Snowdog Build TEST RUN! Part 5

IT'S DONE!! Taking the Snowdog out for a TEST RUN!
Actually "Snowdog" is a brand name. These are called Motodogs, or Track Sleds.
If anyone is interested in building one of these, look up the Facebook group "Track Sled Builds Of The North". Lots of great info on there from folks that have done this before.
Lots of Russian videos here on You Tube also. This is a Russian invention and they seem to be popular over there.
Really, it wasn't that hard to do. Gathering the parts and studying up on how to do it took me about 2 years. Actual building time was about two or three weeks.
I have no idea about the cost since most of the parts were scavenged. The engine was the most money. (420cc/14 horse) I think I paid about $300 on sale, but it's a $400 engine.
Electric start would be nice to have, but costs more. I'm guessing I might have $600 into this, but the commercial Snowdog brand ones sell for $3,000-$4,000 depending on model and extras.

Mules are more dependable though! Unless they run of, you know they are going to start and bring you home again. This type of thing is great for taking you places you don't want to walk home from!

I was raised on a ranch northern NM .. dad never would buy a 4 wheel drive ..said too much maintenance and get you to try to go places you should n't try to go lol ... we spent a lot of time snowed in lol .. I tell you what you are handy ... I try sometimes but I'm better suited for working with animals .. I will be 60 this year and just now learned that

That's the best part. You can use these without snow. Dragging out a deer or bringing in bear bait, it might work great.

I was hoping he would use his more. I was wanting to try to make one before he got his. When he did, I thought it would be great to find out what he liked and didn't like about his. His has two tracks, so it's wider and less tippy, but I have heard that the space between the tracks will high center on the snow so you can't go through very deep snow? He did say his did pretty good until the snow got too deep. I'm wondering how this one will do too. If the snow is fluffy powder, it might just burrow under it? With a snowmobile, those skis help keep you on top, so this might not work very well? I guess I'll find out!

@@MuskratOutdoors i had an idea if yours doesnt work out and its like a snow mobile but in the middle the hinge is so your drive is in front but the skis in back i think yours will work better then my idea and i think it will do just fine i would say powder isnt the easy part too fluffy

FYI...snowboard or a couple of cafateria trays epoxyed together for runners underneath sled and use the boot brackets for foot holds...off you go...Cheers from Maine

Good idea. Anything to keep your feet from slipping around. I did buy that blue snowboard in the background against the shed to cut in half and use like one of those trail groomer sleds. I might put it up front instead for powder snow if it needs it? It's about a foot or so wide, so it might help stay on top of loose powder snow?

Coming along well👍 Those engines are great for the money but the key to making them last a while is oil changes very regularly!

The book said to change it after 5 hours the first time. It doesn't say how often after that though. Do you think the synthetic oil is better in them?

Yes fully synthetic oil. I'd do an oil change after about 20 mins from new and you'll most likely see alot of particles in that oil 🙉. The more often you change it the better, it takes so little oil. Oil is so cheap compared to keep changing engines👍

No, I haven't done that yet, but I think it should have something like that. I have seen a kill switch that was a magnet on a cord you attached to your wrist too. That was on a treadmill, but would probably work for this too. I think it should have something!

Thank you! It was kind of fun to do really. I'm anxious to find out how well it works. I think for running traps, it will work pretty well. Other that just time on short Winter days, I don't need to go fast. I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing this is about 6-10 miles an hour. I'm not good at math, but timing the time it took to do a lap around that quarter mile race track, I think it's going about 10 mph on the flat. Going up the mountain is probably a little less.

Real nice build, once those changes are made it will be a slick ride up the mountain. Watched a fellow haul logs out of the bush with a Snowdog. He used an old wheel barrow as a sled that allowed for a wider stance and stability.

That's a great idea! A wheel barrel bucket would be shaped just right. I was told that someone around here has one they use for skidding logs for firewood also. I don't think I know who it is though. I didn't recognize the name at least.

