In Asia, lots of riders love posi posi position with really stiff deck. It looks like alpine position but with a regular board. They do crazy tricks and focus on true deep carve. The way you need to ride with more than 40 angles is different. You need to use angulation more than upper body rotation. Japanese and Koreans are big fan of the position.

I learned to ride in the very early 90s when really posi posi was the only game in town it seemed back then. I do ride duck from time to time but really I ride posi posi (+27, +12) for 95% of my riding. I love the position. Switch sucks of course (more like riding backwards) but when it comes to ripping it forwards it's just such a powerful position. It allows you to get your hips facing more downhill and opens up your body for those huge carves. The main reasons I don't ride much duck these days is that I primarily love to turn and burn with my board on/in the snow rather than in the air or on a park feature. It's also because I'm carrying a lifetime of wear and tear on my body and any negative angle on my back foot causes me knee pain these days - I'm 52 and been riding for 32 years - and posi posi is just so easy on the knees for me. It's not a stance for a beginner (even though I learned that way) because it makes those early falling leaf drills and early turns etc much more difficult. Just saying that although you felt awkward in posi posi, it was clear that elements of your riding looked so nice in some moments there. Stick with it and add it to your arsenal of riding.

I am 51 and have been riding since 1989. I am posi myself and ride a big board for my size. It’s best in steep and deep powder when you want to go real fast. Stance all the way back and four turns in 1000’ of vert! I spent over 20yrs riding Jackson Hole and the Teton back country.

The problem with very high positive angles like the 45/45 you tried is that alignment of the knees gets mechanically bad. If you think of the knees as hinges the are, the "hing pins" are on very different line on the front and the back. This is why you can feel locked in place and not be able to move correctly. I run +59/+50 on my alpine snowboard. The hardboot bindings have toe-lift on the front and heel-lift on the back foot which corrects the alignment of the knees.

I started riding duck, but have been getting gradually more positive over the years. I now ride +23 +18 and find it's just fun for carving and steeps. This has inspired me to experiment some more! I grew up surfing rather than snowboarding, where a front-on (aka positive) stance is preferred to open up the shoulders for turns and improve flow, so find the positive angles give a more surfy feel to snowboarding too, which I enjoy!

Pro tip for positive stance angle riding. Keep the front and back angles 9-12 degrees different for best carving positioning. I used to ride 36/24 back in the 90s but over the decades have gone more and more neutral. Now I’m at 21/12. When I started snowboarding I came from skiing so I use the cross under carving technique which is why duck stance just doesn’t feel great for me.

+21 +6 is about where I ride. Really good directional control but not too excessive! Only thing I'll add is if you ride centered, you'll want to scoot back just a bit since you've now rotated both balls of your foot just a bit over center. Would be interesting to combine this all with an asym board built around positive foot angles. Adjust where the sidecut starts on each board to essentially center you. Oh and forward lean!

I've been riding with angles +30 +12 (regular) for many years. I rode an alpine board with more angles and when I realized that an alpine board does not provide as many opportunities as a regular one, I started using regular boards with these angles, since I mostly do carving anyway. The riding technique is different, but the speed control is no less if you know the technique. It's fun, but not suitable for a park.

This year is my 40th year snowboarding. I’ve seen everything. Late 90’s, maybe early 00’s I had a Rossi GS race board and plates I would break out for a handful of runs first thing. That board was a tank. 45 or more on both feet, narrow as hell. Scary as all get out at slow and medium speeds. As soon as your eyes were watering you were locked in and trenching. That’s as close to skiing as I’ve ever come. +27 +9 with some variation depending on the board anymore. Still can dig a trench and revert out when needed. I’ll keep an eye out for ya at PC this year.

Running a 42/42 on my Alpine board, still soft boots and regular bindings instead of the ski boots and base plates. It gives such an amazing tuck but since it's hard to find angled risers for regular bindings to get the angle for your back foot, I stacked three insoles into a wedge and placed them inside my boot. It gives the additional pressure you need for the back of your board when you lean that far forward, but the speed and lean you get in your turns is completely insane.
@hugotwenties

Not sure why you say “ski boots”. On alpine we use hard snowboard boots, Deeluxe, UPZ… some folks have used literally ski boots on the alpine plate bindings, but bootout was common problem since the base is so long

Alpine snowboarder with snowboard hardboots here. I run 60-65 front and 45-50 back. Its incredibly natural stance once you get used to it, although it is a carving only stance. But on softboots you dont have lateral pressure and your calves cannot work properly. Now, with some very hard snow softboots you could lay very nice carving.

So the logic of the +/+ is so that you can collapse your back knee forward into the front knee, which enables the deep vitelli turns/euro carves. Downside is you lose leverage during ollies and switching means going properly backwards. I find that once you internalize the collapsed knee one can go back to +/- and still collapse knee and get in some really deep carves. I used to watch you a lot Kevin during my early days. It’s really interesting to see things that are normal to me now can be novel to you. There’s no one way to grow in snowboarding and that’s the beauty of it. Thank you for instilling the love of snowboarding in me, and merry Christmas!

@@lukejuras8024 Everyone's different, but I hope it works for you. Maybe after you figure out certain techniques, consider dialing back incrementally. After 27/12, try 21/-12 before 15/-12. I'm currently at 21/-12, down from 30/-12. I've realized at 15/-12 I give up on a lot of control I came to trust on. I rely on the angle of the front foot for certain speed checks and emergency breaks on the big mountain lines - and that's more important to me than other things +15 at the front can give me. Let me know! Good luck!

