Of all the crooners you haven't touched on yet, I'm glad you finally got to Johnny. "Chances Are" is an absolute classic you guys have to react to the next time you're in a crooner mood. You also need to do Tony Bennett's "I Left My Heart in San Francisco". Tony and Johnny might just be the only crooners from that are that's still alive! (Johnny is 86, Tony is 95.) So funny to watch this video, which was filmed in 1991. All those kids probably have kids of their own now!

Johnny Mathis has the perfect voice for Christmas music. When I was a kid, his first Christmas album (with a very young Mathis on the cover holding skis) was synonymous with the season for me. I have been writing to you for sometime about Johnny Mathis. He is a crooner and nobody has the timbre he did. His voice is so distinguished. In the 1950's and 60's we all slow danced to his songs "Misty" "Chances are" "It's not for me to say" "Wonderful, Wonderful" "What Will My Mary Say" " The Twelfth of Never". Any Christmas song he sings sounds like it's his alone. This song was written in 1951 by Meredith Willson, who is best known for the musical "The Music Man". Bing Crosby and Perry Como had popular recordings of this song as well. Love his unique voice.

Johnny Mathis was very popular in 50's and 60's especially. It's already been mentioned that Misty was a big hit for him. Wonderful Wonderful, was also beautiful. Chances Are is great. When I was a little kid growing up in Cincinnati in the 50's and 60's there was a daily TV show on at noon called The 50/50 Club with Ruth Lyons. She was a talented host, singer and songwriter and started a Christmas fund for hospitalized children. Her adopted daughter came down with cancer and while with her at the hospital she noticed how sad the kids were because they had no toys or activities to keep themselves occupied. She raised millions to purchase toys and other things for the kids. Anyway she would have Johnny on her show whenever he was in the area. They were very close friends and she wrote a song he recorded called Wasn't the Summer Short, didn't it Fly. Beautiful. His voice is so mellow. But there was a big stink when she hugged him or he kissed her hand, something stupid because he was black and she was white. She said she didn't care because he was her dear friend and if the viewers didn't like it they didn't have to watch the show. A lady ahead of her time.

This song was written in the early 50's, and I think Perry Como was the first to make it a hit back then. Countless people have recorded it over the years, but Johnny Mathis' recording wasn't until about the mid 80's.
