Generally if a player wins the world championship basically win be in the number one spot even if that's all they do win, as long as they do well in all the other venues like last 16 or better.

It's a ranking that simply shows how much earned, so it also includes Masters , coc and more.

So if O'Sullivan hadn't started racking up points/pounds much later in November 2021, he would be world champion but not the worlds number one in the ranking. However, had he not started earning at the back end of last year, he may well not have won the world championship, and the points he did achieve would have gone to another player. So if he had repeated a former achievement by winning the world championship without competing in any events for that season, his score would have been 500,000, without becoming the world number one in the rankings. A great presentation BTW.

I don’t understand snooker, so is the ranking based on how much money you earn or is it on points? So is snooker a money driven sport? So Ronnie won the championship he gets 500,000 prize money. What about the points?

The money translates to points in the rankings. Then after the same tournament 2 years later the points drop off. In Ronnie's case if he hadn't won the final of the World Championship this year his ranking points would've gone down by 300,000 (His 500,000 for winning in 2020 would've dropped off & he would've only made 200,000 runners up prize, so a net loss of 300,000). Luckily he won, so he made back the 500,000 ranking points and stays no1.

You get £20,000 for a first round defeat in the World Championships, and a lesser amount in a few other events, but none in the smaller events.

Such a low earning sport sadly. When you look at what tennis players earn for winning tournaments, snooker fares poorly. The time and dedication it takes to win the world championship and it’s only £500,000 ?!! Crazy. And bloody footballers get how much a week?! 🤣 And golfers too. Considering how hard snooker is and how much practice and hard work it takes the money is shite.

Got no chance of that. Snooker has its limitations, as do some other sports which simply cant generate the same revenue.
