from it. It had too many features and game modes for us to be able to maintain enough depth into each one (5 different PvP modes, AvA, Solo/Co-Op PvE, Raids, Double agent, open world missions as well as complex MMO features like crafting, auction system, AVA world map, and much more) Global Agenda was no longer generating much revenue even after some later expansions were released (like Sandstorm) and we started looking at alternative games we could create One group began working on a new Tribes game (which became Tribes: Ascend) while another group started working on a third-person moba game (which became Smite). In 2012 we started another project named Aurum (AU), it was a Fantasy based Global Agenda PvP like game and the first inspiration for Paladins. You can see from the video link below how the style is cartoony fantasy. In Paladins (code name Chaos) pre-production, we experimented with both the Global Agenda Sci-Fi theme and the Aurum Fantasy theme. After a lot of testing the project team decided to go with the Fantasy theme. Overwatch was announced. We were shocked and not sure what direction to take. We were already so far along with Paladins, but we didn't want to compete directly against Blizzard. We initially tried to find different ways to differentiate on game-play (different TTK, different style maps and game modes, different theme, etc), but the feedback from our tests, stats, and surveys showed that only a small part of our population was enjoying that style of game. In the end we said screw it and just made what we thought best, and closest to our original vision, even if people would think it's too close to Overwatch. We created almost all the Paladins classes and abilities using Global Agenda and Smite as our template. We used our Aurum fantasy theme from 2012 and Smite characters as placeholders (although some like Grover the tree just stayed). As a last point, it would be almost impossible for a studio of our size to 'clone' Overwatch in a year, but Overwatch did have some nice features that we decided to incorporate into Paladins (Kill Cam, Improved Lag comp, some verbiage like 'eliminations')

I played Paladins before Overwatch and I like it but still I prefer Overwatch because • They’re many modes in the Arcade and you can make a custom game mode. I personally like both games and enjoyed both of them, but the fact that the fans keep comparing these game to the other can really get you down... If we apply the same logic to other games then that would mean COD is a copy of Battlefield or vice versa... We have been living in a day of age where we have the power to bring people together by just pressing buttons, and it could've been great (or atleast better than the past) if it weren't for toxic communities.. We humans have co-existed with each other before but why break down now when we're so close to a new era of change... So the whole idea of “stealing” isn’t very relevant because those types of characters have been around since before overwatch. The games are very different. One thing I think Paladins does better than Overwatch is their supports. After being a Mercy main for a while and being nerfed 13 times, I discoved Furia which is a support but she feels impactful. The supports in Paladins feels like you are impactful and not just a heal bot. Both are team based games but I feel like in OW the supports are too reliant on the team, while in Paladins I can do a ton of damage, keep my team up, and feel like I'm doing something which feels awesome and like a hero. Although I just recently downloading the game. Any advice for it ? :)

