There’s a saying in the DnD community: “No DnD is better than bad DnD.” This situation is a prime example of why this saying exists. Shitty DM is shitty and dissuades new players from experiencing a game that many enjoy and cherish because they decide to abuse their power.

This kinda highlights what bothers me most about this whole situation: if anything, as much as I hate to admit it, he successfully introduced people to D&D. There are so many predators and abusers in the community that honestly it's just not worth it as a hobby if you can't form a game composed 100% exclusively of people you already completely trust, and even then you have to be willing to completely drop it if that changes even slightly. Maybe it's just me being depressed but idk, if I could do it all again I don't know if I'd get into TTRPGs.

@@softreyna Honestly, as long as you keep in mind that not every groups is going to be good and you are prepared to leave a game if need be you can absolutely have a fun game a make a lot of friends through D&D! I'm going to get started DMing my 2nd campaign for a bunch of people that I have met while just looking for a group. But yeah, if you have trouble saying no or being confrontational it's better to only play with people you know or at least with someone you trust.

@@thotslayer9914 In a nutshell, Arcadum was running D&D games, streaming them on Twitch, and trying to cheat on his wife with as many of his female players as he could, playing off their sympathies and guilt tripping them into performing sexual favors for him. Goblins was great. I'd call it a good example of a DM letting his players go off the rails. Thinking about the Astral Academy. Like, here's the obvious good guys that all the other groups are working with and they spend an entire session haggling the leader for upfront payment. Dunno if I should talk about the big off the rails example lest I spoil it for someone. They didn't take the obvious/intended path and Brett went out of his way to work it in. @@psycho728 So... for all the OTHER fudging Arcadum apparently got caught doing (people found out his "deep notes" were an empty laptop document he stared at while thinking), he should have fudged the situation to give them a better situation if it really was bad luck. This might leave a bad taste in some GM's mouths, but for a game that is PUBLICLY BROADCAST, it is inappropriate to run things completely by the whims of fate. If the party TPKs, that's a VERY unsatisfying ending for listeners, and that is a very real chance if you don't at least tailor some things down for the consideration that those players will be actively trying to be entertaining WHILE thinking of strategy.

It’s a retrospect thing and way to much reading into it but when I listened to Snuffy talk about this last night I couldn’t help but feel that they were purposely left so far in the dark and screwed with that way they’d have to rely on Arcadum helping them and teaching them privately. Especially when she brought up that like a thousand other times he got mad at them for asking someone else for help and tried guilt tripping them about it. Maybe not to the point of manipulation like some of the other girls but maybe so he could feed his ego of being like “oh I taught them this game they’re here now because of me” later on down the line once they understood the game better.
@FFXfever
@FFXfever 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think this is an issue. Sometimes, you just wanna see how much the players understand, and how much the players is able to improvise without knowing the full mechanics. After all, too much handling on a new player and you'll start making them have expectations of how the game supposed to be played, and they might not find creative solutions, like breaking the ice underneath the creature. Imo, the only complaint I have about that fight is that it had too many ways of going wrong, which it did, but, D&D is like that. I think Arcadum's god complex does indeed affect his games, and perhaps he does have the agenda of making the girls rely on him, but the decision itself isn't that bad, and his encounter designs are usually pretty good. Edit: NEVERTHEFUCKMIND, I paused right before the section where she talked about it. Arcadum is fucked up. It's one thing to say "dices can be cruel," but totally different thing to be "you fucked up, this should be an easy fight." Fuck everything I just said.

@@kylesinnett2479 I agree. Also when I rewatched the ep. I noticed that when he described the outside of the mists there were tons of roars in all directions. Whereas there was just one roar in the cave. And since they were in the dark about the whole world of verum they (understandably) took their chances with the one in the cave. Unfortunately, it almost ended in a tpk, all because he'd rather them be indebted to him for teaching them the game than, actually teaching them, and letting them get info from outside sources.

