How to Pick Up and Hold a Hedgehog

I did a video today with Ms. Teazel on how to pick up and hold your new hedgehog, which can be a pretty intimidating experience if the hedgehog is very aggressive and you have never handled a hedgehog before. The key to picking them up is to do it from below. If you try to pick them up from the top they will curl into a ball with your fingers in the center, which will be painful as you will have spines pressed against your fingers.
Your new hedgehog will get more comfortable with being held if you handle them every single day. Some need more time than others to get comfortable around you. Be persistent and don't give up on them!
In case you didn't know, the African pygmy hedgehog is a domesticated species of hedgehog. They are not like the wild hedgehogs that roam around in the UK and other regions of the world. It is not a good idea to pick up wild hedgehogs because if the spine would happen to cut you, there is a high chance for infection. This is because hedgehogs lick their spins with with their saliva, which can sometimes have venom or other toxic chemicals (it is used as a defensive mechanism since hedgehogs are resilient to venom)

They can live 8-10 years ig properly cared for. People who assume that they die in 3-5 years generally stop putting the same effort into care as they did earlier on. If you got your hedgie as a baby, 5 years is definitely middle aged :)

Same with hedgehogs, They estimate 2 - 5 years in the wild depending (could be longer if things go well). When I was a child and living on a farm, I found 2 baby hedgehogs. One was hiccuping and the other was sneezing. It was so cute.

At night they would move around in the bushes and when you approach them they would start doing their hisses. Seems odd to me, because they don't even really try to hide like other nocturnal animals. Basically they give themselves away as soon as they hear your footsteps.

It's as much lack of habitat, slug pellets, people paving or shingling their gardens and putting up impassable walls or fencing. Houses are being built on green and brown belt land, modern farming methods have increased field sizes and destroyed hedgerows, and use of pesticides, herbicides and fungicides poison their foods or them directly, same goes for garden chemicals and rat poison, etc. There are more roads and cars than ever, but I don't think that's the main problem.

I got a wild hedgehog mailed to me in a box I picked it up when it was in ball form (it was surrounded with bubblewrap) and put it right next to a grave the spiky guy was kinda big and figuratively not prickly when I came to check if it left it was gone and I never thought of it again until I saw this video
