Tip for welding 2 cylinder type things together - get a piece of angle iron, support it so it sits like a V and put the cylinders in there and tack them together. If they're different diameter, figure out the math to shim the side for the smaller one (by the difference of the radius of the two - if you have a 2 inch rod and a 1inch rod you have to weld, radius is gonna be 1 in and 0.5 in, so you have to bring up the smaller one half inch, so shim it with half inch pads on the angle iron) You will get them within a few thou of dead center each time, not to mention straight (as straight as your angle iron is).

Andrew, welding the nut to a broken bolt is a great trick! Add this to it for even better result, after you weld the nut onto the bolt spray the nut with cold spray! Any freezing spray. Try to not spray the material the bolt is in. The cold shrinks the nut and bolt away from the material the bolt is stuck into making it smaller and easier to get out!!!! Works like magic!

To get the two parts welded up and have them be perfectly center, if you have a lathe, you can put each part into the lathe and machine out a 1/4"-3/8" diameter hole into each one, then use some steel rod and turn it so it's a nice snug fit into the holes, then use that to center your parts, then I would definitely tig weld it as well as do some rosette welds for extra strength.

What an awesome build. Love the driveshaft alignment trick for welding. I usually tack up, chuck it in the lathe and tap it concentric, protect the lathe with a welding blanket, then run it slow for a rollout weld. After that you can flame straighten the rest
@eformance6 жыл бұрын
If you had a lathe and wanted to transplant the drive stub, the way to do it is to cut off both pieces, then drill and ream them for a dowel pin. You assemble both parts of the shaft wit ha dowel pin in the center for alignment. Ideally you'd weld it with TIG on a rotary axis (a fancy positioner isn't necessary, just rotate it smoothly around).

The suspension is so stiff because the track is too tight and the swivel shafts are frozen. You adjust your track by pulling down on the bottom with a fifteen pound weight and having it sag about two inches. Then you spin the track to see if it's running true, in the middle.
@AndrewCamarata6 жыл бұрын
Good advice.

probably stiff because the skid has to be installed with some preload in it if you bolt it relaxed like you did it won't have any preload and will bind. For example a skidoo 136"skid in a zx chassis installs at 30.25" but relaxed is about 30.75"
