Today's farm vlog has me testing a "hack" that was suggested by one of my viewers ....although I have found a dedicate product made for this exact thing...I thought we'd take a set of standard zip ties and see if they would work to get you unstuck from ice and snow in a pinch....check it out...you might be surprised!!

You are right. The tires do need to be facing the right way. Easy fix. Swap the wheels. Left to right and right to left. However. It won't help. The point of the video was to determine if the zip tie trick works. But I have to ask. Why wasn't aggressive knobby tires put on? There would be no need for zip-ties. Any tire you put on it will dry-rot before the tread is worn out. Money was wasted on the tires he had on that light weight, lack of a better term, buggy.

@@StoneyRidgeFarmer I study a lot of history... mostly wwii history. A lot of the time, if a jeep or troop truck got stuck in snow or mud, soldiers would take some branches and put them against the tires for traction. Please note however, this was when they didn’t have someone to tow them out. And it didn’t always work. If the mud or snow was too deep, then this technique didn’t work.

The reason that the tire with out the zip tie is spinning and the tire with isn’t, is becuase when you don’t have your locker Engadged it is an open differential and there for the tire with the least amount of load on it. Or in your case (the least amount of traction) is going to want to spin

What would happen of you cut off sections of drip hose on the zip tie? Also what if you simply wrapped a durable rope around and around the tires the snugged it down eith a couple buggies? Looping and pre melting the ends out of the wind?

Have seen people drink bottles with a straw, it’s bent over the neck of bottle to let air in. You could do that with a bit of hosepipe.

I was about to comment about those tires being backwards, but I see that you commented on that :D Tread has to push water out, so always place the pointy part going forward.

I always have bungee cords and ratchet straps on my vehicle to tie stuff down, I bet those would work in a pinch. Zip ties are awesome and I use small ones all the time for electric wires. I didn't know about these big ones. I will have to look for those.

Nice hack! The other thing they did away with on gas cans was the breather hole...that made all the diff in the world. Some people actually drilled their own.

8:11 Exactly, I got in my car in northern Spain a set of Michelin CrossClimate tyres and their pattern is very similar. They are just all weather, not full winter tyres but perform spectaculary well on snow and ice, so I was wondering why yours (although have another brand) are so bad. Of course, they are wrongly installed, you could get a different performance if they were well installed.

The zip grip, the problem is that the zip’s are too far apart, it will spin then grip over and over till they break off, with regular zip ties if you put them close together so the tire contacting the road has two or three at all times touching the tire won’t spin and break off all the zips.

if anybody goes the ezpour route try it without the vent first. you may not need it. works fine for the smaller tanks but i don't know how fast it will come out. and thanks for another cool video.

Man...without the vent...they are horrible...I messed up and didn't put the vent in my diesel cans for the tractor...what a pain!

@@StoneyRidgeFarmer i kinda figured that. if i ever have to replace my 2 1/2 gallon can i doubt i can get away with it. you may be too young to remember the old soda and beer cans before the pull tops came out when you poked the hole with the can opener than poked the little vent hole on the other side. lol

Got stuck in a snow covered field could go backward but not forward. Thankfully there were slots in my wheels & some room. So I took an old water hose cut it up and tied several pieces to each rear tire. Drove right out & after a few miles on the asphalt they self removed themselves.

if you put the tires on the opposite sides they look like they would be going in the right direction anyhow just buy looking at them if you swapped sides with them then they would be going in the right direction please correct me if I am wrong

On zip ties... So many says they don't work. It snows a lot in Indiana. Guy bought a 500 pack in late 80's. Said well over half still unused. Working guy, drives to work every day with them when snowy.

Very informative...another way just to get you out when your drive tires are stuck in snow is use your rubber floor mat. Stick it under your drive tires and you will move....

Pretty impressive for using just 1 knuckle of the zip tie @long the center of tires, but if you tie wrapped 2 knuckles @long the width of the tires @ the same interval around the tire should theoretically increase your push-per-area

had a tension pulley go out on highway. I put a wrench on it to tighten the belt then zip tied the other end of the wrench to the A/C line & drove 60 miles home.
