Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is the very first full length animated movie 🎥 and Disney’s first full length animated movie 🎥.

18:27 Around 1940 Caselotti sued Disney because they used her voice on records and she wasn't given any share of the profits. Disney's lawyer proved to the judge that every time she signed her paycheck she signed away the rights to her performance.

Shortly after the movie's release, Caselotti was asked to appear on The Jack Benny Program, which was hosted by one of the biggest names in entertainment at the time. However, Disney informed both Benny and Cselotti, "I'm sorry, but that voice can't be used anywhere. I don't want to spoil the illusion of Snow White." Yes, animation historian Keith Scott said Disney's ostensible reason for not crediting voice actors was because it would "spoil the illusion". However, Scott said the real reason most animation studios rarely credited voice actors was because they would ask for more money. And honestly, if you're crediting designers and animators, are you not already "spoiling the illusion"?

There’s a level of maturity in Snow White’s animation and staging that makes it still the greatest of all the films Disney made. I know he made sure that the film would appeal to adults but it’s amazing that this film is from the same studio that made Zootopia. The Queen is one of the most important characters in movie history and an early femme fatale. Not sure about her Witch form but I heard her Queen animation was not rotoscoped. You can just tell by looking at her face. It’s just the first time that kind of realism was tried on a human character. Just all around perfection.

Very well said! I wish more Disney animations tried to have a broader range across the ages of its audience. (Though I did enjoy Zootopia.) I don't have exact knowledge (and I could be wrong) but I've read a lot of animators from the time and I repeatedly read that only the dwarfs weren't rotoscoped. I have no information who may or may not have been the actress rotoscoped for the Queen. So you could be right. Just wanted to toss in my two cents. Thank you for watching and commenting!

Did some more research. The Queen wasn’t rotoscoped at all & it was said you could wallpaper a room with the drawings on her face alone. Also all her animation was done by Babbit with the exception of the staircase scene. Truly the first great animated film character. Couldn’t find the same on her witch form but it be that some of the wide shots were rotoscoped. You can see roughness with her body in the apple cottage scene so probably not very much.

Great video. Walt definitely produced animation was better than anything else at the time including his own shorts.

I gotta say, I agree with again. Dopey and Grumpy were always my favorites too. I think Disney animations should have taken a lesson about Grumpy, especially over the past few decades, that it's okay to have a gruff character as long as it's handled well. I think they've become scared of audience reactions in many ways rather than innovative. And I just noticed I used the word innovative in regards to a character that's 86 years old. Anyway, you get what I'm saying. Thanks for watching again!

Your channel deserves so much more love from the KZbin algorithm than what it's getting. But the story of Snow White is pretty well known. I love the focus on characters and people that are not as well known. But that's just me... Please keep up the good work.

This was actually my first episode so I ran with an idea that I knew wasn't going to get a ton of attention. I figured Snow White was Disney's first film so I'd make it the subject of my first video. I used this episode to relearn how to edit video as well as try out my voice and writing skill. But hey, thanks so much for watching! I have a list of people for upcoming episodes in the future that are not so well known. I just want to build a larger audience before diving back into those episodes so they get the attention they deserve.

Did Snow White begin production in 1934 or 1935?
@disfarers
@disfarers Жыл бұрын
I had to go back to my notes from making this episode but I believe it began in 1935. My guess would be in May after the release of The Cookie Carnival, seeing as how Grim Natwick animated the woman in that Silly Symphony and subsequently was the lead animator on the Snow White character.

I thought 💭 production stared in 1934 that’s when Walt announces they will create the first ever full length animated feature.

After looking into it you're right. The Goddess of Spring (Silly Symphony) was released in Nov of '34 and that was a test run to see if they could animate a female figure. They likely were already writing the script, doing preproduction work and early design in 1934. Nice catch!

It disgusts me to think how Walt nearly drove himself to ruin to create something new, and now Disney shoves their CGI "Snow White" into theaters just because it's familiar and an easy moneymaker, and nobody needs to waste time being creative. Thank God Walt isn't around to see that.