TL:DR: Almost all of the mechanics are in pre-existing games or Smite. I'm also going to post this as a separate comment because I spent way to much time on it because I have no life(this was originally a rely). This comment isn't directed at this video uploader(who has a more neutral stance in this case by the looks, I'd suggest reading his comment if you haven't already), but explaining to those that claim Paladins is a copy how if that is the case, the Overwatch have been copying other games, Such as COD, Tf2 and Smite. Basically, doing the same thing with OW as was done with Paladins in this video(also explaining the root of some of Paladins mechanics). Then lets look through this video with a fine comb then and make the connections. Fernando: Is similar to Reinhardt, touche, though charges are not an original idea and Xing Tian in Smite has a 'fireball'(it's in the shape of his face tho), and one way shields were already present in games like Halo. Androxus has very little to do with any of the Overwatch characters besides having a revolver(clearly copying red dead redemption). Fan the hammer was also later removed because it was a bad ability, his dash is similar to Nemesis dash in Smite. Makoa: His hook is basically a Sylvanus pull from Smite Torvald: A laser that tracks people is a poor comparison, since that already in other games such as Defiance and Tf2s medi-beam. And giving a Shield to allies is exactly the same as one of Gebs abilities(Smite). Drogoz: Not only was this Scalie out before OW was released, but both him and Pharah are based on the Tf2 soldier, who can do the same thing as either of them with rocket jumps and the base jumper. Barik: Also out before OW. But again, both him and Torbyorn are based on the Tf2 engineer(Barik even has a skin based on him). Also, Vulcan from Smite. Bomb King: Again, another Tf2 comparison. Demoman. Buck+Winston: About a third of Smite gods have damaging leaps, Odin for example. Evie: This is taken from a older version of one of Smite's relics, Aegis Amulet. The old version would stop you from moving but make you immune to damage, making it similar to Ice block. Also, Evies ult is move of a cross between a Bakasura and Skadi ult(also Smite). Grokh: Terra monolith(Smite). And Ghost walk is visually similar to Osiris passive, while being functionally similar to a Chang'e Moonlight Waltz(Smite). Grover+Lucio: A healing aura- Meditation, Sovereignty(smite). Outhbound Paladin in Neverwinter also has a nearly identical ability. Not to mention that Grover is literally in Smite(sylvanus). Toche on the ult though, it used to be like a more deadly Xing Tian ult, but then they changed it. Walls: Ymir, Cabraken, Terra(Smite) Kinnessa+Widowmaker: Both based on Tf2 sniper. Lex: Dual wielding high recoil single handed weapons. Nothing original about that in any way shape or form, ironically, Warframe had the AkLex(Akimbo Lex) which were basically twin Deagles. Maeve+Genji: A dash is not original nor are throwing weapons. Might as well say they're both based on Tf2 Scout as well, since they pretty much are(double jump, throwing weapons(Cleaver, and Baseballs). Pip: Splash healing potions? Not an original idea either, off the top of my mind I can think of Minecraft and Guild wars 2 which have this mechanic. Ruckus: Tf2 heavy for the weapons, and the dashes of each character work differently(Overwatch doesn't have a multi direction dash for instance, though Smite does, eg Thoth, Achilles, Rama) Seris: Worst comparison to date, considering that Skye goes invisible and was out before Sombra was(Sombra even has a similar aesthetic). Seris's invis also makes her immune as well. Also, Loki(smite). As for the pulls which are present in the kits of Seris, Orisa and Zarya, those are all present in Smite: Ares and Hades. Tyra: Both 'copied' from COD. Nade launchers and ARs aren't particularly special. Bomb King+Junkrat: Also from Cod, they had that little explosive remote control buggy. And that's about it for the ones in this video. I think the whole reason that Paladins got this stigma is because both games were released at about the same time but Overwatch was released by Blizzard, a much larger company than Hi-Rez Studios. OW was praised as "the first class based shooter", but this is not the case. Tf2 and Tribes Ascend were both class based, it's just that people have short memories(especially knee-jerk 12 yearolds that watch Dunkeys videos as if they were informative and not entertainment, I like Dunkey but his video on Paladins was just...bad.)

Yeah, it's almost impossible to come up with an idea and not be critiqued for it already existing. I think what matters most is the execution of a game, rather than the mechanics that may be simillar to another game. So you can't make a first person shooter because there's COD out there. You can't make an open world car driving game because there's GTA out there. You can't make an mmorpg because there's LoL. You can't make anything because it has been done before. There are games which stand out, although clearly not being innovative and original, but because of the effort and execution they have, their popularity exploded and people didn't care they were "ripping off" games made in the past, such case being Undertale, a turn based rpg, and FnaF, a simplistic horror game involving jumpscares.

I've played both games and I prefer the graphics in Overwatch better than in Paladins, but I think the reason why I prefer Paladins more is because it's a faster pace game and it involves more strategy with the card system. I used to play Paladins on and off for a while but I'm thinking of just diving in this time. Overwatch has just been getting boring. It's been the same game since it came out with the same heroes being on the top except maybe 1 or 2 swapping spots. Not to mention the awful release schedule for characters that just end up being released underpowered or nerfed immediately due to reddit complaints (Doomfist). Paladins constantly changes up their meta with new releases and balance changes. Whenever I come back from a hiatus it's like a fresh new game.