Don’t forget that if you gear it up too high it’ll be harder on that clutch and you will for sure burn belts up, if you can do a bit better than jogging speed on a warm summer day then you’ve got it about perfect in my opinion. I’ve been looking at the way the trail groomers are setup behind these machines an I think it makes more sense than the sled idea for a place to stand, then you can pull the toboggan behind the groomer with a tarp over it so it won’t get full of snow and you’ll have a nice trail to ride on the trap line 😁 Great Job on the build an the video 👍 Hope we see a bunch more of this machine in the future 😃

Thank you! I think it was you that told me about that group? If it was, THANK YOU! It's a great group, full of good ideas. I'm not a Facebook fan....too many liberals that make me mad! This one is a keeper though! Maybe you noticed that blue snowboard against the shed? I got that from the second hand store thinking of cutting it in half and building something similar to those trail groomers to stand on. I'm also thinking it might work in the front of this in deep powder to help keep on top of the snow? I'm not sure if it will need it or not yet. The only real advantage to speed would be to go farther on short Winter days. One place I would like to trap is 16 miles one way. A 4 hour round trip would be a long day. I'm guessing this is only going about 8 mph? Somewhere between 6-10 I think? Maybe I just can't go that far. That's OK too.

@@MuskratOutdoors The real deal Snowdog is governed at 20mph according to their sales pamphlet but they have a big clutch and from what I’m told you don’t want to get going that fast on em anyway... As for deep powder I think you’ll figure out the limit of that machine pretty quick and want nothing to do with it after a certain point, most important part will be to keep a trail established... but you’ve probably done some thinking about that already... Snowboard just mite work but could be a little small on the lip for deeper snow, I like the other fella who suggested a wheelbarrow but if you get too wide it’ll take more power to pull... just remember that the snowdog sleds have a ring of square tubing under the top lip of the sled so they can get away with pulling several heavy sleds tied together... and they use the plastic runners your original snowmobile skid had so the bottom of the sled won’t wear thru... Sorry I’m rambling I’m kinda distracted with work today, stay warm 👍

@@PuskwaskaOutdoors Not rambling at all. I'm glad to get any advice on this stuff! I went to the snowmobile place yesterday and ordered a replacement throttle lever and cable for an actual Snowdog. I figured that would be the best way to rig up my homemade version. They had a Snowdog there in the showroom for sale and I looked at it a little closer. Theirs has a gearbox type transmission instead of just a jackshaft. I'm guessing that is for the reverse to be able to work. Because it's enclosed, I can't tell what the gearing is though. The torque converter on theirs is a lot bigger than what I bought also. I think I'll have to change to a bigger one. Another thing I didn't realize, is that my engine has a stop screw that limits the throttle movement. I can turn it up some and probably get a little more RPM out of it. I don't want to go a lot faster, but a little bit more, say 15MPH would be nice.

@@MuskratOutdoors Yeah you might be ok to turn it up a bit, likely has a governor in it to keep the rotating bits on the inside, I’ve got a small tachometer I use to tune chainsaws and small engines to check RPM’s and keep things on the longevity side of a tuneup... I think if your heart is set on going faster tho you’ll be changing that sprocket... Have you clocked it’s actually speed? You can get an app for on a smart phone called GPS Speedometer, comes in handy for such things 👍

I would like to kindly suggest that on the free end of your jackshaft making someway to attach a handle. My thoughts are when you are loading the sled you get the rear of the sled in the bed of the truck then you crank the handle to assist in the loading.

Spray the sled bottom where your feet are with rock guard so you don’t slip. Nice rig :)

Don't go too close to the tree branches with Lilly on there. She's likely to actually grab hold and hang on at those speeds haha! It looks like a fairly simple machine but there's a lot of little nuances with it by the looks of it. I don't know why but I was picturing you riding by some of those bighorn sheep while they look at you like you're crazy haha.

Add a small removable crank on the end of the jack shaft then you can use it to crank the sled backwards.

