Hi everyone, it's great to be back! Now that I'm learning 'how to do KZbin' from the experts at Changer Studio (thanks Screen Queensland for supporting this amazing program!) I'm excited to get more consistency in my videos and how I share them. I do have two channels, which makes it a little more tricky (I love my sourdough baking just as much as my soap making 🥰) but I'm working out a plan to share more regularly and predictably, even if it's not every week! (I've never been able to do that anyway 🙄). Anyway, just wanted to say hi and thanks so much for watching my videos and supporting me over the years. I hope all the newbies get some joy and encouragement from this video! And more to come next month... Ps. Make sure you check out the video description, the recipe link is there! 🧼💚 Have a great weekend! xx Elly

So glad you're back Elly!! You've been missed! ❤ I know it's been a few days so I hope you see this. Thanks in part to you I'm doing well at soap making but what I'm struggling with is how to make my recipes the correct size for my mold?? I always make too much and that's wasteful. I watched your video and know my mold is 55 oz total but still can't figure out how much total oils I need to fit perfectly in my molds? Using soapcalc but still always have too much soap batter left over.

I think you need to weigh, not use tablespoons. If things are getting weighed in grams there is no way to match that accurately with tablespoons.

Aloha! Beginners out there: Have a go!! I've watched many of Elly's videos and, as a newby, I have made more than a handful of batches now. Out of those, only one was suspect, but it did eventually set itself up (patience). My family and friends are very impressed and they love the soap that has been gifted to them (different sizes, shapes, scents, colors). I also have a batch of liquid laundry soap (c/o Elly's recipe) that I am using downstairs in the laundry room, and a smaller container, a recycled ketchup squeeze bottle, in the upstairs bathroom for quick hand-wash items. Elly is a wonderful teacher! Go for it ~ Happily Hobby Soaping in Hawaii. 🤙PS. My 98 y/o Grandma saw the soap batches drying on the rack and said, "Good! Now we don't have to go to the store and buy, buy, buy." >> I'll take that as a Big Win 😀

Aloha! 🤙Back again 4 weeks later. I used the milk carton idea as inspiration for my newest batch, currently saponifying overnight. Since Grandma gets Meals on Wheels delivered (senior meal service), there is always the school-lunch-size milk cartons available. I combined Elly's Shaker Honey-Castille recipe (Loved It > this time with turmeric infused olive oil) with the milk carton idea this afternoon. I have to keep reminding myself NOT TO PEEK! Since the Shaker Soap recipe is a small batch, I used 3 cartons (each a half-pint/8 fl oz/236 mL), and filled the cartons ~2/3 full (it's still a good sized bar; just right for Gram's grip). Tomorrow's going to be an exciting reveal 😁 Mahalo Elly for another wonderful idea!! 🤙

You can do it, I have faith in you! A trick I use to get started with something I've been putting off- I dedicate a container to hold all the ingredients on day 1. I add ingredients one day at a time, a spoon, an oil, a bottle, a measuring cup, the stick blender, etc. Something about keeping it to just one a day takes a lot of pressure off of starting a whole new project. When all the items are assembled, I can put the bucket/bag/box of items to use immediately, or more often, I need to put it away temporarily. When that happens, my next step is to make the project more inviting by making a display as beautifully as I can. By touching and familiarizing myself with the ingredients, it sheds the fear of the new, removing one of the blocks keeping me from actually starting it. Walking by the ingredients so nicely assembled inspires pride and encouragement, replacing the fear and worry. Helpfully when I go to start, everything I need is already together! Happy soap making, you totally got this. 💖

It is so lovely to go back to basics, as a refresher, and as an alternative choice to including all the wonderful clays, sugar, salt, sodium lactate etc. This makes a very quick soap making exercise, not only for BRILLIANT BEGINNERS; but also for when time is short, and some ingredients are scarce. You still get beautiful bars of soap to use, and share with others. Thank you Elly! 🐾🥰

Hi Elly, I have been making soap for a few years now and love your videos. I came across this one and was very excited, because I have a lot of different oils, and loved the fact that you shared this recipe. I made a loaf of soap on Saturday, following the recipe, using coconut oil and cocoa butter as my hard fats/butters and then I used a combination of rice bran oil, castor oil, sweet almond oil, avocado oil and walnut oil. I entered all of the information into SoapCalc to make sure that the Soap Bar Quality was in a good range and it was. I usually do the CPOP method for my soaps, and put the mold in the oven with just the oven light on and left it for 24 hours. The following day, I removed the loaf from the oven and took the soap out of the parchment lined mold. When I was removing the parchment from the soap and put the loaf on the counter, I found that it was very soft. The outside of the soap looked pretty normal. I had found a video you had posted about the gelling stage of soaps, and I thought that might be what was going on, so I put the soap back in the oven with the light on and after 3 days, it is still very soft. I'm not sure if I did something wrong, or if it was just too many different oils that I used. It traced nicely when I poured it into the loaf mold. Do you have any suggestions that I should try to try to save it? I'm not sure if I should try to rebatch it, because I don't know how to identify the problem! Any suggestions are appreciated! Thank you

Thanks for your wonderful tutorials! I just made my first batch of EESM Beginner’s Soap using your recipe! I made it in individual molds. I did goof and overpoured about 5 grams of oil. Just like you said, it’s ok. Next time, I will weigh individual oils!😊 I put the tray of small molds in the oven with the light on for 24 hours. Probably peeked way more than I should, but they unmolded beautifully! I made notes in my soap notebook and you are known as ‘EESM’ because of how many recipes and tips I copied down from your awesome videos! I wanted to attempt getting familiar with Soapcalc using your Beginner’s Soap Recipe as a jumpstart. I think I am missing some key details; lye concentration and superfat %. and maybe something else? I couldn’t arrive at the same lye, water amounts as the recipe when I got to the final page. I watched your video about soapcalc, but the recipe used there is a different one. I did learn the Beginner recipe is 70% olive oil, 20% coconut oil, and 10% tallow (or alternatively shea, cocoa, mango or lard). Again, I am just trying it out, so my numbers could be off. I thought I might be able to use the percentage feature of Soapcal to use my leftover ingredients, determine appropriate lye/water concentration and make another batch. I am a bit blocked by the lye/water concentration concept even after watching several of your videos and thought it might help to see it/experience it…lol.

Just a heads up too, if you feel nervous about the lye or DO get the lye solution on your skin, douse it in vinegar BEFORE dousing in water. Vinegar neutralises the caustic soda, water will make the irritation worse. Keep some vinegar on hand just in case.

Hello again, my batch is soft coming out of the paper mold. Its been 24 hours since I poured it. I am going to wait another 8-12 hours and see if it changes. Have you had soft soap before, and what should a beginner do about it? Thank you so much for all this valuable teaching! PS --my sourdough cinnamon rolls are proofing now, another thing I've learned about and experimented with alongside you!

Lovely to see you again Elly! Your videos are so calm and peaceful. They gave me the confidence to try soapmaking several years ago. So glad you're back. Thanks Belinda, yes we call our 'counters' the 'kitchen bench' here :) It's just PVC plastic sheeting I bought by the metre from the hardware and cut to size. You can also use a cheap plastic coated tablecloth, but it won't last as long.
