I take it as metaphorical. A culture that demonizes minority groups and one of the ways to achieve his level of success was to accept that label and exploit it. Kind of a "fuck you. I'll make it work for me." angle. But maybe perpetuating the idea of people with his complexion being dangerous felt like he was selling his soul for profit or something.
