Greetings, I was a bike courier for 7.5 years in Calgary, born in Edmonton. Once part of the brotherhood/sisterhood, lifelong friendships form. I retired from biking Jan. 2005, got MS May 2012, in a wheelchair with memories now. Thank you for making this film, bike couriers of past and present in Calgary salute you. Some of the toughest S.O.B's around.

I was a bike courier in Vancouver for 8 years. From 18 to 26 years old. I am now 50 years old. People would tell me I needed to get a better job. I Knew it was true. For financial stability and to build a financially stable future. But maybe I did it because I just love to ride my bike. Of course that was the reason. But what I've built over the years far exceeds any amount of financial stability. I now realize at 50 that I am healthier than anyone I know. I still ride alot, and I believe that riding young and working hard prepared my body and mind for the aging process. You may not see it now as a young bike messenger, but stick with the riding even after you retire and you will reap the benefits of being healthy. Without realizing it I was building a foundation against disease and other health related issues that come with living a sedintary lifestyle. I take 0 meds and can out ride guys half my age. I'd rather have that than a fat bank account. These winters, and the job in general will make you a beast.

I am a 58 yrs old deaf man and I have been riding my mountain bike with the road tires for many years altogether as my main transportation before I bought myself a small cargo van few years ago . I plan on riding my mountain bike once again someday. I have the great respect for all cyclists and snow cyclists. 😎 Thanks for sharing that with us.

This upcoming winter will be my 5th rodeo, it is dangerous and there's a lot of money to be made out there. Right now I am looking for a trackocross type fixed gear with some good o' knobby tires, 700c by 35 or up for the snow! My biggest fear is slipping, whether it is rain, snow, or even ice! I always take my time, because safety is more important than food or paper. It will get there when it get there.

A roadie since the ‘70s and occasional bike mechanic, I would commute by bike as much as possible. Co-workers half my age could not understand such a thing as dressing for the weather. They were on sponsored teams but no riding in the rain or after dark. To me that below zero F ride was an honor. Three kinds or riders : professional racers - small percentage; recreational - many ; and utility riders whether courier, pedicabbie in Hanoi, or commuter - must be more and a responsible world around us. I despise those who drive blithely. Stay well.

You ride a fix in the snow... You realize you are a goddess? I did a stint for Mobil Messenger, NYC, 1978 and to this day it is the most exciting, rewarding gig ever, (and I've been paid to ski and light rock concerts too), traffic jamming was still the best. I hope you are still healthy and rockin' it!

Respect! I dont mind riding in the rain or when conditions worsen. Storms can be fun/challenging. I’ve ridden thru hail, cold weather and also in winter. Mind you it’s usually in the spring thaw. There might still be snow on the ground but not near the conditions in this video. I’m on the west coast of Canada so the winters here are pretty mild compared to the rest of Canada. This is a true snow warrior. You have my respect ✊🏾.

Amazing rabbithole the youtube algorithm can take you on. I started swimming this summer after a 10 year hiatus and this week I thought that maybe I could do a triathalon one day. Learned how to bike literally two days ago in my 20s and now I'm here. Love the video, as a New Yorker it took me back to a different time when the winters were new to me and the snow was deep. I must say, that I hate the colder months but I guess I'm starting to learn to appreciate the change in the seasons. I'd love for it to be summer all year but perhaps it wouldn't be summer without the winter. Big kudos to these folks, they look real cool not gonna lie, reminds me of that one video game The Division. I've been pondering if I should to pull the trigger on my first road bike... kinda scared of what might happen if I do. Unsure if I can ride in those cold temperatures as well, NYC streets and drivers are also not very friendly to cyclists.

Love winter cycling, probably the activity I love the most. But doing this in Edmonton must be quite insane, not sure I'd do it. And not because of the weather, quite the opposite actually, but because of the fact Edmonton must be at least 20 years behind Montreal in terms of infrastructure and mentality. I've been biking yearlong for about 10 years in MTL and things are so much better now both in terms of the infrastructure and driver's mentality. We're not seen as weirdos and nuisance as much as before.

My best advice for anyone riding on the road in the snow and ice... Get yourself some studded tires. No, they are not illegal, at least where I live. In most jurisdictions, studded tire rules only apply to motor vehicles. Check your local legislation. Also, avoid locking up your wheels on dry asphalt, it can tear the studs out of the tire.
@lihtan

It would be good to invest in a pack of spare studs and an insertion tool as well!

Nice bike, I ride a Dolan (Terry Dolan). I started with Terry's first bike called the Cougar now I'm riding a Dolan Rebus road bike. Great bikes, Great bike builder, enuf said! I was never a bike courier but in T.O. I rode with my club members in minus 10, 12 Celsius. I'm older now and couldn't image doing that now, I stop riding at around minus 2 depending on the wind and precipitation. It was fun, people thought we were crazy, yeah I guess we were.
