Remember doing a gig with my dad at the Snowdown Working Mens club December 1992, fond memories, as I grew up in the 1980s in Preston Nr Wingham and remember these pits.

My grandfather Sidney Irons worked down that pit in the 40s & 50s, as did my uncle William Irons right up until it’s closure in 1987.

+Mark Lawrence So true, all this country has now is extortion by direct and indirect taxation, sad really when you think of all of the industries now closed down, its suicide of a nation.

Yes most of the collieries are now razed to the ground.Just like gasworks, steel works, pottery kilns and northern mills. In their place we have tescos and sainsburys and car parks. This is NOT an improvement on the landscape ! This could be become a wonderful heritage site just like the Big Pit Iron furnace at Blaenavon in South Wales. Just needs some investment. Don't let them pull it down KEEP YOUR HISTORY !

Used to run from NCB central store ( WIGAN) to snowdown with machinery, stores, a panzer chain, many years later having left NCB, I delivered to a industrial there.
