A sad reality but when I last was in an Oregon Rock Club in 2007, The fact that members were +55, but more like +70, and no youngsters in attendence made me realize that Rockhounding, Lapidary were not a thing of interest with kids. My first thoughts like many other things in life, was that many of these skills were in fact, a dying skill. So many very skilled individuals as Senior's were taking their highly refined skills to their grave. I thought about it for hours and like so many other trades brought to bare, will exist no more very soon. Really a sad reality for us that love the hobby, and those young in heart who will never appreciate it!

Always fun to see things under the lights! Hobbies ebb and flow. Hopefully as more people enjoy Rock hounding there will be many great options again. Thanks Jared.

The market is definitely driven by the consumer base.

Hey, old rockhound here. When you were at a loss for words, trying to describe the rocks... (keep in mind that I am a child of the 60s and prone to saying socially and/or politically awkward things)... Those clumps of rocks, we used to call them "or-geez". Had to play with the spelling there🤭

I toured HPL as well… it was amazing. They do on-line sales and classes. And will have some classrooms soon. Hi tech diamond has had great customer service. i bought a 6” and a 10” saw from them. Had issues with the 10” and ended up returning it. I got full credit and they paid for shipping too. I applied my credit in purchasing a 14” saw from HPL.

Can't wait to see some of those thunder eggs after being cut! I have seen a few from more than one location in Utah, and I don't mean from Dugway. They're out there.

Well, looks like it opens more doors for another start-up to gain a customer base and a great opportunity for someone to step it up. I won't say who I think fits the role here but....

It's always fun hanging out with you and talking shop! We all learn so much. I can't say I'm real surprised either, about cutting edge supply. They had some decent deals on some things, mostly rough rock, and then charged a lot on other things like blades and tools and machines! But I guess it didn't help them much! That rock you showed, are they really thundereggs? They look more than interesting! That blue chalcedony looks fantastic! And that blue was not due to the tindel effect either! I can't wait to see you cut into some of the rock you've found so far! Some of those big agates too! Heck, you are going to have to dedicate a full episode to cutting rock! And that's not a bad thing either! Thanks for the information and OMG that lapidary journal is huge! And us, so sure we are so technologically advanced then why is there only one company out there making saws? Good gravy! What has this world come to? Thanks Jared! Always a great way to spend part of my Saturday!

Yeah, it's a real bummer to see companies act like this, they could have been so good. They are really thundereggs but it seems like, as far as I can tell so far, they are not great but it does give me some ideas on where I can find some great things. Can you imagine getting this in the mail? It's a freaking book!

There are some small manufacturers in Australia that are making nice equipment but no good for the American market due to the wrong voltage, 230v here. It's more like a side hustle than the main focus. Anecdotally it seems that demand has been dropping for lapidary equipment possibly due to the perceived high cost. But looking at your research the pricing has pretty much stayed the same over the decades. Note: due to the exchange rate you nearly double the price in $NZ for anything purchased in the States then add that price for shipping, nah I can't afford that. It's cheaper to fly to Australia and bring a cab machine back in ones luggage and get a holiday at the same time for us here in NZ.

I can only wish that someone in the UK made lapidary equipment. As far as I know we have to get it it shipped from the US and shipping costs make it a no-go

Nothing wrong with buying from dealers, you get things cheaper than full retail that way, and can order multiple brands of things at once. Just have to read the writing on the wall - check reviews before ordering. CES had been getting thrashed for almost 2 years in many places. Overall, "new" concepts will be rare because the basic designs of lapidary tools are solid and proven and there isn't THAT much to innovate.

Cutting Edge Supply reminds me that the same people can torture rockhounds for decades by starting new crap companies. Maybe he is now gone for good. MK made me a substantial return payment just a few weeks before they went broke.I know their workers had been very unhappy with working conditions for a long time. Rebuilt saws may be the way to go for a while at least. I just bought a sweet rebuilt and love it.

Yeah I found out in Jan 2024. I ordered 4 Silver bracelets to put cabachons in for christmas on 12/01/2023, I have never received my money back or the bracelets as of today 8/19/2024. I have to report them to the FTC. I did buy my Diamond Pacific Gem maker in early 2023, thank goodness I got the machine, cause that was like $2200.00, if my mom hadn't left 3000.00 when she passed I couldn't have purchased it.

Yes I agree and why don't we have machines from other countries flooding the market as we do with everything else??

I will never buy from Diamond pacific again. I bought the mini sonic and in 3 months the hopper wore a hole. They blamed me and refused to replace. They also are hard to get in touch with. Highland park also has poor customer service in my opinion
