Wintertime life on the ranch has not changed much. Starting cold equipment, feeding livestock, breaking the ice, and dealing with dead animals. We had a washout on the side of a hill (the boneyard) where dead critters were hauled off, too, and wildlife would feast on them.

That cold weather is brutal. Our ranchers and farmers still have to work in those temps while others are nice and warm in their cozy houses.

I grew up in eastern South Dakota on a small farm. I know how difficult it is to keep a few animals happy and healthy up there in those temperatures let alone all a herd of cattle. I live in Tennessee now and it's cold enough here while taking care of my horses. I sure do miss my home state. Im a new sub and love your channel.

Carson,I had a ranch in Montana till I retired.I always put a piece of rock salt on the creek.And I didn't have to beat myself up breaking ice. Just a thought.. Didn't keep it all unfroze but made the job a little easier.Happy New Year.Take good care of those little ones.This is a good life for them.🌎

It's hard to guess when to cull a cow. Some cows are still going strong at 12 while others are old at 10. So, you take a guess in the fall and hope they don't go downhill during the winter.

Carson, I have been through this situation before. With that poor cow so close to calving, I think I would have done a C section first to see if I could have saved the calf. The poor cow was at the end but if she could have given her calf a chance to live, what more could she have given. This is all hind site of course which is always 100% perfect. I was gonna say, get off that ice while you’re cutting a hole in it but six inches thick!? Wow! It was evident the downed cow had given up. She didn’t even try to move. I had a friend who raised cows and when he would lose one or have to put one down he’d kneel beside her and thank God for the contributions she made to their living. I wonder what made me think of Pat. He was a good friend. I hope you and your family are well. Thanks for the great video and your hard work to provide good beef for us.

The only good thing about cold is that you don't have to deal with mud. It is funny, you refer to that feed as cake, in my area we call them cubes, and the feed is actually in cylindrical form.

Question ? Why do you need to feed the cows " cake " ?? Ive wintered cattle out in the open ( with wind protection )for over 40 years. . Im here in Northeastern Iowa. Its cold ! Ive never had an issue with skinny cattle yet ! You cant bale better quality hay for the cows ? Ive switched to baleage hay three years ago. Cattle love it and eat everything !

Sorry to hear about the cow, but as you said it’s the circle of life and one of those challenges that you have to deal with, whether it’s in the depths of summer or winter or in between. Best way to get a cow up, use a halter and pull head across body toward back legs. One person pulls on halter and 2 to 4 push on shouler and rump. More on front as 60% of body weight is in the front half of the body. Did she have a large "bottle" shaped mass below her jaw and diarrhea? If yes, likely Johnes.

It's impossible to save the calf unfortunately, if it was a couple days from calving maybe but it is not totally developed yet. I know it sounds cruel but that is nature and the sadness of having animals
