Only days ago the transport secretary was telling us about his plans for the abolition of Private vehicle transport and stated there would be " no new improvements". With the introduction of Clean air Zones in Tayside the A9 new dual carriageway will be tolled at it's starting point.

I have no affinity with Fergus Ewing, the SNP or government, but I do like the way Ewing speaks. I am old enough to remember his mother in her hey day and am pleased he has inherited her ability to tell things as they are, plus her occasional humorous remarks. I am concerned at the apparent opposite ability (lack thereof) of the Government front bench. Can anyone confirm they are all actually as useless as they appear to be? As others have commented, they seem unable to speak without reading, often with difficulty, from a paper or screen in front of them.

This was Jan 2019. It’s now Jan 2023. This section of the road is still at the “preparation” stage. The programme started with a Strategic Review in 2013 which lasted until 2018. There was 80 miles of road to be built. It is arduous and difficult terrain but that should have been considered when the timetable was drafted. There are eleven section, each their own project with procurement etc. There’s a pre-approved list of contractors to accelerate the process. As of today, two of the eleven sections are completed totalling just over 10 miles. The official webpage still says the completion date is 2025.

Fergus is a rare breed of politician, an honourable man in the job for the right reasons and keen to represent his constituents even if it does mean breaking ranks with his party line. Well done! To be clear, the dualling of the A9 between Perth and Inverness was a 2011 manifesto commitment by the SNP who at the same time pledged to dual the A96 by 2030. So we are TWELVE years in and to date only 11 miles of dualling work completed on the A9 since 2011 - less than 1 mile per year and those being the low hanging fruit of easy sections. At this rate, dualling will be complete in 2092!! Work on the A96 has not started and until recently the project was described as "permanently postponed "! There is circa 100 miles to complete there in 7 years so I am guessing Fergus will be buying another hat. No mention at all of the A82 and of course no ferries. This is deception and failure on a colossal scale.
