My first experience with toxic fandoms was when I was about seven, way back in the mid-90s. The original Star Wars trilogy had just been re-released on VHS and everyone was raving about it, especially on the playgrounds of schools across the country. Like many kids that age, I'd both watched and loved them, but the enjoyment was soured when I told my classmates that Return of the Jedi was my favourite. All of a sudden, I was a laughing stock by everyone else, who evidently had all agreed that Empire was the better choice. And that kind of "let's gang up on the one guy in the group who thinks different to the rest of us" is something I've unfortunately had to see (either done to others or be on the receiving end myself) in every other fandom I've been a part of 😟

I feel online communities tend to either OVERHYPE or just plain HATE something without having that nuanced discussion about what worked and didn't work. It happened with "Velma" and got so bad that people compared it to "Puss in Boots; The Last Wish" even though the two productions couldn't be any different other than being animated and one actually caring for the medium and the other just being trash. This leads to series and movies being so overhyped people hate it out of principle, or so overhated you wonder what was there that caused so much vitriol. The cartoon/animation community is notorious for this we we seemingly normalized having a hyperbolic mindset that accepts having toxic tendencies. You CAN call out a show's weaknesses and strengths without having to have wish death upon those that created it. It's like people forget that at the end of the day we are all just grown-ass adults fighting over cartoons. We should learn to hype responsibly and accept that not everyone will love or hate the same thing and THAT'S OK.

Steven Universe came out at around the same time that I started questioning my gender, sexuality, and my place in the world among other things. It really helped me learn how to accept myself for who I was and how to recognize when I needed to ask for help from others. I figured out pretty quickly that fusions were a metaphor/symbol for relationships/love being expressed in a relationship and it made me feel so much more comfortable and happy with the show once I figured that out. The fusions are not limited to characters who are romantically attached to each other, they also happen to show different kinds of love. When Steven and Greg fused in the movie, it was a show of familial love. When Ruby and Sapphire fuse, it's a show of romantic love. When Steven fused with himself after the White Diamond showdown, it was a show of self love. So on and so forth. But it also shows things like when relationships go bad or how it's normal for some people to just not want to be in a relationship while also expressing that the love is still there, even if it's not being expressed in the conventional way. Peridot, for example, has shown interest in fusion before (asking questions, running tests, etc.) but doesn't wish to be fused with anyone else. She has also shown her interest in romantic relationships (shipping charts and stuff) but she actively avoids becoming involved in anything like that. And it's perfectly fine! Nobody gets mad at Peridot for not wanting to fuse and instead they all respect her decision and let her express her care and love for others in her way. Lapis Lazuli and Jasper are the prime examples of a toxic/abusive/unhealthy relationship because neither of them actually cared for each other and instead had separate goals that directly opposed each other. Jasper wanted Lapis' strength in order to kill Steven, but Lapis wanted to have someone to take her anger out on. Who better than the gem that's actively trying to kill the kid who just freed her from her 1000 year imprisonment in the mirror? They both attached to each other because they both wanted to cause pain and suffering, but that is not what a relationship or a fusion should be based on. After Lapis and Jasper unfused and they went their separate ways, Lapis expressed that she never wanted to fuse with anyone ever again because of how badly things went with Jasper. At first, she even refused to develop any sort of connection to anyone other than Steven. Lapis was aggressive towards everyone who wasn't Steven because she was afraid of what would happen if she got attached again. At the end of the story though, Lapis is now friends with the other Crystal Gems and she has been learning from them that it's okay to love and trust others who have earned it from you. There's so much more that I could go on about but I'm sick and I'm running g out of brain cells. The point I'm trying to make is that the entire show, every single character present, every theme, every episode, the very essence of the cartoon Steven Universe is healing. Healing wounds, physical and mental. Healing relationships. Healing past traumas and misconceptions. Healing from mistakes, both your own and others. The very soul of the show is healing in every sense of the word.

The Velma show plotline, forced integration thrown into the marketing (honestly I get cynical when the marketing prioritizes diversity because it is way too often hot air and clout chasing), and jokes are groan worthy but I had the same idea about the animation being not bad. Like, the show is bad, but the animation would be a big refresh if there wasn't so much other stuff to suffer through. For Steven Universe, you didn't know Garnet was a couple of non-binary lesbians (or at least the closest they could get at the time by making them technically rocks with she/her and they/them pronouns and just that being their whole species) until like 50 episodes in. But the further along they got the more the show managed to cover new, very important topics and even troll the censoring squads in other parts of the world with Ruby in a dress and Sapphire in a suit. All while never once announcing it as the main idea of the show, because the main ideas if the show were overcoming trauma and a deconstruction of love and loss, as well as growing up. That and learning that someone you build yourself around wasn't a great person until near the end of their life, and that leaving a place of abuse still has an aftermath on new people they meet and even those after they pass away.

