I recall hearing that the highest break in an official match was 148. It was a total clearance starting with a free ball, but not potting black every time. Your guess of 155 is technically possible, but to my knowledge was never achieved in an official match.

You're right - Jamie Burnett in the 2004 UK Championship. Jamie Cope made a 155 in practice, but there's a reason why we don't count practice matches in official stats...

Hi There, I have a question I would like your opinion on. Cueing backspin I wonder about how low I need to go to maximise spin. I do realize that the lower you go seems to be the preferred method. I like to look at this question in a slightly different angle. If for instance you are spinning a bicycle wheel using your finger close to the center axis a shorter revolution at the axis point translates to more revolution on the outside of the wheel. So with that in mind does it not also mean that if you push through a cueball even a half tip under the center it should create enough revolutions on the outside of the white to create a decent back spin? I do believe in this ideology as long as the cue action is of a certain tempo along with going sufficiently through the cue ball with an authorative stroke. Highest break in snooker is 155 and it has been done on TV. However, it can only be do if the opponent misses the reds on break and leaves a free ball.

you know a 147 is actually not the max break. if you get a free ball before any reds have been potted then a 155 is possible (obviously it's unlikely but it's possible, e.g. if they miss the break and snooker you behind the baulk colours). edit: I just realized someone commented the same thing as me. you should try this break in a video by the way.