To be honest, I've never watched Arcadum streams before this campaign. But watching session 0 I couldn't stop thinking "is this guy really just throwing tons of information at them just like that on stream?". I'm glad she talked a bit about that too, because that was not beginner friendly AT ALL. For my first time playing, the DM pointed me to some resourses so I could read a bit about races and classes and stuff through the week, and showed me the basic mechanics before the first game. Must've been super stressing for them to peruse through all the classes and races while on stream, with all the people watching and then not having any way to learn more about stuff. I don't know why people say he's a "beginner friendly" DM. He threw them into the world without giving any example on combat mechanics and them bam! He threw a Dark Souls boss at them and said "I'm not gonna help you with this, that's up to you". Like... That's one way to make people hate DnD... He didn't give a shit about the players, he just wanted to tell his story.

The age old saying, "I'm not mad, I'm disappointed". Like, he tells them how busy he is and sometimes forgets things. Fine, okay, the DM can't be expected to remember every little detail of the players' characters on top of the story, npcs, enemies, etc, the players should be expected to remember their own characters. Getting pissy because the players took the initiative to get outside help to take some of the stress off him because he wasn't the center of attention? That's inexcusable. Like one of my sticklers about gatekeeping in D&D is "do the newcomers want to learn?" If yes, then that's fantastic, who cares who they learn from, what matters most is they have that drive to learn. I also respect and understand Snuffy's mentality that she doesn't want to kick a man when he's down after already being rightfully dragged through the mud. The guy's homeless, lost his job and favorite hobby, thrown away decades of works, lost the respect of his friends and loved ones, all from his wrong doings being brought to light. Anything more people think he deserves is just people wanting to be cruel because it's now socially acceptable.

Yeah, I was overall disappointed because I was just randomly on twitter when I saw it go down and went like "welp he fucked up" then went to bed with that Thanos meme in mind. Like he had everything and basically lit on fire because of his own lack of control. He couldn't slow down or stop, this is something I've noticed with some people only "The Wall" will make them stop and reflect on their actions. I really haven't played DND myself yet I been interested for years so I do my own research and how messy his universe was like bruh. Even as a writer I wouldn't have made it this complex without clear pages upon pages of info anybody can look up with just a google search. I always had a feeling Snuffy's good people like after all this he had his punishment, he's been exiled. He may not be national news worthy yet he should be able to grow, learn and be well. I’d say whether the issue someone is causing is ongoing or not would determine whether the kind of anger the faceless crowd of the public has towards them should be cold or hot, but the intensity is pretty much a natural result. The guy can’t screw with anyone anymore, so no need to keep raking over the coals, but there’s no reason to treat him gently either. Guy keeps trying to reach out for sympathy, I have no problem with anyone slapping him down. No shame at all.

It’s okay to want to just poke things with a stick in dnd. It made me happy that she drank the potion, just because she was curious and wanted to mess around. It also made me mad that he then turned that chaos grab into a huge character moment that would tie her into a bunch of other commitments. @@themocaw Personally, I think it entirely depends on the group; Session 0s tend to help with that. If you have veteran players at your new table, throwing them into the deep end where death is a real threat is not an issue; Assuming the table is fine with such a game. If you have any new or fresh players, a session 0.5 to help the group shape up and get them more comfortable with the game is useful as well. So all in all, I'd say that you, as a DM, should talk with your players about the game about to be ran. Also, for me personally, without the risk of massive failure, the achievements the group pulls off are not even remotely as statisfying.

