-Welcome to the Sleep Ranch! We are located in the Northern Black Hills on the South Dakota/ Wyoming border where our ancestors settled and started ranching in 1883.
I (Carson) work alongside my parents, Jeff and Jodi, our ranch hand, Jaques, my wife, Damaris who also works as a nurse in town, and our son Silas! We have friends and family who come along very frequently as well!
We run a cow/calf operation where we summer our cattle on the Black Hills National Forest and winter them in the foothills of the Black Hills. We also have a backgrounding feedlot, and grow alfalfa and grass hay.

After you get the uterus pushed back in will that cow be able to calve again? That sounds pretty serious. I was just wondering. Or will you have to sell that cow?

Once they prolapse once, they likely will repeat. So anything that prolapses gets sold. Some pre-birthing prolapses can be more calcium or number of offspring related (animals that can have multiples, sometimes they run out of space, so things start pushing out when the animal lies down), so some people won't always sell off the animal, but a full prolapse is pretty serious and technically shouldn't be able to happen.

What a farmer once told me is that up to a certain point cows can control their calving taking the weather conditions into consideration. If they sense the weather conditions are not going to be ideal they can hold on for another day to week. At least cows that live outside. Is that something you would agree to?

It would be a lot easier and our goal is to move to that. Right now we have to be on our forest service grazing permits June 1st so that’d be right in the middle of when we want to calve. We’d have to get rid of our permits to do that which isn’t out of the question
