The Cyan/Saiyajin Arc is better. It had a pampered Gohan as a kid feeling abandoned and then turning that abandonment into Survival.The way Survival theme works in the arc was fascinating especially when it was working through the most privileged ones in Gohan and Vegita since they never had work so hard.

Cell not just gamble with gohan with living his life on the edge but he got worst out of everyone... Goku gambled living though his son developing this "sport father trait" ...Trunks had to gamble with traveling through time, And Vegita was definitely a slave off the leash to his ego after being one to freeza when he allowed cell to fill his ego up.

Fun fact, the _“eyeliner”_ that SSJ4 has bears a striking similarity with how Orangutans evolved to have colored eyelids to help protect their eyes from sunlight.

Dragon Ball is without a doubt one of the most disrespected shows out there. So many people talk shit about it and completely dismiss the fact that their favorite shonen wouldn't exist without it. I get that influence doesn't equate to quality, but you at least have to respect Dragon Ball. This is probably an odd comparison, but it's like talking shit about Beethoven, Mozart or Bach even though they are some of the most influential and revolutionary musicians of all time. I'm also convinced that the majority of those who disrespect Dragon Ball haven't even read/watched it all the way through. To this day, I still think some of the greatest fights in the medium can be found in the Dragon Ball manga (not the anime because of pacing)

Vegeta was born a prince, a future king. But then his entire planet got destroyed. He was defeated by a lower class saiyan. Then he had to team up with those low class saiyans and humans to beat the tyrant who destroyed his planet. He fell in love with a woman from earth, married her and had kids with her and at the end, he decided to sacrifice himself, literally smiled at the face of death to protect the people he loved. From a selfish self centered prince to a caring human. I think this is what we call character development.

Furthermore, in Super (the one called trash only rivaled with GT but in different aspects) Vegeta grows to be a mentor, and in the manga protects the people of New Namek, all while finding new powers and growing out of the two mentalities of “being better than Goku” and “Frieza destroyed my home world so I’ll have beef with him forever, especially considering the Tournament of Survival”. Vegeta is the most developed character and the last main character whose skill was in fighting too. The rest are important but don’t take fighting roles (Bulma, Beerus/Whis, Mr. Satan), or have turned into supporting characters that don’t get many moments to remind us that they once had great skills. There is the exception of the Universe Survival Arc, where even Muten Roshi did something in either version, or the beginning of the Galactic Prisoners Arc, where even Yamcha joined the fray in a lesser battle with people stronger than Saibamen. Then of course, there is the Survivor arc, which might use Piccolo a lot based on the fact that they talked about the Dragon Balls once again. But they still prove the rule; outside of those stories where the focus is specifically on them, they don’t get much. It is not to say they don’t evolve: Videl in particular turned from a person chasing Gohan’s secrets to a person who can support Gohan by usage of force and cutting words (which isn’t much as I am describing it, but is impressive in the Barry Kahn arc), but it still is clearly a side story and the main draw was Gohan fighting against Barry Kahn’s manipulations and then Watagash-enhanced Barry Kahn. Meaning that the last time Videl was relevant, she was a supporting character in a side story that did little fighting. I will admit that Videl at least battered up Barry Kahn with her words more than Gohan and it shows their love as well. Krillin also had great development in learning to gain a passion for fighting again especially since he was threatened to drop to Yamcha’s level of strength. However, he was the first person to die for Universe 7 in the Universe Survival Arc, and it didn’t take that long either. Characters, after being shunted, can evolve for the better but are rarely used majorly, or in ways indicating they have maximized what they have learned (although if they have, that would bring them in line with the MCU). Still, this is one major flaw that hasn’t been corrected, and unlike many other complaints about Dragon Ball is an actual flaw that can’t be ignored or is an interpretation issue.

I truly can’t thank you enough for showing some love for this series. For some reason its become cool nowadays to hate on dragon ball which is absolutely bs considering this series is what led shonen jump to all the success it sees today and some of the most well written manga to date like One piece and hxh. People also blindly ignore all of the amazing writing that went into dragon ball and I agree that its not perfect by any means but it has so many loveable and well written characters like I’m not kidding when i say Vegeta’s development is more organic then so many modern shonen we see today. It happened over the course of years, not just a few weeks like many series think takes for a character to truly change. saying dbz is bad for lacking intellectual complexity is like criticizing abstract art for lacking realism. it makes a specific kind of art and its qualities the standard for what art "should" be, and anything that lacks these qualities is "bad." by this logic, an anatomically accurate, photorealistic self portrait is well drawn. meanwhile, a picasso painting, with no sense of space, strange colors and uneven proportions, is poorly drawn. a hammer is just a screwdriver that's too big and blunt. a grill is just an industrial furnace that isn't hot enough. a spoon is just a shitty fork, an opaque wall is just a shitty window, macaroni and cheese is just shitty carbonara. dragon ball, a teen-targeted action/adventure series about fighting, is just a badly written adult drama serial. people don't think it matters what it does well because it doesn't do the specific things that make "good" media. tl;dr not everything has to be watchmen to be enjoyable

