I can't believe I never thought of something like this... I've been thinking about a temporary track belt type system that you could put on a vehicle once it's stuck to help get out that would be simple to install and store, but this is MUCH simpler. I'll have to try this. I'll have to remember to give you credit as well since my friends know I come up with effective yet off the wall fixes for automotive problems and they might mistake me for smart enough to come up with something like this.

nice video. I would modify this slightly. use individual ropes after passing through the rim, tie the knot and cut it off. use a short rope through each part of rim, tied off individually. then use a rope on the side to cinch the individual ropes TIGHT. the advantages of this way: 1. if one rope breaks, you dont lose the whole thing! 2. you dont have a long rope that could tangle up in things
@WildPhotoShooter8 жыл бұрын

I agree - terrific idea. I wonder if you just knotted the rope after every pass thru the wheel you could still use the single long rope. The knotting isolates each section to prevent losing the entire rope if it beaks at any point but you’ve saved the time of cutting it up. Might try this to see.

Best snow rope video on the internet by a very long way. The only thing I would add is to tie a uni knot on one end .. a self tightening loop used for fishing .. but really easy to loosen. Tighten the eye on the other end of the rope after tension, that will hold everything (cold fingers) why you put on a rope lock, a little figure of 8 device to lock off the excess and hold everything fast. Just google trapeze rope lock. No need to spend £100. Do what this gentleman suggests. And ... if it breaks, it won't rip off your body work.
@capnthepeafarmer11 жыл бұрын
just tried this, I did more of a over under and loop on each "tread". It makes it so you don't have to thread it through all the rungs after you're done and makes it way tighter. Thanks for the great idea!
@rockinjuliescott10 жыл бұрын
I have used this. Here is the big deal. Use them to get unstuck, then take them right off! I had to have the rope dug out of my brakes because I left them on to get on up my hill. It cost $15 from my mechanic and didn't do any damage to my brake calipers, but be aware those calipers go around the tire on the back side and if your rope isn't tight, it WILL catch on the brakes and go in. I would do it again to get unstuck. I would make sure to take them right off. I did not go to the great extents this guy did to make sure they were tight. I just tied each length around the tire and did it in 3 places. Worked great!!
@stephenlam836610 жыл бұрын

Great idea in instances of EMERGENCY to get your self unstuck or get yourself to the paved or cleared road. He clearly notes with on screen verbiage at 3:16 "As with chains snow rope must be removed when driving on snow free roads." If your worried about the rope breaking and becoming unwrapped and entangled in another mechanical part.. just make each section of rope shorter and not continuous( make 3 or 4 sections ) . Also I'd remove the plastic hub cap , nylon rope will scratch em up

Great video/tutorial. I never knew this was an option until now.
@lineartechbd160011 жыл бұрын
Problem with this is, if the rope breaks anywhere , the whole thing will unravel and get caught in your brakes or axles and could possibly rip parts off. Other issues is if you drive on any paved road the friction could cut through the rope. Still, it is a good idea if you are in all snow and ice and you had to get out of an area. . I don't this will work on cars with big rotors and calipers that are close to the inside of the rim.
@marielynn52345 жыл бұрын
I don't think this is meant for distance driving. Generally, one can drive slowly in snow on level ground, but having to drive up a hill, this rope comes in handy. For instance, when it snows here, we can usually make it to our neighborhood, but not home, because it's just hills the rest of the way. So instead of walking up hills in the snow with an asthmatic child, (which I actually have had to do), I'd DEFINITELY opt to use this rope method instead.

On compacted snow the ropes show hardly any signs of wear, but (as with chains) as soon as you drive on tarmac or chippings they deteriorate rapidly, so the length of time they last depends more on where you drive rather than how far you drive. It's best to change the ropes when they show signs of fraying rather than have them break and become entangled.....and yes, I have often seen those puzzled faces!!
@iHateAdobeFlash12 жыл бұрын
@Tom Joyce: Great video! Thanks for the knowledge! Only thing is, the spacing looks a bit too spread out. Have you tried threading the rope twice through each hole to half the spacing? Front-wheel Drive Front-wheel drive (FWD) is a form of engine and transmission layout used in motor vehicles, where the engine drives the front wheels only. Most modern front-wheel-drive vehicles feature a transverse engine, rather than the conventional longitudinal engine arrangement generally found in rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel drive vehicles.

@wallysvideos4533 жыл бұрын
I tried that, and found that on my drive wheels there is not enough clearance between the rims and the brake calipers of the car for the rope to fit. My wheels are steel rims and the holes in the rims are not far enough out towards the tire for the rope to get enough clearance to pass by the calipers. If the rims were aluminum then it would have worked. So I use folding metal traction aids/mats from Canadian Tire instead, and they work so much better and are so much easier to use than simple rope. I made a video on my channel showing how I get unstuck by using them.