This is where I give out a bit of criticism for this video. wanted to add just because of Velma has good animating doesn’t automatically mean that it’s a good show I’ve watched many cartoons that have astonishing animation yet Hot garbage writing.. good animation doesn’t efficient if a show is good or not:/ also the thing that you added where you feel like some people like to review in an echo room (basically meaning that they don’t want their opinions to be contradicted) kind of contradicts your own claims because you refuse to actually show face value to why these opinions pop up in the first place which kind of gives off a bit of biased energy. also I can tell that you don’t actually watch the reviews you just assume that they’re being ignorant so I watched some of the “ignorant” reviews that you showed in your video and they actually give a good reasons why they don’t like the show.

As someone that has not seen steven universe but seen countless shows that get praised while running but then when they end bad get dumped on and all its pros forgotten. The ending is the most crucial part. You end bad or mid thats all you get remembered for. Lost had a spectacular first season for example and season 2 & 3 had some stellar stuff. But it ended in manys eyes unsatisfactory and now its just dogged on for rest of its life. Game of thrones (i havent seen) suffered same. it ended so bad it just lost the entire water cooler talk it had. i dont even wanna start it cause of how bad it ends. Before i watched the sopranos, all i knew about was its infamous ending. everything else it accomplished mostly got buried in the cultural zeitgeist. Ending is the most vital.

Thank you for this. My friend thinks that su is a bad show just because on Twitter ppl hate it so much. SU is my life, it helped me so, so much and is still helping. I would reccomend this show to anyone ❤
@funloop Жыл бұрын
I think what contributed to the growing hate toward SU was the fact that it went on hiatus' for weeks/months at a time only to come back for 3-4 episodes to drop either a filler Towne episode or a controversial episode (Pink Diamond reveal) and leave us hanging for another few months. I suspect the time spent away from the show gave people a bit too much time to think.

Given how long it takes for most animated shows to make episodes, it's probably likely those season 2 episodes were already in development long before the public backlash got big (and maybe even before season 1 aired since some studios will occasionally greenlit multiple seasons of a show).

I think SMG4 has a way of dealing with the toxic side of his fanbase and it's shown in his new movie "It's Gotta Be Perfect". It shows off what he's thinking and feeling and has heavy psychological horror elements mirroring "Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem". He's teaching empathy by instilling his own fear into others. The weird thing is I thought *I* was the only one with this idea, I once said "I'll freeze their hearts with terror and feast on their screams" I'll probably still do it. (I swear I have a lighter side.) Please watch the short film and tell me what you think. Have I missed something? Let me know.

9:17 Content creators make those video essays picking apart shows of movies for the $$$ (they don't care about the actual content). Hate is a very powerful emotion and getting people riled up and angry is a proven strategy for getting those views and actually getting a viewer to sit through an entire video essay (viewer retention) even if it's a form of media the viewer has no interest in. Not saying it's right, but it works very well and worked historically. It's the same tactic politicians use, news channels use, leaders use to wage war- find an "enemy" and manufacture outrage to get what you want.

