I think the biggest reason why your videos are so successful besides how skilled you are is genuinely how great of a person you seem to be. Forever a fan man. I’ve never seen anyother KZbinr(I’m sure they’re out there) who is so appreciative of comments and even the smallest package.

I do, but I've watched so may sporadically through your history, I wish I could easily just get a list of ones I haven't watched yet. Not a huge deal, I just want to be lazy rather than have to dig through the history looking for ones that I haven't finished.

Just a tip you may try sometime Adam … years ago while restoring a few firearms I resorted to warming my parts under a stream of hot water from the kitchen tap where I could be sure to warm the parts to 135 - 140 degrees but not too hot. Wipe the parts dry immediately and apply the solution. Parts turned a beautiful blue/black almost immediately. Applied a little Vaseline as lube and protectant and they're still gorgeous after all this years. Love your videos and thanks for doing them.

I think now I am going to go out to the shop and give an old Blue Point handle I have used for 40 years a good go over. Love that handle. It is in reg use so it will be a quick bit of lovin. What a great box of goodies. The welds are immaculate. Very nice custom box for sure.I get my stainless tig rod from my local radio shop. They trim the antennas about a foot and save them for anyone that wants them. A very high quality stainless. This is a great tribute to a fine handle you will most likely use for the rest of your days bud. It's beautiful !

Adam, love your videos and your enthusiasm for restoring older tools. Hope that your back to top form after your procedure.' I have used a Caswell product for cold Black Oxide finish on iron and steel. It comes as a liquid concentrate. I do like the way that the Brownell paste worked on the tap handle. When I have the part blackened, I then seal it with their penetrating sealer. "Caswell Penetrating Sealer is used after applying a black oxide coating onto steel or iron parts. It imparts a slightly oily feel to the parts, which displaces moisture and prevents rust. After sealing, dip or brush the parts with the sealer and allow to contact the part for 1-5 minutes. After sealing, shake off excess and allow to dry."

Adam, Love ya man and hope you are healing rapidly. One thing about cold bluing NEVER dip old brush, swab or anything in your main supply! It weakens it a lot. Better to pour what you want into a small vessel and work from it keeping your main supply fresh. You have taught me so much over the years I just wanted to share that with you hopefully it did not come across as a troll.
@Abom796 жыл бұрын
Thanks 👍🏻

HAHA ear to ear smile.... Abom79 replied to me =) also brother throw some gun oil on it, let it set an hour and wipe it off. The bluing is basically controlled oxidation and the oil will get into the pores and prevent red rust.

One thing to know about bluing agents is that you should avoid rubbing it, as this results in streaks. It should go on in smooth, straight passes and then left alone. I've cold and hot blued many a rifle barrel and action in my day and the best results are always had when you agitate the bluing agent as little as possible once it's on the surface. This avoids rubbing away the oxides that have already formed, creating streaks, as I stated before.

I picked up a tap wrench probably 30 years ago, a Wiley and Russel #6 lightning. Doing a quick search discovered that they predate Greenfield, merging with Wells brother to become Greenfield tap and Die in 1912. So my tap wrench is over 106 years old :-) A little battered with age but still nice and shiney and no rust.

Nice work as usual, Adam! I use cold blue from Brownell's quite a bit. I've found that small parts are easier to dip in the liquid (you can buy it in bulk), while the cream version works well with larger parts that make dipping impractical for the home shop.

A trick to help get a deeper black with the Oxpho Blue is to dip the steel wool in the fluid and rub out your part. It transfers some of the oxides from the wool onto the part.

Hey, that would make a nice Kleenex box for someone. Great job on the bluing. I've got a couple of old muzzle loaders that might look good with that finish. I think they actually browned the barrels on them originally. Good to see you at the bench Adam, Greg.
@smithjones19066 жыл бұрын
Wow that does look really nice, must be a great product. I've got some older firearms that could probably use it, but I've always been apprehensive because I hear it diminishes their value. My 1946 Remington 550-1 is literally bare metal by the safety though, I've just been keeping it horrifically oiled to prevent rust. Same story with a 1952 Ruger I've got. Yes, I like "older" firearms!

That Brownells cold blue is the best on the market. About $10 a bottle. I like the paste because it stays wet. Many a gun I've restored with it. You have to oil the bluing afterwords. Best use a good gun oil. Don't use WD40 on the bluing.
@2008koss6 жыл бұрын
great tip, thank you, I order it tomorrow...!
@ecleveland16 жыл бұрын
Be sure and apply a good coat of oil to all the newly blued surfaces. You may need to reapply oil for a few days to so it soaks into the pores of the metal. If you don't the newly blued part will rust rather quickly.
@brianwalk1086 жыл бұрын
Glad you posted this. I thought the blue would prevent rust, I was also going to ask about the non-blued peices, figured theyd be the parts to rust. just oil everything, eh?
@ecleveland16 жыл бұрын
Yes, oil everything inside and out. Blueing is "basically" a form of rust, there is a difference but not worth getting into for this application, and the chemicals are very acidic. Iron Oxide will form on the newly blued surface if not protected with a good rust preventive oil coating.
