How oddly fascinating it was to watch this tonight with the discussion of the "Spanish Flu" of 1918 amidst our current Covid-19 Pandemic. What an interesting family story! Great looking soap, BTW!❤

I would love to hear more about Dorothy. You have such a big heart to clean up her grave & to bring flowers to her gravesite! On another note, I believe you had said that you watch Holly from Missouri River Soap. She had been making some 30 pound batches in a huge slab mold. I’m in awe that the two of you are lifting & pouring these enormously heavy batches. Just amazing for me to watch!

Love that story. That stuff fascinates me. I have a little story of my own. I grew up in Newfoundland, Canada where pretty much everyones ancestors came from England and Ireland and always I heard a story about either my 2 or 3 times great grandfather who murdered someone and fled England on board a ship which then got stuck in the ice off the coast of Newfoundland. He jumped ship and walked to shore and that’s where he settled. So anyway I moved away from home and across the other side of the country, settled down and bought a house and after meeting our neighbors discovered that they had the same last name as my Grandfather. He was also from Newfoundland. He told me he grew up hearing a story that his ancestor was one of three brothers who came over from England and one of the brothers had killed someone so once they got to Newfoundland they all parted ways and settled in different parts of the province. I’ve tried to trace my family back but I get stuck at my 2 times great Grandfather, George Peddle. I can’t find any information on him about where he was born or how he came to Newfoundland. Anyway, sorry for such a long story. I look forward to hearing about what you find out about this little girl.

I look forward to hearing more about Dorothy. I love hearing of family history - when we lived in UK, I loved going through the old cemeteries and looking at the history. I was making candles as a hobby and one day my Grandad told me how he would watch his grandma (who raised him) make paraffin candles back in the 30's & 40's as a practical thing and would sell to other families. He had never told me this before but asked if I thought about turning my hobby into a business. Two weeks later he passed away and I shortly after, I turned my hobby into a business. Several people in my family have done family trees through ancestry and I have been given a copy. It is amazing to read and the part I have goes back to 1770. Some have lead short lives by todays standards but some lived into their 70's

That was an interesting piece of your family history, not too long ago so a little surprised it wasn’t passed down. Such a sad part when you find a little child died. But I am glad you are fixing up her grave. Seeing unloved graves is one of the most depressing sights on this earth. Oh and well done lifting that heavy bucket.

I too found a grave that fascinated me. Her name was Abby. Her grave is in a family plot in the woods near our home up in Maine. Not our family, they're all long gone, but she was only 3. She died in 1706. I too wondered what her life was like and why she died, but so many did back then..... She buried with her mum.

I began my my own family tree earlier this year, and found that I am actually a direct descendant of a landed family from Yorkshire as well as a baronet. The stories you find come to life, and you become so invested in the lives of your ancestors. It's so amazing to learn where you truly come from! One of my ancestors was reputedly murdered by Parlimentarian soldiers during the English Civil War. It can be such an emotional experience discovering the harships of your ancestors and what they went through in a different time - some things that nowadays we just can't imagine. And, like yourself, I did my fair share of crying when I read of the tragedies and hardships. I do think I need to visit my ancestral home at some point!

Family history can be very interesting and devastating at the same time. Both my maternal great grandparents immigrated to the Pacific Northwest from Norway. I never met them. My grandma's biological mother passed away in a house fire, along with a couple of her siblings, I believe, when my grandmother was just a baby. She was placed in an orphanage for several years until her father returned from Norway with a new wife. Those formative years in the orphanage took their toll. Us grandkids never really saw anything unusual, but my mother has some heart wrenching memories.

I’m watching your older videos (since I’m new to soaping) and sitting here during the covid pandemic, listening to you talk about Dorothy probably passing by the flu pandemic - bet when you made this video you couldn’t have dreamed we’d be here today. Loved listening about your family history and can’t help but think - what made you notice her grave after so many times visiting the cemetery? Always makes me wonder about the forces in nature we know nothing about.

I live on Vancouver Island, off the west coast of Canada. My grandfather was a coal miner from Cardiff, Wales who came here and worked in a copper mine at Anyox, British Columbia. At the time it boasted being the 3rd largest smelter in the British Empire. The price of copper bottomed out, the mine and smelter closed, and the town was deserted. Now the place my Dad was born doesn't even exist except in history books....

