Sorry to be a pain in the ass, but the scene of Pinocchio inside Stromboli's cage was animated by Frank Thomas, not Ollie Johnston.
@disfarers
@disfarers 11 күн бұрын
You're not being a pain in the slightest. If I make a mistake, I want to hear about it. In this case, you're right again, it was a Frank Thomas scene. However, in doing my research I read that Ollie helped Frank with this one. To what extent, I'm uncertain. I suppose the source could have been wrong, but it's such an amazing animation that I wanted to run with showing it. And in looking at it in hindsight, I should have absolutely explained that. This was my first huge episode, so I admit that I made a number of mistakes and didn't zero in and polish everything as I should have. But thanks again, Dan! I love hearing your input and expertise! And just an fyi, because of our last conversation I already added a line about you in an upcoming Milt Kahl episode.

My memory is a bit fuzzy on the original ride but I enjoy Frozen re work. Once again great video. Can I request you do more extinct attractions? Captain Eo perhaps ?
@disfarers
@disfarers 15 күн бұрын
You blew my mind with your Captain Eo idea! That's fantastic! I will absolutely put that on my list. It's going to take me some time to get to it, but wow, I had never thought of that. I could tie in George Lucas and Disney in there too. I like Frozen Ever After a lot too. It's a solid attraction. And I do plan on making more extinct attraction episodes but I really have to space them out. The editing for extinct attractions is really tough because I'm relying on what's out there that already exists, whereas in my typical episodes I can just go out and shoot exactly what I want. I hope I'm making sense boiling it down like that, but a 30 minute episode like Maelstrom took over triple the time to make that a typical 30 minute episode. So for production reasons, I have to space them out. Again though, thanks so much for the Eo idea! And thanks so much for watching and commenting!

Mind blowing ride. Personally have loved all the versions. The car turn and ride backwards was so soothing on the way down, Tomorrows child will sing in your head forever and those infinity mirrors with the shape projections were so cool. Never was a fan of any of the after show due to just too many people shoving and pushing. Absolutely loved the Mike Wasowski projections after Illuminations show telling everyone to get out and go home. I have to add that Epcot was always an entertainment educational museum, and this sets the tone for the whole park. The more others things change from this format the odder the original rides feel. Lot of the exhibits and rides have gone away from this format and it saddens me, as Disney could have made another park, instead of slowly ruining this unique format which is really found nowhere else. I personally like original Epcot way more than what is presented today.

Been on Maelstrom about 10 times over the years and someone falling off would have been impossible unless they tried to jump out. Even though this was a cluster of ideas, it felt informative and educational through entertainment, and thats what was expected from Epcot, like a super fun learning museum. You felt like you had learned about Norway. Short for the wait, it was always cooler than anywhere else in the park and great ride!

Do you happen to have a link about Kjell and the mural tidbit? He's a fantastic artist, but I can't find anything linking him to Maelstrom. @@disfarers i cheated and asked chatGPT. It didn't link a source, and i also tried to dig where it may have came from to no avail. I was able to comb through some of his artwork though which did seem to be in line with the style of the mural, more or less. And ive seen a zillion maelstrom videos, but this one was captivating. The history about the shortening of the ride and the incorporation was so enlightening. I do think maybe chatgpt was off wit this one, cause i cannot find a single thing beyond that answer. And, as i dig further, he seems to really be more in line with drawing the trolls/gnomes side of norwegian folklore rather than the scene in the mural. The mystery continues!

@disfarers
@disfarers Ай бұрын
There's a lot of logic in what you said. Walt lost his team of animators that he cultivated during the creation of the Oswald episodes. So when he started over with Mickey, the only animator from the Oswald days was Ub Iwerks. So since they were starting over with a new staff, the quality of the animation unfortunately diminished. If only for a temporary number of years.

I asked for soda water, the server ended up bringing me a giganto bottle of Perrier at like 8-10 bucks when I was expecting... not that. She also seemed to laugh at me for getting one of the mocktail/sippers and wanting the spaceship cup. Didn't even try to upsell me there. Just was something that really soured the experience, especially after paying for two adult prefixes.

