Helmets obviously protect against skull injuries, but as seen here, they don't do much against concussions, which can come from whiplash or blows to the chin. Think of a knockout punch in boxing. There's some discussion that in football, they can make concussions worse by making the head a bigger, heavier target.

Can’t tell you how many times they’ve saved what could have been a bad knock . Get some comfy ones and you don’t even know you’re wearing them. And kneeling in the snow (I do a lot for some reason) stops any cold working it’s way into your joints 😁👍🏻

You made an excellent call in stopping. I know everyone's ego is bruised when they fall and they want to get right back up and go back to it, but with a head injury like that especially being knocked unconscious, the right thing to do is call it a day and get checked for a concussion. I myself am gearing up to go snowboarding again for the first time in 20 years. One of my first purchases was a MIPS helmet. I'm also a motorcycle rider too though so I know about the importance of helmets. I can't imagine how bad he would have been hurt if he wasn't wearing a helmet in that situation. I would never go out on the slopes without one.

I haven't snowboarded in over decade and went to a local shop the other day to check out the gear. I was blown away at how light everything was, especially the boots and helmets. And, the helmets are sick now with all the movable vents. Helmets weren't as ubiquitous on the slops when I rode as they seem to be now. I'm sure they work better too. I've taken a beating with my modern MTB helmet and have barley been dazed; whereas I knocked out multiple times back in the day snowboarding with my helmet back then.

Concussion for sure. Once he said "its bright" thats one of the main symptoms. Same thing happened to me last year. Instead of catching the heel edge. On some freak accident stuff. I caught my toe edge and went from 30mph to 0mph on my face and scorpioned. Thankfully helmet, goggles, and wrist guards where my hand magically whipped in front of me kept me from breaking my nose. Almost tore my patella and ACL. All healed up and back at it. Glad Benton was good.

homie was out for awhile he 100% needs to get checked for a concussion. Also might be a good time to take a wilderness first aid course and learn a little about evaluating possible head/spinal injuries. The way you were manhandling your friend while he was passed out could easily have led to a worse outcome had he been in slightly worse shape. I know its scary when you're friend is knocked out and you wanna make sure they're good but when dealing with possible spine injuries you gotta be slow and careful and deliberate. Don't wanna accidentally paralyze your friends!

I had a buddy take a hard fall like that out of nowhere before and break his elbow. I had to haul butt down to the bottom of the chairlift and have them call patrol. They let me cut the lift line to get me back up to my buddies ASAP. I ended up helping patrol more on blocking of the sceen than the useless mountain safety people who did nothing but stand on their skis there till patrol barked at them to get their butts back up the hill and block off access to the drop. One of my HS friend's dad was on ski patrol at our local ski resort. You definitely did a great job on staying calm, calling it a day for him, and working concussion protocols for your friend so he can get help. I've been knocked out cold like that by a soccer ball driiled to my head by an over zealous varsity soccer player that didn’t like me being competitive with him in my HS PE class during an indoor soccer game on a rainy day. The PE teacher [who was also track team coach] said later I scared the crap out of him because I was completely out for over 30 seconds and classmates told me later i fell instantly backwards hard and my head bounced off the gym's wood floor. Concussions are no joke.

concussions require rest! If you got knocked out you have one. A second concussion within a matter of days can be fatal as it can trigger a runaway feedback loop of inflammation in the brain. Sensitive to light and wanting to puke are signs he definitely got concussed. Plus the agitation on wanting to ride more and getting all hyper. Concussions cause all of that. I had symptoms for months from a concussion where I didn't get knocked out or get sick to my stomach at all. Glad you shut him down. Rest up Benton, head injuries are nothing to mess with.