D&D should never be this kind of stress and bullshit, and from watching the beginning of their campaign I would be so honored to just have players that were as enthusiastic as these girls are. EDIT: Hearing that they needed to cope and *_DRINK_* before games is... horrifying! As a DM, honestly most of the time I'm the designated therapist, helping people with stuff even outside of the game! If you're the DM and you find out one of your players was that stressed, you make an excuse that there's an emergency and you cancel the game so you can help them or get them help! I think I would _cry_ from happiness if I found out my players went and got a _D&D tutor._ How could you get mad at that? Honestly, I feel like I should trust my instincts better. As soon as he was showing off fanart of himself, there were a few red flags. EDIT EDIT: Did they not have their character sheets? No access to information? What in the nine hells?! 7:28 I LOVE that Snuffy brought this up. I hate that when someone gets caught for something fucked, the majority reaction it to wish all the worlds evils on that person. His insecurity and obsession with his likability manifested in the worst way. The man needed professional help years sooner, clearly saw himself above that, and so he payed the price. He threw away all his relationships (his worst fear), his current DnD sessions and his ability to play for the foreseeable future. Lost his job, kicked out of his home. Complete and utter rock bottom, and people see fit to kick that sort of person down even further. It depends on the sort of person you are, I don't think Arcadum's the type personally, but with his insecurities, self-hate, losing his ability to do the thing he's passionate about, his relationships, I wouldn't be surprised if he decided to end it. I feel as if those people kicking him down would either be dumbfounded, is if they couldn't see such an obvious turn of events, or would relish the fact, and that shit is fucking scary to me. How someone can just flip switch, making memes about "dungeon dad" one day, and wishing for that person to kill themselves the next. 15:00 This is a clear example of why he's not a good DM. It doesn't matter how good you are with stories or the mechanics if this is how you behave. First, he makes it clear that he doesn't have time to answer all their questions and walk them through everything. Then he gets pissed that they found someone, who does have team, to help them out. I mean, I think Arcadum genuinely is insecure. He's someone who wants to be revered but has little actual faith in himself and is so sensitive that he baits and fishes for reassurance and compliments. That in and of itself is not malicious behavior, though it is certainly not good. The malicious part is how he demands so much empathy, but reacts so inappropriately when he doesn't get the answer he wants and fails to show any real empathy to others despite how much he expects from others. I think the only way to deal with someone like that is just to cut him off from your empathy early. Just make it clear that you'll hang out with him, but you're not someone to confide in and you're not looking for a friend. He really just needs a good therapist. Maybe if he got one, he could actually be a good person. Personally, though, after hearing the melodramatic way he talks in those leaked calls, I'm surprised anyone would put up with him in the first place. He talks like a teenager who learns how to speak and behave from an anime.

I said it back then, and I will repeat it now, the Mistwalker fight was bullshit. I loved Arcadums bigger boss fights, they were always a highlight, but the group had literally no combat experience except for a cinematic fight, in which they one shot all the enemies anyway. Sure, he said they did not have to fight that big thing, but as a DM myself, I know, when I put a big evil creature in a dungeon, especially when it is the only one that they could even see at all, the party is going to fight it. I agree the rolls were unlucky too, but they were way in over their heads from the start. They knew nothing about actions, bonus actions and so forth. Literally bad game design. The DM holds all the cards in his hand and he fucked them over be it on purpose or not. Players having no clue what their characters even do was a repeating pattern in most of Arcadums games anyways, which the players are at fault too, but he spent no time explaining the basics to most of his players even in character creation. Learning by doing can be fine and some people prefer that, but it should be a slow build up and not what he did to Otikatas Curse. I could rant on more things that angered me about his DM style, but eh, doesnt matter anymore. His RP and Worldbuilding was high tier though, shame he is such a piece of human garbage.

But at higher levels when you want to cast a lot of different spells or any other spell that requires concentration its not that good anymore. Also your cantrips will outdamage Witchbolt, but that goes for any low level dmg spell if you dont upcast it, although Witchbolt has free damage after the first hit and you can always miss with a fire bolt for example.

