Love the tool restoration videos, Adam. My favorite inch mic is a Starret from the 20s. Found it at a yard sale for $1. It was crusty, rusty, and neglected. It caught my eye because the thumbwheel was ebony. I'd never seen one. Brought it home, took it apart and soaked the metal parts in carb cleaner. The next day I used 0000 steel wool and light oil to clean it up. Only then could I see the Starret markings. Put it back together, calibrated it, and use it daily now. It just feels good in the hand. Here's the punch line... The lady at the garage sale said, and I quote, "I didn't think anyone would pay $1 for that rusty old C clamp.". Oh, the humanity! Thanks for another great video!

Hey Adam myself and a couple of other have recently had some issues with Evaporust on spring steel. For me it dissolved a piece out of my Mamod Steam Train restoration (vid on my channel) but more interesting was the damage done to some Starrett spring calumets, the top spring was made brittle and broke unexpectedly! We’ve figured this to be due to the slight differences in spring steel, so please use it sparingly around any tools with spring steel in them!
@Abom796 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tips on that. I have not used it on anything delicate like precision tools yet, only normal hand tools.

The black stuff left on the objects is super fine metallic iron, not iron oxide. The chelating compounds in the ER remove the iron from the iron oxide, then release the metallic iron. It actually chemically decomposes the iron oxide. Since the chelating compounds act catalyticly, that's why you can re use the ER until it turns completely black. ... running the ER through a coffee filter can help a bit to extend the life, although not much.

Oh I can absolutely appreciate that. A heirloom item special enough to hand down through your family perhaps. And with tools such a big part of your life its expected that you'd like to own a piece of history of your trade. It just surprises me that for some of the simpler tools so little has changed in such a long time. I've still got a few of my grandfathers old tools from the WW2 era, I might not use them much but I certainly still treasure them.

Hey Adam, love your videos man.. Just a quick suggestion.. The large C-clamp you soaked in Evaporust that didn't evaporate as well.. It's due to the soak being water based.. So you must remove any oil/grease/wax from the surface prior to soaking, otherwise it pushes the solution off the part and doesn't allow proper contact to the surface.. Mineral Spirits/Diesel/Gasoline/Hexanes, all work fine.. Cheers
