Oh, I wanted to share some music trivia with you guys relating to Shalamar. This groups was found and created by Soul Train creator and legend, Don Cornelius, and Dick Griffey (Soul Train's booking agent). It was initially supposed to be a disco-driven group, but then the direction of music changed and so the group became primarily an R&B and funk group. Band members Jody Watley, and Jeffrey Daniels were regular dancers on the Soul Train program before Cornelius chose and asked them to be a part of the group he was forming; for them to sing backup vocals to lead singer Gerald Brown, who left the group quickly and then was replaced by Howard Hewett (who sang the lead vocals in this song, "Second Time Around").

This 1979 song fit right in with the disco of the period, and Shalamar had a lot of additional hits through the early eighties in both the US and the UK. Their first hit, "Uptown Festival" from 1977, was a medley of sixties R&B hits set to a disco beat. "Take That to the Bank" (1978) and "Make That Move" (1980) are a couple of my favorites of theirs. That "pew! pew!" sound y'all have noted in a few late seventies disco songs started to be common after the first "Star Wars" movie debuted in 1977. I think it was supposed to sound like some space gun or something. Y'all should listen to Meco's hit 1977 disco version of the "Star Wars" theme. It may have been the first song to feature those "pew! pew!" sounds.

Like many in the early '80's I overlooked Shalamar. Took 'em for granted. Now I can see how good they were.

Wow RIP Robbie Robertson co founder and guitarist for The Band. Classic rockers are going away fast. Thanks to Jay and Amber their music and memories will be around a long time more. Maybe a tribute with The Band’s The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.

This was the JAM back in the day! And still a vibe! Positive, melodic and so danceable. They had several popular songs in late 1970s-early 80s. You should definitely check out a few more of their songs. I recommend in order: A Night To Remember, and For the Lover In You (slow jam), and Make that Move. Shalamar's main singers came from Soul Train as dancers, if I recall, so you see they're nice moves on display here in this video. I loved their sound--Howard Hewitt was a heck of a singer, and Jody Watley had a fantastic sounding voice that brightened every song she sang with them. She had some hits as a solo artist in the 1980s but I always thought her voice was actually better suited to the group dynamic in Shalamar.

Shalamar is comprised of Howard Hewett, Jody Watley and Jeffrey Daniel. They met when they were all three dancers on Soul Train and the host of Soul Train, Don Cornelius suggested they become an R&B group. They had several hits on the R&B charts throughout the early to mid 80's. The group would eventually split up due to creative differences in the late 80's. Howard Hewett went on to have a solo career with hits on the R&B charts. Jody Watley went on to have a solo career with hits on the R&B and Pop charts. Jeffrey Daniel went on to be a Choreographer and worked with stars such as Michael Jackson, L.L. Cool J, Baby Face, Paul McCartney, Sheena Easton and Vanessa Williams in the late 80's and throughout the 90's. Hit's by Shalamar, Howard Hewett and Jody Watley include: 1. A Night To Remember - Shalamar 2.This Is For The Lover In You - Shalamar 3. Make That Move - Shalamar 4. Dancing In The Sheets - Shalamar 5. Show Me - Howard Hewett 6. I'm For Real - Howard Hewett 7. Once Twice Three Times - Howard Hewett 8. Say Amen - Howard Hewett 9. Don't You Want Me - Jody Watley 10. Real Love - Jody Watley 11. Everything - Jody Watley 12. Some Kind Of Lover - Jody Watley 13. Friends - Jody Watley 14. Still A Thrill - Jody Watley

Howard Hewett was the lead singer before departing on to a successful solo career. He was by far one of the best love ballad singers ever, his vocals and the range of his voice literally was angelic, the voice and the lyrics was spellbinding. My top three songs I think you both would really like, "Once, Twice, Three Times', "I Wanna Know You", this song is the love song of all love songs, "Somewhere There's a Love". This song was the first time I herd Shalamar, This Is For The Lover In You.

Howard Hewett singing lead on this one. Background is Jody Watley and Jeffrey Daniel. Jody and Jeffrey started out as soul train dancers. Both Howard and Jody ended up having solo careers. Jody would be a great one to do for Female Friday (or maybe you already have). Her bigger hits are Looking for a New Love, Real Love, and Don't You Want Me. But she has a banger called Still a Thrill with an epic video to go with it. Howard Hewett has some great solo stuff such as, Show Me. Fun fact: Jeffrey Daniel is the one that taught Michael Jackson the moonwalk.