Hi Gail from NZ, my friend visited your shop on her travels, at my request. Love the snowdrift soap. Especially love the family story, keen to know what you discover. My soap hobby business is named after my paternal grandmother whom I never met. She was born in Salisbury 1890s named Lottie Alice, hence Lottie Cottage Soap. I met my biological father in my mid thirties, (I'm now in my 60s) after my younger sister's sleuthing efforts. So as the years go by we learn bits and pieces. So keep searching, that little girl will be happy to receive your flowers.

I wish I knew you. I feel such a bond with you. We share many of the same passions and interests. I am somewhat of a loner I guess, so it’s nice to hear your stories. I was born in the 60s” and am a child of the 70s and 80s. Thank you for sharing your soaping ( which is always beautiful) and your stories. 😉❤️

Snowdrift is lovely! Understandable that it sells out quickly, will you still need to make more this year? I enjoyed hearing about your sleuthing skills. You’re putting what you’ve picked up from watching the true crime shows to use to learn about your family history. How cool is that? Poor little Dorothy! It’s so sweet that you’re doing something special for her. My youngest sister fell down the genealogy rabbit hole about 25 years ago. When she ran into a dead end in the US she traveled to England, Ireland and Scotland to do more research. She found so much information that one visit wasn’t enough time, so she enrolled at Royal Holloway, earned her Masters and PHD in medieval history while flushing out the family history. Looking forward to hearing more about Dorothy, Ava and what ever else you discover about your family history!

I saw some spouts on etsy you might give a try. Type "Silicone slip on pour spout" in the search field. It might help with your pouring out of that large pot. Family history is facinating. Please continue your story! This summer my daughter and I visited the graveside of Calvin Baxter a great uncle who died at the age of two in 1913 of the croup. His older sister Dorothy would have been 8 when your Dorothy died. She lived on to marry at 17 and died at 23 from complications of childbirth in 1934, leaving a 5 year old daughter at home.

What a lovely family story! Don't you love Ancestry? I was adopted and found my birthmother on Ancestry. She came from a very prominent family and lived less than 50 miles from me most of my life. Sadly, she passed away before I found her. Her family did know then or now about me as I was the skeleton in the family closet, so to speak. I am very close to finding my birth father, who does not know of me. I also discovered that I am Scottish/Irish! I have loved learning of my roots. I must say, I've gone down the rabbit hole of Ancestry and all that can be found there. Please keep us updated on your search regarding Dorothy and your family members!

Our family name is Lane and dates back to about the 11th century. An ancestor was the sister of Catherine Parr, but the bit that captivated me most was in the 19th century with a family of Js. I'd have to dig up the exact person but without having to do that I can tell you there were quite a few sons - Jacob, Jeremiah, John, Josiah, James and finally....Ebenezer. That one had me laughing for days. Makes an eyebrow go up on that last when to ponder the reasons for skipping the family's traditional J name. The ancestry bug bit me back in my twenties and that gene was passed on to my youngest, the younger half of my twin sons, Joshua. No, his twin's name does NOT start with a J. lol! He's adding many more names onto the family tree and you're right about it being very addictive! It's a mystery we love to solve when approaching another faceless name to add onto an all new branch.

Can you do an update on the grave? I would love to see how you fixed it up. My moms side of the family’s information stops around my great grandparents. They’re from Puerto Rico. My grandmother’s family were from Spain. Apparently, when my great grandmother was born, her father stuck around for only a few months and then left back to Spain, never to be heard of again. My dads side of the family is from Colombia. All I know is that my great grandmother (my grandmother’s mom) was Black and Italian. The city where my dad is from was a salve trade town. Lots of African slaves were placed there because it’s a coastal town.

I think any family history is interesting, be it mine or someone else’s. I wish I had traced my family sooner though. One branch I traced to England. I would have to go and actually research the archives in England to find out more, as it is not published information yet. I wish I had known sooner, as I lived in England for 3 years and could have done the research. Lol. I loved it there, Peterborough area. I was sad to move back. Old graveyards have always fascinated me and I love reading the headstones. I did however find out that one of my relatives on my father’s side is the man who actually did the penmanship for the Declaration of Independence. So if you look at the document, it is his handwriting that you see. Found that interesting. Maybe you could find more info on the mother from Dublin archives. Cheers.

How amazing! So weird when you find out these things. It's like half the time we live in our bubbles without making time to find stuff out. I've loved doing this. We think Eva may have changed her name in order to board the boat, hence why there's no mother or father on ancestry. But also the census records weren't available so it could be that...? Who knows. Shame not to be able to find out though.