Edit: the more I watch the more I want to comment, the mistwalker fight went horribly wrong. Like he really didn't need to do the ice shattering and there being a deep lake underneathe. If it's a cave, in the mountains and is there frozen. It should have just been icy terrain him saying it shattered caused a buncha bullshit to happen. Haruka nearly died because the ice shattered, Nyanners nearly died because the DM forgot she was part of a water clan, everything went to shit from there. The monster should have just died if it's weak to ice. Why is it that the monster is susceptible to ice, but somehow is able to jump out of DEEP freezing water, when a chilling blast was enough to cause him to freeze over. I remember Zito's campaign with TFS at the table where a huge armored enemy who was probably a boss enemy came up and they just managed to defeat him in one turn due to teamwork, and Zito was like "That was sick." I think Arcadum didn't want his big "Impossible to defeat" monster to be easily defeated by a huge weakness. Also why didn't a martial check be like, "Oh hey the monster is weak to the cold." It was totally Arcadum's fault that whole fight. I think the weak to the cold thing was good ol, DM fudging where he was like, "Ok well actually he's weak to ice guys!" after everyone is nearly dead. Totally arcadum's fault not your guys fault and I hate that during a stream people were like, "How do you feel about the girls going to someone else to learn the rules." and he was like, "I don't really care about that! As long as they are having fun and learning the rules that's all that matters." then you saying he got mad... ugh...

Honestly, Tomoe was one of my favs out of the group and hearing that because of what happened, she isn’t really interested in playing D&D too much anymore kinda saddens me and makes me more angry towards Arcadum for it. She was thrown into the wolves and then left to rot essentially and that wasn’t cool. I hope that playing with Brett will change her mind about it… 😢😢😢

I've had my own experiences with Arcadum that looking back in retrospect it all kinda makes sense. I was in season 1 of Callous Row and there were many times things would happen that I'd just brush off as "stereotypical big-ish streamer narcissism" but yeah.. seeing others stories really made the puzzle pieces fit together that the guy was mentally unstable and manipulative as fuck.

I have been in a streamed game for about 2 years now (though we only have a small following, the KZbin channel has less then 100 subs). When we started streaming the game I was so worried about what the fans would think of my character and what I could do to entertain them, but after 2 years of streaming the game I gotta say this, All that matters is your enjoyment. If you are having fun, the people watching will be having fun, same goes for if your not having fun. People watch D&D because they want to see a bunch of friends enjoying a amazing game together, they aren't looking for the same kind of entertainment and focus that you will see from gaming Videos or Vlogs, Just do whatever your character would do in a given situation and don't worry about how the fans will react. Sadly there are some DMs that only stream their games because they think it will make them famous and boost their Ego like Arcadum, they think they are the next Matt Mercer or some shit and will be able to do what he does and make money doing something they think is easy, and it doesn't work out that way. If a DM keeps saying they are a great DM and bragging about their own skills, jump ship and find a new DM, it is the party that determines whether or not a DM is doing good, whether or not they are having fun, Ego kills D&D. From what I saw of Arcadum's games, his players are there to tell his story, that he planned out ahead of time, and it needs to go as he planned or bad things happen, like with that mist walker fight, he obviously planned for specific things to happen and because those things didn't happen, you all died. I enjoyed the VTuber games, but I never enjoyed Arcadum, you guys made it entertaining but I always got the toxic DM feels from him, and its good to hear I was correct about those feelings, after dealing with so many like him or worse in the past. I'm glad that you aren't letting this bad experience with Arcadum ruin your enjoyment of D&D and your wanting to continue playing with your friends, cause that's what D&D is all about, having fun with your friends.

It's incredibly unfortunate that this incident might be the thing that kills DnD for some people. I've seen that sentiment more than once around the flaming remnants of the Verum Discord over this past week and a bit. Despite the fact that Arcadum was my break in to DnD, I can see that Verum was a tiny fraction of what DnD is. There's more DnD out there than a 1,000 Verums or Arcadums could ever provide.

Like regardless of if the person done something despicable or not, what or who exactly are you helping by insulting and wishing death upon that person?? I don't understand how people can be happy about and celebrate anyone's misery. I don't care how horrible that person... - And Arcadum wasn't that _horrible/evil_ - He mostly had mental issues, and was clearly not happy for years, which only makes it worse: He needs healing, not bashing... - But, he lives in society, among humans, and that's what life is like - and what he did? Pretty damn "human like" too, if you ask me... (as in, negative)
