Small and cool funfact: Since the anime just recalled the title of the show with episode 08, I will try to explain to people who may not be familiar with Japanese why it is such a big deal, just a little FYI if anyone's interested. The Japanese title for this show is "Sousou no Frieren" which is also the title of episode 08. As you can see there is a short description "Sousou no" in front of our protagonist's name. Sousou (葬送) is a word that is formed by combining 2 characters each with their own meaning, 葬 "to bury" and 送 "to send off". Usually, the word has a sad and grieving nuance, but in some contexts, it also means "to kill/to end". At first, most people assumed that the title is like that because Frieren outlives all her friends, so she "sees them off" one by one. But at this point in the story, the demon reveals that it is actually a title given to her by demons because she has "sent so many demons to their deaths". People were SHOOK when this double meaning was revealed in the manga, it was just so cool lol I saw that English subtitles translated it into "Frieren the slayer", while still badass, it just doesn't fully show how the author played with words in the title, and I just think it's a pity that some people will not be able to appreciate it due to stuff lost in translation. IMO experiencing the realization that the title was not as simple as I thought was one of the highlights when reading the manga. But translation is hard, I totally get that. I'm assuming a lot of people already know this, but just in case, I wanted to create this post, because I really love this show and I'm so happy that the anime is getting so much attention. The anime is doing such a good job, and I look forward to it every week. Cheers. www.reddit.com/r/Frieren/comments/17ifamo/double_meaning_of_the_title_sousou_no_frieren/?rdt=44310

@@slowmotion3644 ö.ö np The only thing is, its just ONLY in this anime that they combine it with "to kill/to end" too. Would you talk with a japanese in some kind of context Souso > to kill/to end someone they wouldnt probably dont understand what do you want from them xD
@Andytlp9 ай бұрын
How was that not obvious. She kills any demon she meets. The aura scene made it pretty clear there is 0 tolerance policy for those freaks. As for the name not matching the translation exactly, that means very little. Slayer sounds cooler anyway. You get a slayer title after downing 10 thousand of x creature in some game. Lets just call sousou no frieren demon slayer and delete demon slayer anime from existence since we wont need that anymore.

Yeah, I saw the English title and was disappointed by the low res and unprofessional interpretation of her title.. Maybe something like “Frieren the buryer” would be bit more fitting The show is filled with hidden meanings that the author trust readers to discovery on their own.. this interaction is becoming rare.. unfortunately the English publisher took away the easter egg author left for the readers to find out..

In case it wanst clear: Demons are perfectly fine with the Zoltraak/Soul Track which is ordinary offensive magic. 80 years ago only Qual could use it. Then humans analyzed and learned it and fused it into their magic system so that every mage could use it as ordinary offensive magic. Then in response to that the demons also learned to deal with it. Just like Lügner said, demons overcame Zoltraak more than half a century ago. So at this point Zoltraak isnt a big deal to either demons or humans anymore. However Frieren specifically modified her Zoltraak in a way that it basically becomes a demon killing magic and also taught it like that to Fern. Thats why Lügner was suprised and asked Fern what this spell was, because Frierens and Ferns Zoltraak is completely different from the one that all other mages use
@홍준익-b4i9 ай бұрын
And that's how Qual died so easily with the very spell he invented, and also said "Frieren... my spell...!", he knew that she modified zoltraak in her own way to kill demons.