It's so refreshing to meet someone who sees things through the same lens as I do. As in, acknowledges the flaws of a show but also moves past them and values the good things more. People really should be more.. idk, optimistic in their approach to life, it saddens me to see how many folks are filled with vitriol and are ready to mercilessly thrash everything they don't like. Hey, chill out maybe? There is no such thing as a perfect show/album/book etc, because a) it is all purely subjective, b) perfection is something to strive for, but also something that should never be achieved, for if it were achieved once, other creators simply wouldn't be able to compete with it and we would not get any more content. (sorry for mangled grammar, it's 6 a.m. and I'm hungover) As for the unsubstantuated hatred towards an undeniable masterpiece, I, as a long-time hardcore Homestuck fan, shall bring up exactly this thing, Homestuck. It's a long-ass (about 8.000 pages, if I recall correctly) webcomic with one of, if not the most complex, complicated and mind-blowing plots of all time, with about a hundred characters which of whom has a clear purpose for the plot, and many of whom have compelling stories and character arcs. Of course, if you take something as complex as this, it would never escape its fair share of controversy. Is this character handled well or badly, was this subplot necessary or not, oh no, I expected this character to do that instead of this, oh no my OTP is ruined etc. Keep in mind, Homestuck fandom would never be so infamous among the Internet for its toxicity if it wasn't comprised of stupid spiteful teenagers, and stupid spiteful teenagers are rarely able to accept and understand a piece of art as a whole, to really analyze what they read and move past the percieved flaws. So yeah. There was a shit ton of toxicity, heated debates, hatred and haters, death threats from one middle-schooler to another etc. It was only natural that, when other people on the Internet looked at this shitshow, they were quickly to judge and criticize the comic itself even though they had never read it. Yes, Homestuck is not perfect, it's far from it, because no thing this complex can be perfect; it's like a gemstone - the bigger it is, the more flaws it will unavoidably have. But it is nonetheless a ground-breaking (nay, medium-breaking) multi-faceted masterpiece with hundreds of layers, and it takes years of re-reading and analyzing just to get a gist of it. And understanding how genius it is despite its many flaws, learning to look *past* them is what made it possible for me to see other pieces of art in the way I do, appreciating them and accepting them as a whole. Webcomics such as Tragedy of Fortuna or 17776, shows like Steven Universe or Infinity Train, visual novels such as Ace Attorney are ground-breaking in their own ways, they bring up moral and philosophic questions, they make you think and re-value things in your life and how you look at it, and this alone should be enough to forgive them some underexecuted character arcs here and there.

FINALLY,,, a take I can actually agree with.. I Can accept that the show does have it’s flaws, but when it came to writing it was like fighting tooth and nail so Steven universe wasn’t allowed to have the ending it wanted due to being canceled and given a short amount of episodes to wrap up the story. I know it’s not the satisfying ending we all wished it would be, but maybe things would have been different if Rebecca could actually write the ending she probably intended.

I think a lot of the hate on Steven universe comes from those of us who watched it from the beginning. We were so excited and loved the show and loved everything that it was building up for, we were very emotionally invested and were not knowing what to expect. And one thing that the show did a really great job of is making us really hate diamonds. That’s why a lot of us did not like the redemption arc. Because they made literal space Nazis and then told everyone that they have to forgive them. Then you re-watch the show and see them only ever punish people who have been abused in a striking out because they have been hurt but only ever forgive people who just spout hateful rhetoric. That’s where I think a lot of the justified hatred for the show comes from. It’s not the show isn’t good, it’s that it is so good and yet it has underlying themes of forgiving genocidal Nazis and people who are bigots and giving them a second chance instead of giving those who need a second chance. It’s like getting a beautiful and delicious dessert, and it taste great but then having an awful aftertaste that makes you violently ill later.
@christopherbennett5858 Жыл бұрын
Yeah. It was a mess. It just felt like someone took the playground philosophy of “forgive and forget” and actually tried to apply it to things like genocide, Coercion and straight up abuse. Which was either seen as malice or, by most people, insane naivety from the creators who bought and sold it so eagerly. Rise of the TMNT also had a similar issue with the character of Baron Draxum. However, unlike Steven Universe, the one good thing was that they could actually defeat him. But dear lord, his presence in season 2 dragged him and Mikey down Big Time.

If they were redeemed they would appear more in fuute and most of the characters would be happy to see them, thats not the case.

But Velma is hate-baiting. So, you can't fault the fandoms to shit on everything about Velma even if those criticisms are unwarranted. The animation is decent and stood out for an adult animation, but it's not amazing enough that it's gonna change people's opinion about it. When it's blended with very shit writings and directions, everybody will crap on it as well. It's like the cheerleader and fratboy effect in Gumball when the characters surround themselves with pretty people, they all look pretty. Surround the animation with ugly shitty everything else, the animation looks ugly.

What I don't get is that people saying that the Diamonds got redemption arced when they haven't! They didn't change because they wanted to, they changed so that Steven, aka to them Pink Diamond, they are trying their absolute best to keep Steven from leaving them like Pink did. They finally have "Pink" back and they don't wanna lose that, so they do everything in their power to keep him with them. TL;DR Diamonds weren't redeemed but instead forced to chill out with the threat of Steven leaving them like Pink did