It might need one. The ring I used will allow some flex, but a swivel would sure do more. I don't plan on getting too crazy with it though, so it might be enough.

The you tube channel about skidding logs out was Martins Old cabin. He loves his store bought snowdog. Just wondering if you bought the XL size of jetsled if you wouldn't be more comfortable standing and have room for supplies and stuf. I was also thinking that if you are putting metal runners under the sled you could build a frame for a seat in the sled so you could sit down. Use your phone's gps to see how fast your going , there is a GPS speedometer and odometer app we use on our bikes when we are out that works very well and its free. Enjoyed your videos thank you very much for making them.

Thank you very much. Ha! I'm one of those dinosaurs that still has a flip phone! No GPS on it. I did change the throttle cable after this and got quite a bit more speed out of it. I think it's just about right now. I have an old plastic barrel that is pretty thick. If I cut it and unroll it, I can get a 6 foot long piece of plastic. With a 1 foot front lip, I could make a 5 foot long sled with a standing rack in the back like a dog sled has. I think that will be one of the next things to make for this.

I think this sled is a little too small for a dog. On the leading sled I have metal guides from the bottom and the sled is very stable. Also, a large sled stabilizes the dog when moving. We made a towing device and with two sledges the dog rides well. In some I stand myself and secondly, my friend and cargo is going. Speed is not an advantage of this, the main thing is to get to the place.

That makes a lot of sense. I have seen bigger sleds like this for sale. I have a dog sled type one I might try also. That way, someone else can go along too if it will pull that much weight. The sled for sure need some metal runners under it. On the ice, it wants to slide out from under you. I don't think I want to go much faster really. The only advantage would be going farther on short Winter days, but maybe that isn't a good thing to do anyway!

I saw a video from Russia where a guy was dragging home a moose with one of these. I have heard of people dragging firewood with them too! I'm not sure my gearing would do that, but it could probably be changed. I'm guessing this is going between 6-10 mph? Plenty fast enough really, but it dose seem a little slow for going very long distance.

@@MuskratOutdoors the only real problem I could see me doing, is not taking enough gas, and having a 2000 pound moose all cut up, and I am 10 miles or more from nowheresville, that’s something I would probably inadvertently end up doing!

Actually, they are fun to build! I'm not sure my measurements would do you any good because they all seem a little different. What I did for length, was to adjust the snowmobile adjusters all the way in, then I put two 2x6 boards under the track to shape it about the way I want it to be, and measured that length. Does that make sense? Tomorrow, I'll have a video that didn't turn out very well about "outrigger skis" I just added to mine. It was what this needed! Much better now! @@MrTmmc1962 Your welcome. If I can help at all, please let me know. What size engine are you using? On flat ground/frozen lakes the 6 1/2 horse Predator engine seems popular. Mines a 420cc/14 horse, and pretty top heavy, but I'm climbing hills. I think a 8-10 horse would be perfect.

@@MrTmmc1962 Good engine, but pretty top heavy at 70 pounds. Mine wanted to tip over pretty easy, but I just added a video about skis off to the side of it. So far, that has made all the difference! I need to try it more, but now it can't tip over nearly as easy. The skis are removable also.

Mess with your Jack bar gear size will you get your toque and speed dialed into where it suits you

Thanks! Gearing is kind of hard to get right! I tried several sprockets before getting one I like. It's a little slow now, but I'm not sure I want to go much faster.

I’m wondering how it would work if you put like a small outrigger ski on either side of the snow dog it would make it less tippy?

That was my thought too. Put an old ski mounted on each side at about 30 degrees to keep it from tipping. I was also thinking runners on the sled and that’s what it sounds like Muskrat is going to do.

Actually, I bought a set of skis yesterday at the second hand store to do that if it needs them. I'll have to play with it a bit more and see.

I bought some used skis yesterday just for that! Ha! I'm not sure if it needs them yet or not. I might ad them anyway though. It couldn't hurt anything.
