Do you carry a small framed revolver? Here are some of my thoughts and Carry considerations when it comes to using a J Frame or comparable sized revolver for self defense. Holster and belt options can make Carrying a smaller revolver easier and harder to do. Make sure you pick the right gear.

These small J-Frame style revolvers are completely relevant for personal defense. When you consider close quarters fighting, a revolver is by far the best firearm to have on you. If you have one of the top dog semi auto concealed carry pistols and you pull that out and make a contact shot on someone attacking you, that is touching you, you will get one shot at best before it malfunctions and in many cases you won't even get that one shot off because the contact is pushing your slide out of battery. Then consider clothing getting caught in the slide or it failing to cycle correctly if you do happen to get one shot off. All of these issues are NON ISSUES for a J-Frame revolver! That little guy will shoot every time and you can get all 5 rounds off while pressing it against the shitbag trying to kill you in rapid succession. Remember the 3 3's of a CCW encounter.....3 feet, 3 round, 3 seconds....that's the actual statistics of nearly all CCW encounters!

Just got my first gun after having lived in the United States for some 20 years. I'm originally from Holland and always had the Dutch mindset ingrained in me. Dutch don't carry. Over time I changed my mind. Sent off for my naturalization 2 weeks ago and went and got a S&W 642. Your comment about the 3 3's played a large part in that decision. Very well put and thank you from a grateful LEGAL immigrant!

I have found people who quote the “rule” of 3 3s use that rule to not shoot past 3 yards. I caution against using any absolutes based off of my own experience. I would rather practice and train for the absolute worst case scenario and then be tested easier. What do I mean? Practice creating distance, drawing under stress, drawing during an actual force on force scenario, and pushing the distance of my shooting ability while moving. Force on force classes normally eliminate a lot of the myths and ego wars out there. Everyone thinks they will get to their firearm in a fight and few do without training and practicing for it. Also revolvers are great but these non realistic scenarios of a semiautomatic firearm failing in the time you need it most is not as likely as many people claim. Also with the proper training and practice creating distance or shooting from retention will actually prove to be more beneficial than attempting to “press” it into someone.

@@shootingitwiththesarge Spot on! I’ve carried only auto’s through all of my careers and you are correct, not a single time did my semi auto fail to operate. I only use the 3 3’s when opening up people’s minds about the reality of “most” real world encounters when discussing self defense situations. Most people also don’t really consider revolvers and their advantages. Opening up the minds of the many millions of people who suddenly decided to purchase a firearm during this past year is something that is needed. They all need to seek out good instruction, from someone who teaches with the same mindset you’ve mentioned. I couldn’t believe the response I got once I opened up my instruction to private lessons, as a lot of these folks I’m talking about are apprehensive to take a group class. Keep up the great work Sarge!

Keep It Simple Stupid is still the best principle for functional machinery of all types. Reliability is inversely proportional to parts count. OF COURSE revolvers are relevant. I have setteled on Pachmayers and problem solved. I also carry a full sized 1911 in .45 also in Concealment express IWB and Pachmayer grips. For many years, I carried a full size, Sig 226 on my hip with my 638 as a pocket backup. As I got older, carrying such a beast got a little old. I retired my 226 and now keep it as my go-to for home and shove a 20 round mag into it and slip a light onto it. I ended up converting to the 638 as my primary on my hip and a LCP Max with a 12 round mag in my pocket. I don't feel weighted down anymore. In fact, I don't feel anything on my hip or in my pocket. They are both so light weight. Five on my hip and twelve in my pocket. New York reload I guess is what people call it?

Planning on getting something like the 642 or the 638 with the shrouded hammer as well. I also carry a Colt Detective Special I acquired recently even though it is 25+ years old if I want 6 rounds and SA/DA with a little more weight and a full 2" barrel in an OWB Thumb Break DeSantis. @@shootingitwiththesarge I have had it over 10 years and take it to the range regularly. Most of the time I shoot .38 Spl +P and usually carry Hornady 110 gr Critical Defense +P, though also have carried it with Speed Gold Dot Short Barrel +P, and Federal HST 129 gr. I do make sure periodically I shoot .357 Magnum self defense loads like the same Hornady just so I remember how it feels in case I ever had to use and without any gloves. Otherwise any extended (say 20 rounds + of .357 I shoot with fingerless gloves to avoid punishing myself. If you try to stack the trigger on the Ruger it can on occasion "skip"" a round, so it is important to pull through it decisively. That is jut my experience, however I would check with others who have owned it as well. I really like it. I'll look at the Craft Holster. Thx for your video. I think one has to be careful not to have a too narrow-minded view of what gun ownership and shooting is about. Certainly, self-defense is important. Perhaps very important in the somewhat unusual circumstance of having to use a handgun to fight off a violent attacker. However, given that there are many other enjoyable purposes for firearms and shooting, a person may find a revolver has substantial advantages. I have both types of handguns, and I can tell you that, for most purposes, I much prefer a revolver. The main reason? I handload and cast my own bullets. The last thing I want to do is have to search all over for fired cases after a shooting session so that I can recycle them into fresh ammo. Revolvers are excellent also for accuracy since many have adjustable sights, and for that reason are excellent hunting tools. They are also an excellent tool for developing loads for various purposes, which greatly benefits from handloading. A perfect example is the 10 mm round. I have 10 mm semi-autos and a Ruger Match Champion revolver in 10 mm. I use my Ruger far more than my Glock 20 because it offers me the most options for enjoyment of my shooting interests, and doesn't waste my time and money on trying to find fired cases that my semi-autos throw all over the environment. So, I guess you could actually say that a revolver pays for itself in a way. Every time I load up a box of 50 rounds of ammo, I've just saved myself upwards of $35-40 depending. About 20 boxes of reloads and I basically got my revolver for almost free. ;-)

I have had three clients use their hand guns in PERSONAL defense. All 3 are alive. All 3 ended the threat. All three used only 1 round. Personal defense is just that an attack on your person. Personal defense is 3 shots or less at 3ft or less in less in 3 seconds So far 100% Proven by my clients. All 3 were LUCKY. NONE of them used retention fire. All 3 were within arms reach. All 3 used pistols. All three now use revolvers and PRACTICE RETENTION FIRE RELIGIOUSLY. I use a semi auto revolvers for PERSONAL defense. If the first round fails? I pull the trigger again and roll in a fresh round. From 1 of the other (SIX CHAMBERS) Semiautomatically. I DONT use a ONE CHAMBER 1 in the pipe, it better work the first time everytime, one at a time it better cycle from retention fire pistol for personal defense. I have shot IDPA and seen dud rounds, limp wrist jams, short stroke Jams from friction during retention and clothing caught in the action causing stoppages. You may not agree with me? That revolvers are t the BEST personal defense weapons but you're WRONG. I do have weapons in my vehicle for community service duty. Don't bother arguing with me I will NOT be moved. You're welcome. This was free.

I used to pay attention to what the ww2, Korea, and name vets were carrying. Most of them also worked for local PD/SO also. 38S,357,45acp were their common go to and revolvers were the most common. Go ahead ask some retired cop what he/she carrie's. 9 out 10 are likely packing a j frame Smith they carried as a backup during their career.

@@shootingitwiththesarge Thanks for a super quick response! I’ve seen $477 online, but then ya gotta pay for the FFL to transfer, and pay taxes. My brother has one that his buddy is trying to sell for $400 and there’s no sales taxes on a private sale, and no fee to transfer for private parties in my state, so sounds like the price ain’t far off. Thanks again for the info!
