This is truly a piece I've been trying to nail almost since I started playing guitar in 2006. Not wildly difficult to play, but deceptively tricky to play well. At the beginning and end of the video are snippets of me as a 16 year old trying to play it on the Ibanez PF-512 guitar I had at the time. I now attempt it on my 1969 Martin D-12-35. Hopefully the attempt is worthy of the instrument. Apologies to Cory Wong for copping his style.
Also, as a side note, sirens: a hallmark of my recordings since 2008.
Patreon Patrons get to see my 16-year-old self rush the hell out of this piece, bad technique and all.

After a long day at school, I got to leave earlier than I usually do on Tuesday evenings since I finished my chem lab early. Walking down the subway station and waiting to get on the A, I noticed someone who I immediately likened to Josh across the tracks. I wasn't sure if it was him but he had the same hair, glasses, and seemed to really enjoy whatever music he was listening to. I didn't want to miss my chance of meeting him if it really was him, so I went to the other side of the tracks hoping that he didn't get on a train yet. I don't know why I noticed this right away lol but he had those "guitarist fingernails," so I was almost 100% sure it was him. When I asked if he was a guitarist he said he was so I asked if he was Josh Turner and it was in fact him! I had no idea he lives in NYC so that's why I hesitated to see if it was him. I wish I told him more than just "I really like the cover of Rocky Raccoon you did" (with Reina, Carson, and Tori) but, besides that, meeting him out of the blue turned my ordinary Tuesday into one that I'll never forget. I started to learn how to play guitar last year because of his videos, so it was an incredible moment to unexpectedly meet someone that I look up to so much. Thank you for sharing these songs and covers with us, Josh!

At first when Josh heard the sirens and smiled I thought "oh just a smug from a clasically trained nerdy musician that is annoyed that he has to re-record cause someone is interfering with his playing". But then when I saw the ending I understood that Josh was just realising that it's one of those moments that music and fate give you. Pretty cool.

I once heckled Leo Kotke off the stage in Kalamazoo Michigan, about, 1998, the largely college crowd was on my side, he walked off, I left so he could come back and do his show. No one in the crowd ever did anything other than laugh with me. He did his thing, and broke into a jam that got the crowd going, then he backed off, that was the hinge point. He is a little too left brain for me, though I respect his efforts tremendously, each crowd is diff. Great stuff, you are always good.
