Portal 1 was CHUCK FULL of creative ways to finish the test chambers. Portal 2 is SO LINEAR it often punishes you to try to solve the puzzles except exactly the one way it wants you to.

I think it was because they were focused more on the story rather than a creative ways to finish the puzzles. Creating a puzzle is hard enough, but creating multiple ways to solve the same puzzles a little bit harder, especially when you're mostly focused on the story aspects and over even some puzzle chambers that were not even playable because they were simply a device to forward the story like that one chamber where you and Wheatley escape it to the back rooms of the facility. That chamber is completely unbeatable because it's simply a device to forward the story sorry for the ramble

This could be a plausible headcanon considering GLaD's taunts about Chell not being a good person throughout the second half of the game and the evidence regarding Doug choosing Chell to be moved up to the top of the list for testing specifically because of her unusually stubborn tenacity. It seems entirely in character for her to figure out the intended solution and then stubbornly insist on carving her own pathway forward instead, much to GLaD's internal annoyance.

By getting one of the cubes into the next room they made it impossible to solve. The devs anticipated players managing to do that so they made it so the door will open on its own when it happens to prevent people from soft-locking the game.
