Thank you for not acting like comparing huge traditionals with moderns is an apples-to-apples comparison. I have enough stuff to do that I don’t want to have to work on snowshoes, too, but I have modern snowshoes ranging from 8x25 Tubbs Couloirs to 12x42 GV Wide Trails (8 pairs in all, in addition to a couple pairs of women’s ‘shoes for loaners.) The snow has to be pretty dry and fluffy for the GVs not to keep me near the top!

I tried the old wooden style once when I volunteered on Mount Rainier on the ranger lead snowshoe tours. What a disaster, zero traction, they were like roller skates. Of course there is nothing flat up there and the trails are pretty well packed down and sometimes frozen. When the snow freezes over you definitely need a snowshoe with cleats. With fifteen feet of snow you still need some floatation off trail and the MSRs do a good job.

Hi Wade, a few years ago me and my wife were looking to get out of UK and thought about Canada but then when we looked at the climate we got put off. Loving the way you Canadians love the cold and snow so much! Seems strange to a Brit but maybe if we’d have gone we would get to love it too. 😄

Well we have one or two expat Brits and they seem to be doing fine lol!🤣 Winter can easily last 6 months where I am, that's a long time to not be outdoors! Thanks for your comment my friend, made me smile😀. Wade

I’ve gotten close to 2 dozen people hooked on snowshoeing in the past 7 or 8 years. So many people hate winter, mainly because they think they have to stay inside. Not if you have snowshoes! It’s much, much less expensive than skiing, the learning curve is next to nothing, and you don’t have to drive to a mountain and pay for the privilege. I’ve owned a bunch of modern snowshoes, nearly every major brand, and my opinion is that you Canadians make the best ones - GV and Louis Garneau.
@Woodswalker19654 жыл бұрын
You are so right my friend. The best antidote for the winter blues is to get out and play in the snow! I actually just got a set of GV Snowshoes, the quality is top notch as you say. Thanks for your comment and insights, take care👊

I have a pair of the Denalis and a pair of more traditional ones. Out here on the west coast the only snow we're likely to see is in the mountains so it's almost always gonna be the denalis for me. But when I lived in Ontario I used the traditional shoes more. One thing I've found is that the sinew tends to stretch out in wet snow and if you use them often in the wet stuff they stay stretched out.
@Woodswalker19655 жыл бұрын

Love snowshoeing, did it my entire life. What a work out! If can add to this for anyone interested in the sport is probably the Huron’s in traditional with leather bindings is the best all around excluding wet snow conditions. And don’t bother with those magnesium things. I have to agree with you about snow conditions, I never understood the weight ratting, it’s all about the snow. Nice line up great topic Wade.

Great video Wade. I have a pair of modern (Atlas 1030) I use most often (when we have enough snow) because of the tight, steep and rough terrain in my area. Hello Wade. I like traditional stuff and those Huron/Algonquin stule Babiche snowshoes are great on the flat in deep powder with a fair load on. I have a pair of Faber Hybrids too, but I struggle with them (the bindings). I have the MSR Denali Classics, unfortunately I cannot find the add on tails for them so they are really only good on well trod trails or icy sections (great). The MSR were/are used by military so they must be good. All the best, Chris

I've been snowshoeing since around 73. I only have 6 pair of snowshoes at the moment . I like my 11×56 Ojibwe shoes the best for where I live. But I would Really like to get a pair built that are 7' long by 11" wide . traditional shoes. With a high toe and around 30" of shoe in front of the toe of my boot. In Interior Alaska we get lots of dry powder snow. Too many shoes have too short a toe which lends itself to the tips of the shoes noseing down. Which leads to doing a face plant in the snow. Which is actually dangerous. But I do have and use mountaineering shoes, tailed bearpaws, USGI Magnesium shoes. Both with the issue length tails and with shortened tails. And another couple pair I don't remember.

Do you know what we call snowshoes in Tennessee? Give up? Kindling... or...those weird looking mesh things in Uncle Bud's closet...or...wishful thinking.
