It may have been that you pushed the plunger too quickly. Most french presses need to be pushed slowly to filter the grounds properly. Also you mentioned that you stirred it during the 5min steep. Did you place and remove the top multiple times? That will definitely get you grounds. I just received mine today and tried it out. Made a perfect cup. I filled it so the water is just above the 0.5 stamp (text and all). That is exactly 18oz of water. I always brew one scoop per 6oz of water, so 3 scoops was the perfect amount. Key is to give it one stir, place the top on it, and just let the beans soak. 5min should give you a perfect cup. I don't like how the cup markings aren't actual measured cups. However they do correspond to the graduations on my Mr. Coffee drip coffee maker. I don't know why coffee "cups" aren't just standard measured cups. My only other complaint is that the bottom on mine isn't perfectly flat, which causes it to wobble a bit. Other than that it's a pretty simple and decent coffee press.

I appreciate your insight. This has been one of the most polarizing pieces of kit I've encountered across the board, people either adore it or hate it. I really feel like I did a bad - or fatally unthorough - review here and I'm not a big fan of this video. It's been a good learning opportunity and I keep it up as a reminder to do better.

I'm sorry to say that it's been traded off for other gear that I'm using. I honestly wish that I'd spent more time experimenting with it, I feel like my issues were largely methodological.

@@SamwiseOutdoors French presses are a little tricky its not something to be rushed, i learned that years ago with my first French press made by GSI, i noticed when i took my time and didn't rush i always got a nice clean gourmet cup of coffee but in a rush it turned out a grind ridden mess.
