I wouldn’t recommend for anybody to use those masks. As someone who has done a LOT of free-diving and snorkeling, I will tell you that you want to be regularly spitting your mouthpiece out of your mouth so you can breathe completely fresh snorkel-less air. With these full-face masks, that is not an option. Additionally, you are breathing in a much larger volume of recycled air with the full-face masks than you are with a standard snorkel. All of the aforementioned results in ever-increasing levels of CO2 (carbon dioxide) in your system, and diminished levels of O2 (oxygen). Also, the snorkels on these masks are “dry”, meaning they seal when you submerge to keep water out. They can seal at inopportune times and can also jam shut because of sand, which can lead to panic. Rather than merely spitting your mouthpiece out, you have to remove the entire apparatus which can be difficult, or even counter-intuitive, in a state of panic. A state of panic will result in a RAPID increase of CO2, decrease of O2, and lead to feelings of suffocation, or even ACTUAL suffocation. Dry snorkels can also “jam open” and let in an influx of water you’re not prepared for. Not only are full-face masks worse than standard masks/snorkels in panicky situations, they are more conducive to panicky situations. There have been numerous deaths over the years linked up to these types of masks; I do not recommend for anybody to use them. Should they be BANNED? That seems excessive to me, but I do think they should come with some sort of warning.

Finally tore the thing off my face and floated on my back until I felt I could breathe again and think straight. Slowly made our way back to shore. I live on a Big Island, Hawaii and consider myself as a strong swimmer. Full face mask definitely is a culprit here. When I got mine, there was a warning attached - it’s designed for a slow snorkeling and can’t be used while swimming or making any excessive effort while being in water. Had my share of experience with that. The mask really starts suffocating you very fast and your heart rate goes up, CO2 rises, panic kicks in… ocean is unpredictable and when it’s stormy there, this kind of mask quickly becomes your worst enemy.

Please people use a Snorkeling vest if you go out snorkeling. You can buy one online for around $25.00. The way they work is if you panic, you can blow air into the vest with a few breaths to create a flotation vest.
@M_SCАй бұрын
I used a pool noodle. Surprisingly effective.
@GreggsonWongАй бұрын
Flotation vest (blow-up) would only work for people who are not panicking. The pool noodle is a better idea. But, if you have to rely on any type of flotation device. Then, you have no business being in open water to begin with. Stay on the beach.
@JeronicoGoldmeyerАй бұрын
@@GreggsonWong , Try snorkeling with a noodle, it doesn't work, or creates the crappiest Snorkeling experience ever. I have led snorkeling adventures with newbies, and they love the vest. When people panic it's a progressive thing that goes from bad to worse. If people start to panic they at least can float and blow into the vest inflating it. If their panic response is so bad that they can't float, then they probably shouldn't be snorkeling in the first place.

Most snorkel masks fog up because they get salt water inside of them or people try to clean them out with salt water. I use a defogger spray or a Johnson & Johnson shampoo and water mixture that prevents fogging. Also, my full face snorkel mask does allow me to blow out any salt water that might get trapped inside, though it very rarely happens. sometimes I snorkel for hours and have never had an issue. But, I have heard a lot of cheap full face snorkel Masks have CO2 problems that do cause people to become disoriented and eventually drown.

She is saying she can’t swim because of the arm so they throw her a noodle that she can’t hold on to as she climbs down the ladder and another passenger jumped in to get her. Another guy was stung by a jelly fish and that was enough for me to say no thanks ! The ocean isn’t a joke. There are dangers. And even as a non pregnant young lady I wasn’t getting in that water that day. Freak things can happen anywhere , and even getting in a car is dangerous and can lead to a fatality. But no I wouldn’t have gone flying or snorkeling at 30 weeks esp with another one at home. I don’t understand this baby moon thing ? Politicians in Hawaii need to step up and ban these full face masks. Also, most locals do not snorkel in this area...Maui is not Disneyland

And neither should inexperienced dreamers think that our ocean is going to fulfill their wishes, when they have no experience snorkeling in it. Who decided to put that mask on? The mask or the person?

I don’t know that they should be outright banned, but they should definitely come with a warning. I personally would never use one, or even a “dry snorkel” for that matter (prone to jamming and inopportune closing); but multitudes of people have used the full face masks without incident. There are certain benefits to the full-face masks, and certain people with mouth/jaw issues can ONLY use these types of snorkels. I would rather warn people and let them make their own decision.

The state should ban these full face mask, they are dangerous. Regular snorkels can be spit out and allow you to go up for air, these face huggers are restricting when you’re panicking and try to gasp for air.
@charly3575Ай бұрын
No, that would presuppose that most everyone using them would die. This family’s decision to go snorkeling without experience is responsible, not the mask.

Tragic. Sorry to hear this. Praying for those left behind to recover & find peace through their faith. Certified SCUBA diver here. There is false sense of security that somehow comes from folks using snorkeling equipment thinking it's safer & no need to have either a swim buddy or snorkel near others who are also snorkeling in the ocean. Always stay near others. RIP tide? Maybe. But remember a person who is drowning will "latch on" to anyone nearby with incredible force. Therefore the "rescuer" is unsuspecting of this death-grip of a panicking, drowning person and then they both drown. One must view the drowning person, and then go deeper underneath and from BEHIND that person and grasp them under the arms from behind and swim a sidestroke and never let that person TURN toward you as they will grasp you & you both may drown. If you must approach them from the front, then, at the last minute, dive under the water and come up behind them. This step is vital because someone who is struggling in the water will attempt to climb up on top of you to try to get out of the water. In doing so, they will likely drown you. Take a YMCA or swimmer's course on how to rescue someone in open water. Gotta have your wits about you - to think and react quickly when something dangerous or difficult happens unexpectedly - IF you're diving or snorkeling anywhere. Period.

I have 4 or 5 of those masks, and sometimes they can play against you. If something blocks the airway a little or if you tilt your head back a little you can’t breath. It covers the airway fast, and once it’s blocked you can’t unblock it until you exhale. I almost died with one of those masks and I have plenty of practice with them. I am so sorry for the loss. Poor baby has no parents and no sister now.