Definitely a GOAT anime in my opinion. It's moments were too iconic and great. People don't understand that Dragon Ball wasn't intended to be extremely complex with its lore etc. It's not what the GOAT Toriyama had in mind. I liked everything about Dragon Ball, the toriyama art style (GODLY), the animation, the arcs, the villains (especially Cell), the protagonists etc. GOAT anime. :)Also Toriyama is a great writer if you really think about it, I think people overlook this part of him.. he wrote some of the greatest things in anime history from the beginning of Dragon Ball to the Cell Saga. Eg) Cell being the embodiment of the previous generation of the Z fighters except Gohan. He does put thought into his stories.

i think an issue with db is while it does kill off characters it also jumps the shark so much bringing them back through these deus ex machina balls thats the series namesake that it ruins any stakes and drama and tension/emotions...if characters stayed dead and the balls were a one time thing or never able to return that would be awesome like they ended gt with and tried with goku jr. kinda in that ova....and to end gt with...a new generation with no balls is the way to go with a future series...obviously...we can power scale backwards and have a new cast to meet and grow with that can change even cause their new....what a cpncept..why was super not that?..i will never know...

After the cell saga toriyamas heart really wasn’t in it anymore. I guess he was disappointed that the fans didn’t accept gohan as the main protagonist like he originally wanted. It’s like gohan is his biggest disappointment because he is constantly mistreated.

dragonball honestly helped me get through really bad times so i'll always be grateful for what it is. is it the best anime? no did other animes take some concepts of anime and improve on them? of course but dbz literally helped me get through depression as a kid and motivated me and is such a comfort show to watch for me so i'll always be thankful for it existence. its my fave anime soley cause ots the pne show i constantly rewatch and continue to enjoy (hell i introduced my younger sibling to it and we bonded over it, its special to me for those memories. not that its deeply written)

Dragon Ball is basically what gave shounen creators their inspiration and pretty much 95% of the anime community who born in 90s was influenced by it so we all need to remember where it came from as that time it was the masterpiece among it's peers and surely by today's standard it won't stand much, but seeing some clowns and crayon eaters hating on it is pure blasphemy as these goat nuggets of human beings think "ohh dbz is shit and it's all scream and stuff" obviously you are seeing this now but it had a cultural impact in the west at it's time and it was popular when we didn't have twitter or any social media, hell even in india nothing was there but dragon ball was always there, like i owned dbz stuff before knowing it's dbz, even my non-weeb friends know about dragon ball so if we talk about breaking the boundries across continents, it's dragon ball. It was a GOAT and Now it's a fucking Legend so just don't fuckin disrespect as you have a wider variety of anime and remember all your creators looked up to toriyama so disrespecting him was equivalent to disrespecting your favs. I get it fights and all story line is pretty meh(aka super except black arc) dbz was lit tho most arcs are lit, but please no disrespect. Literally. Let's look at what most people consider a deep and well written anime, MHA. half of deku's fights is him screaming his lungs out while yelling "SMAASSH" and hitting his opponents. If you want to make something look bad, you can absolutely do it, oversimplifieng things makes them look bad.

The main problem with this, is that in dbz, this happens in litterally every arc, it's always the same. Every time a new transformation withtout real explanation about its fonctionnement or something, that's not dramatic but still. And i think it's because there is no explanation about the tranformations (unlike the gear in one piece for example) that things such as dbs exists with tranformations and powerscaling that makes no sense). Sure, it happens also in other mangas, but not in EVERY arc. For example, one piece (spoil in case you haven't read it don't read any further) the gear 2nd and the gear 4th were both like that. But these were only 2 moments out of dozens of arcs. And that's just an example, even if it happens in other very good mangas it's just a few times and not everytime. Don't get me wrong, i really like the db manga and think it's very enjoyable but on that point i can't really understand why some people call it a masterpiece (beside of nostalgie), but hey at the end of the day everyone likes what he wants.

@@zimerguez_5920 Nah the only time it happened without explanation in Dragon Ball Z is when Goku turned ssj3 ( which you can still figure out if you rewatch the end of Goku vs Majin Vegeta).Ssj1 was not an asspull as they were hyping it up since the begining of namek saga and ssj2 was first achieved by Gohan and we all know Gohan was hinted as a power house since the begining of Z. Also Dragon Ball Super is dirt with 3 or 4 gems ( badass moments) in it. And I think Tournament of Power Arc is bad but even ultra instinct was bieng hinted in early Super episodes.

These are my exact thoughts. Most people who hate on the series nowadays are mainly New Gen fans who saw a few episodes of Super and judged the entire series on such. Most people I talk to can't even provide a solid argument on why the series and trash and with those that provide the stupidest of reasons, god forbid you have a reasonable argument to why Dragon Ball is a great series (pre Super & GT). Arigato, well said. Also, Super Eyepatch Wolf created an immense video detailing why DB became such a phenomenon. The series will always have a special place in my heart, and I think that the Saiyan/Namek/Frieza saga is one of the best overarching stories in anime; from the introduction of the Saiyans and Goku's true heritage, all the way up to the rebirth of the legendary SS and defeat of a being who has long tormented the galaxy and near wiped out Goku's people. We had heard so much about Frieza as this terrifying force, but also from a far more personal perspective through Vegeta. It felt very cathartic when Goku finally put him down because he felt like such an overwhelming obstacle that had a profound impact on the galaxy, but mostly on Vegeta - who we see gradually broken - and Goku's lost family. The build up to the SS transformation, and the moment itself, was also so incredibly executed; and I'll never forget the hype and emotions surrounding it.

Therefore having loved something when you was younger shouldn't disable you to acknowledge years after, that it might not be the greatest piece of art out there.
