This song came out in 1979 and got very limited air play but it was beautiful and I remembered it. So when I had my first dance with my new bride less than 2 years later in 1981 this song played during our first dance. That was 42 years ago and we're still together.

I love Dan Fogelbergs music, in this song, I loved the book metaphor he used in this song to measure time. He did write this song himself, he did so while he was on vacation in Maui. It hit the number 2 spot on the top 100 Billboard for a week in February 1980. Thanks!!!

Had the privilege of seeing him in concert twice. One was him with his whole band and the other was a purely acoustic concert. No electronic instruments....just him with an acoustic guitar and a piano. Check out the song Netherlands if you want to hear a soaring song.

One of my favorite artists. Dan Fogelberg was such a great folk rock singer songwriter & storyteller. His biggest hit was "Longer" in 1979. He said he wrote this song while vacationing in Maui, lounging in a hammock one night & looking up at the stars. He had so many good songs including "Nexus", "The Reach", "Hard To Say", "Leader Of The Band" & "Run For The Roses". We lost him much too soon in 2007.

Another fave, Sketches. Have most of his albums & just as many of his piano music. I’m 70, Native Coloradan. I was so lucky to see him in person many times. Can visualize him sitting at the piano just feet away from me in Vail. Listening while in the Rocky mountains was magical. That voice, his songwriting, & oh so handsome. Gone much too soon. RIP Dan. This was Dan's biggest chart hit. I would suggest some other songs of his for your consideration - "There's a Place in the World For a Gambler" - "The Reach" and "Leader of the Band." The last one inspired by his father.

this turned out to be his biggest hit. We lost Dan to prostate cancer but he left behind lots of great music. Next try "Only The Heart May Know" a duet with the incredible Emmylou Harris.

Hey, Harri, love your reactions. If you loved Dan's voice on this one you must check more of his early recordings. My suggestions: "There's A Place In The World For A Gambler," "Part Of The Plan," "To The Morning," "Looking For A Lady" and "Wysteria." These are all from his first two albums, "Home Free" and "Souvenirs"...both excellent in their entirety.