Oh wow, that's crazy! I'm sorry to hear about that experience. On the visit to shoot video for this episode, our server was the exact opposite of what you experienced. We even went on the app to specially thank him and say great things because he was so remarkable. I've had experiences like yours though, just not at Space 220. It's always so disappointing. The Perrier mix up just really makes me think that you got a poor server, but a terrible seat as well is seriously disturbing. I can't blame you for it leaving such a bad taste in your mouth (pun unintended). I got that spaceship cup too btw. It's been a daily part of my life for the past year. lol.

The ATT post show area was amazing for the time. You could make free long distance calls to friends around the country. They had a soundproof booth with a giant touch dial phone inside, like it was six feet tall and you'd push each button with your whole hand.

I don’t trust the liberal numbskulls to do the right thing with Spaceship Earth. They probably will theme it after a movie which I hate. That’s what they have done to everything else. They have made EPCOT into Magic Kingdom #2.

@@ddespair What in the hell did I say that made you think the world had passed me by. Just because I said they would continue to ruin EPCOT because they think they have to recreate movies with there pavilions. If that’s what you think then change the name from EPCOT or do you not know what it stands for. These pavilions do need updating but not from educational to just movie recreations. If I want to see a movie I can watch it on my television or computer. That’s like going to a race and seeing the car from Who Framed Roger Rabbit. That has nothing to do with embracing new ideas. The woke dummies running the show now are the ones not embracing NEW ideas.

Buckminster Fuller did not invent the geodesic dome. He worked for a while at the US Patent Office and copied many things from obscure patents that he thought were never going to be seen. But modern patent searches exposed his many plagiarisms. He never patented his "ideas" claiming they were for the good of humanity. But in reality it was because he knewthat patent searches would be made in order to file those patents and get approval. The 'prior art' as it was termed would quickly be discovered. The "geodesic" dome shape as he termed it was patented in 1875 I believe, as was the same map projection idea. Even his Dymaxion car was closely copied from a French design.

@@disfarers You're very welcome. Looking forward to more! By the way--did you do research on the Bell System? I'm not sure how old you are, but I was born the year they were divested. I'm somewhat of a telecom buff, so feel free to let me know if you ever need info in that regard. As far as Disney goes it's been ages. When I was last at EPCOT, Horizons was still in service. I hate what they've done to the parks.

I didn't dive too deeply into Bell Systems, though I did learn quite a bit more than I put into this episode. I left it out because the information just diverted too far from the topic at hand and it slowed my pacing too much. It sounds like I'm only a handful of years older than you though. I will definitely keep you in mind if I ever find myself looking for a knowledgeable telecom person (I never know where episodes are going to lead me. I'm working on an episode right now where I wish I knew a car mechanic.) I keep an open heart and mind about every change made to the parks, but I have to admit that I'm overall disappointed with what's continually done to Epcot. The latest opening of an alcohol stand alongside Mickey's meet and greet is a testament to how low things have fallen from the times Walt. But I'm always hopeful. The parks always change. You should totally check out the parks though. There's so MUCH since you've gone (I'm guessing mid to late 90s was the last time you visited Walt Disney World). I get that a lot of the more recent decisions have been dicey but they're still absolutely amazing overall!

The Global Neighborhood was introduced with the Jeremy Irons narration. During Walter Cronkite it was still Earth Station with Guest Relations and Worldkey. My source: me. I’ve worked at WDW since 1989 and worked Spaceship Earth in 1991. It was still Earth Station then.

Disney: (FL) let’s theme the whole back of a building so it doesn’t interrupt the sight lines from a whole other park. (CA) lets make sure all the major landmarks (like the castle, Matterhorn, big Thunder, the Batuu rocks, Space Mountain, the Carthay Circle tower, Guardian’s, Pixar wheel, Cars Land rocks, and grizzly peak are all well hidden from one another (or at least blended) to make sure people stay immersed Universal (California): yeah, you can see the Hogwarts castle clearly from the Simpson’s area, but who cares
