I like that the engineer doesn't mumble on the whistle, sounding the signals with clarity as the rulebook requires. He even uses Long-Short and three Short correctly!

Exquisite beauty and videography. The snow falling from the tree branches … beautiful. The plaintive whistle as she chugs through the snow … no sweeter sound. Nothing better.

There is something magical about a steam locomotive puffing smoke and steam into the cold winter air with snow all around. Great video!

As impressive as the visuals are, the sound is equally important. Never scrimp on steam train sound. Go for the best !!

Respect(!!) on getting out and shooting in such conditions! No cosy cab ride for you! And your knowledge of where to set up led to some really nice angles and locations. Great work!!! Love the timing of 476's mournful whistle at 3:34 , the vehicles coming up to the road crossing 6:24 and snow falling off the branch at 7:43! A really terrific production all round!! Thanks for sharing this!

We did this trip a few years ago, great scenery... Sit in the presidential car, last 2 tables (seats 11-14) for cocktails and easy in/out to outdoor platform, no obstructed view off the back...

Both my grandfathers had a love affair with the steam engine. Both born in the late 1800s. I must do this Durango/ Silverton someday. 2nd gen, I'm here in Colorado to this day, and likely to the end of my life. Perhaps in winter, when it's not inundated...

I was reading a Rio Grande Southern book when it mentioned a "Priest's Flanger " on engine 42. Originally a Denver and Rio Grande Class 70 2-8-0. When I did a Google search on "Priest's Flanger" to find out how one worked it brought up your amazing video. But I still have the question : Has anyone ever heard of a Priest's flanger, and how does it work?

What are the pieces of hardware on the roofs of the railcars? Been on the DSNG several times but this is the first time I've noticed them. Looks like some sort of antenna.