Fern knows how to motivate Frieren to wake up early 😂it's adorably hilarious how poor Stark is going along with it. Himmel wanting statues of them to be around so Frieren won't be alone after they're gone - such a beautiful scene, hits you right in the feels. Frieren's behaviour when she sees the demons is the perfect reminder of how different this anime is - she was always calm and collected, for the past 6 episodes but now, when she saw the demons, she instantly wanted to attack, in the middle of a populated town. The flashback to Himmel and his decision to try and reason with the demon while they stayed in that village was heartbreaking - seeing how Frieren knew exactly what would happen. It's actually refreshing for a change, to have things in black and white when it comes to villains (demons in this case). There's nothing ambiguous about them, they're monsters who prey on humans and they need to die. Excellent comparison with Hazbin Hotel, Magy. Demon nature is a complete 180 in this show, as compared to what you've seen in Hazbin Hotel. Draht played a really stupid game and won the appropiate stupid prize when he tried killing Frieren like that. She deleted him so fast! Brilliant scene - Frieren realizes how it looks like - she was alone with the guard in the cell, the guard is dead and the demon she killed desintegrated so everything would point to her killing the guard. The shows subverts expectations once again by portraying Graf Granat as an actually intelligent character, who figured out very fast that the demon killed the guard, not Frieren, based on how quickly Frieren allowed herself to be captured instead of killing the guards. Furthermore, the demons could've easily killed him but they kept him alive to actually try and achieve their goals of destroying the city, instead of quickly killing him and denying themselves the opportunity to find out how the defensive barrier can be disabled. The little confrontation between Stark and Fern against the 2 demons was epic and it really makes you wonder how it will end, such a good tease for future episodes! "Frieren the Slayer" - chills! What a monstrous foe she is for demon-kind and it paints her in such a different light. Thank you for the epic reaction ❤

Just a note "Sousou no Frieren" doesn't really mean "Frieren the Slayer". It's much colder than that. Sousous means "funeral". So the title of the show is Frieren's Funeral which of course is referencing all the funerals she must attend for lost friends. But in the case of the demons, it more accurately translates to "Frieren the Funeral-bringer" or "Frieren the Undertaker". A "slayer" implies there's a battle or a fight. When you meet an undertaker, there is no fight, you're already dead, they just put you in the ground.

There are no Japanese people who understand the title, ``Freelen's Funeral.'' 「葬送」(SOUSOU) This means "to bury and see off", and it is not wrong to say that Freelen is a "killer". However, that is Freelen's appearance from the demon side.From the perspective of the relationship between humans and freelen, ``SOUSOU'' has another meaning.An encounter between a nearly immortal elf and a mortal human. And because of the difference in the length of time they live, "SOUSOU" applies in the sense that only Freeren is left behind. I guess you could call me a “caretaker.” It's really interesting how demons and humans have completely different meanings. I'm not sure if I understood it because it was Google translated, but please use it as a reference if you like.

Why would viewers second guess Frieren’s opinion of Demons? So many reactors do this. She’s been alive for centuries. Do you really think this is the first time she’s seen Demons trying to play nice? Or is that viewers think Demons have stayed the same for millenia and picked exactly the last 30 years to radically change? It just so happened that us, viewers, get to see her being wrong after 5 seconds of meeting demons, despite her being an immortal elf. It would be stupendously bad writing if that were the case, so I don’t understand why viewers keep expecting it to be the case.

Because most animes don't have such black and white - good and evil concept. Before this they watched "Hazbin Hotel" and Laura's first anime was "Demon Slayer".

Many anime has demons that are morally grey or have tragic backstory. Most media nowadays don't have villians beinf pure evil so it's understandable that reactors will doubt Frieren judgment despite living as long as she has. Look at demon slayer.... with exception of few, the demons has tragic back stories. Frieren has done what hasn't been done for 2 decades, have demons be actual demons.

its important to note the particular words have multiple meanings regarding death, depending on the context they are used in. One is to kill/slay but it also refers to "caretaker/undertake". From a demon's perspective it means you're already dead when you meet her and she is just here to bury you. From a human's, its that she is a caretaker of the dead, in context she is someone who will carry on their memory and legacy long after they die. It makes for great japanese poetic wordplay/puns where the same word is applicable with every variation of its meaning.

The logical conclusion about elves here is that they have a desire to get a child with another elf or as long as its an elf to pass on their experiences, wisdom and such. At least that's what the theme seems to imply. The elves here are lack of romantic feelings and don't have reproductive desires but considering that Frieren grew up in an elf village they must feel some kind of desire to preserve their lineage. And the fact that she remembers the elf 400 yrs ago while talking about their race extinction means they still have a desire to populate.