+42/+21 over here for a few years now. It happened gradually and my knees ended up thanking me for some weird reason. I do a lot of tight tree runs and bumps so maybe double-posi suits that sort of thing. I really didn't start getting comfortable riding switch UNTIL I switched to double-posi; now switch front 3s are effortless but regular 3s take a lot more concentration.

The only reason to increase angles is to reduce or eliminate toe & heel drag. Once you have moved angles to the point where your toes and heels no longer line up over edge, you have lost the ability to pressure either edge effectively. Racers only run high angles, because the narrowness of the boards dictate it. Narrow boards are much faster edge to edge, hence narrow boards for slalom and GS. One of the reasons it became so difficult at the higher angles was, you fell out of the range of your “high back”. The lower leg movement was lateral as opposed to for & aft. In addition, soft boots don’t give you the lateral support you would need to ride such high angles, whereas an alpine set up with plastic/race boots would. Very Cool, fun to watch!

Nice video! You should always keep some 10-15 degrees or so between your feet. Just as when you ride a duckstance. Personally I've been riding hardboots on stiff carving boards and alpine racing boards for the last thirty of my forty years of snowboarding. Regarding stance angles I'm still playing around with them but I keep coming back to some 56-57 degrees on the front foot and 44-47 degrees for the back foot on my Swoard EC5. I also ride a narrower Super G board, with higher angles sometimes. The only drawback of going posi, posi I can think of is being hampered in the fakie department. The more forward your stance, the harder it gets to ride backwards or do anything other than just carving. However, the carving only gets better. Good luck on your stance angle journey. Go even further and get yourself a stiffer board and you'll be able to crank out some serious carving. Even on soft boots. Take a look at the F2 Eliminator for example (there are many others like it, basically look for BX boards)

Fun concept. I think it would have been better if you had a consistent section that you were carving on with a side hit or two that you normally boosted off of. For your next one I think you should start with maybe 21/-9 or similar spread and then rotate the rear angle to positive in 6 degree chunks. I rode 18/6 and 15/3 for many years before trying both of those with -6 in the rear. I am now riding 21/-3 and have played around with 21/9. (This video has motivated me to think about 21/3 for freestyle.)

Changed the rear to 0 and noticed a big difference and more confident on my part when it comes to turns and riding cat tracks. Gonna experiment more when I go to Brian Head in a few weeks. Maybe +9/-3 then +15/0 then -3 and see how that feels. All in all, for me, my back foot needs to be at 0 or at the most, -9 if I don't want to lose my personal confidence.

Now that you've experienced a race stance, you should do another video of you racing a skier. Just find a run that doesn't have flats because we want to see a snowboarder have a good chance at winning for a change.

I like a positive stance, but i find it overall more fatiging if i try to do it all day also my knees feel tweaked out. I can see how it's used in racing but not for just a day having fun on the mountain. Generally I don't like like I have as much contorl on my back foot unless I put in a lot more effort.

I started riding on a raceboard back in de 90’s, with hard boots. Had a very very race stance. And since I’ve learned it thay way, I have never tried to do a duck stance actually. Also because of my size 46 (eu), I just can’t do a 0 stance. I do want to try duck next time, but to me that is so unnatural to me.

Daaang this video was perfect to find. I'm an ex skateboarder now mountainbiker and now trying snowboarding for the first time at age 41. I've been thinking about these settings and not sure what to do. The only thing you missed was reversing your direction with these stances. We still have questions! You'll have to make this video again 😅

Ive been riding +30 +15 for a while. I only carve on groomed slope, no jump or park, sometimes if i feel like doing some powder or tree run, i use another board and lower the stance to +21 +6. My bindings are at 30 max, ive tried 36 24 but it felt like i was missing my highback. Since last year i also ride a Donek with 29.5 cm waist (i have 13US boots) so i think going to much forward it will become harder to turn it.

Been riding +30 +15 since the 90s. Tried less of an angle a couple times recently but the outside edge of my lead foot hurt like heck. I’m so used to aggressive angles that I’m trying to turn my foot when I ride a lesser angle. Not really sure how to come back from that.

For positive positive angles, use a open shoulder stance, it's way better ,because your hips are way more upen. also you use way more of your hips for turns.

Those aren’t crazy crazy stances, both feet positive is pretty common in carving stances, it’s becoming a trend in Asia where everyone now tries to learn carving and touching the snow, and they usually use snow boards brands like Gray, BC-stream or Ogasaka, tho none is available in the US

here's my weirdest stance, I think I've got most people beat: I borrowed a board from my buddy after my old one broke a couple days before, completely forgetting that he is goofy and I am regular. I ended up riding and entire day after driving 2 hours to the mountain with a -9, -12 stance. He had the original stance as positive positive. lets just say my ankles did not enjoy the twisting from me turning to face downwards while my feet were aimed up the mountain.

For a short, freestyle board those angles have no sense and will have not much benefit to overall riding experience, however when You get into hardboot (alpine) style snowboarding. 45 and 45 on both feet is quite conservative. I ride on an older slimmer hardboot board and my angles are 65 front and 62 back. This is nowhere near the extreme as I've seen riders with 85 up front but It's an edgecase. Most hardboot pros go for anything between 45 and 60 nowadays.
