I had such a crush on Johnny Mathis. I thought he had the most beautiful voice. I would save my babysitting money and go up to our local variety store and buy the latest 45 to play on my little record player too. My Mom and Dad surprised me on my 16th birthday and took me to see him at the University of Berkeley. They really liked him too.

Yeah!! Johnny Mathis! He has said many times that he "just loves to sing". I've never seen or heard a lackluster performance by him. He has a true respect for what his voice can do and treats it the way any dedicated musician would treat the instrument they play. "Open Fire, Two Guitars" is one of the best albums ever recorded. Johnny Mathis began as a jazz singer in his late teens. Columbia signed him at 20 and recorded a jazz album that didn’t sell. Genius Mitch Miller had the notion to convert him to an easy listening artist.Mitch taught him how to adjust his style and the rest is history. JM has a trained instrument and has demonstrated the ability to virtually sing anything. Thank you for your detailed education, it’s always appreciated.

Thank you soooo much, Fil... I think people may not realize just the amount of range he has, and the overall " smoothness " he has is so unique, part of his appeal, as well as how he " mixes things up ", with the way he sings. I saw him perform at Caesars Palace, in Vegas... I believe it was 1995, maybe 1996 (it was a Birthday Gift) ... And it was supposedly one of the BEST shows he'd ever done.. so that made seeing him in person even more outstanding. ... Actually met him Backstage, and it was " kinda surreal", ..I'd been a huge fan of his since I was in Jr. High School. ...54 years ago. ( I'm one those women that love the Singers from the 40's, 50's and 60's.... I got made fun of ,but actually didn't care ,lol) .

The last concert I went to before the pandemic lockdowns was Johnny Mathis. He was 83, but he didn’t look it and he certainly didn’t sound it. Then, the first concert I went to after the pandemic settled down was-you guessed it-Johnny Mathis. Now as an 86 year old man, he didn’t look sprightly anymore, but his voice is still amazing. He did two roughly hour-long sets with a 30-40 minute break (I think it’s interesting that he uses his opening act as his intermission), and he was stunning. I was most impressed with his mic techniques. This man KNOWS how to use a microphone. Excellent video, Fil!

Johnny Mathis is known for his beautiful romantic ballads. He has a very unique velvet voice. His music has spanned over 6 decades. He had so many great hits such as "Wonderful! Wonderful!", "Chances Are", "It's Not for Me to Say", "The Twelfth Of Never", "Gina", "What Will Mary Say", "Misty" etc. He also did a couple of duets with Deniece Williams "Too Much, Too Little, Too Late" & "You're All I Need to Get By".

My 70+ year old mother often went to see him when possible. I took her to see him for her last time some years ago in KY. I didn't want to actually sit and listen so was thankful my daughter didn't mind. But, as I sat outside in the foyer, working on my laptop, I heard that man's voice so utterly clear and so tremendously beautiful that I was truly overwhelmed! It was such an incredible treat, one that I'll never forget.

THE Johnny Mathis "Merry Christmas" vinyl was a stable at our home from the second the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade was over until a few days after Christmas. I love every song on there, and loved to sing along, letting Johnny's voice mask my, um, deficiencies. Haha. Also, there was a skip at "May your days be...days be...days be...merry and bright!" We still sing it that way.

First I would like to say that Johnny Mathis is still with us. He is still on the road presenting and performing concerts. As he has matured, so has his voice. Several non musical terms I will use to describe his voice...magical, smooth, legendary, awesome,. At 63, I am probably on the older end of your subscribers. I just fell over this one. I LOVED Johnny Mathis (still do, but that isn't part of the story). That fact helped me connect with my Mom, who had great taste in music. We traded generational music and I got JM and Harry Belefonte out of the deal, among others. She got C,S&N and Jimmy Page's guitar (she loved classical guitar) among others. When I hear him now I'm reminded of later singers like Michael Stipe of REM... it's the emotion that shines through. :) Elvis and Sinatra were great, but they had followings - they were bandwagons that people could jump onto. To me Johnny Mathis is just a GREAT voice. Belated thanks for doing this!!

In the 1960s I was watching The Lennon Sisters Show (4 Singing sisters previously on the Lawrence Welk Show). They were preparing to sing a song and said they would have a guest performing with them. He was introduced as "Johnny One Note". "Johnny One Note " held one note throughout the Lennon Sisters song. I was floored! I discovered that he was Johnny Mathis. I have been to many of his live performances and enjoyed them tremendously.

Have you ever seen the video of Johnny Mathis called, Johnny Mathis , One Note? It’s a video of Johnny sustaining a single note for one minute and 28 seconds. It would be great if you could analyze that video as a follow up to this one. And maybe explain how Johnny can do this. I heard it was some type of breathing he does… circle breathing? Not sure what it’s called. Even if you don’t analyze Johnny Mathis One Note on your channel, it’s worth watching on your own. Pretty incredible to see. They say it is the longest singing note. Pretty frickin amazing to see him do this. He was opera trained. You’ve got to see this, Fil. And I would love it if you did an analysis of him performing this unbelievable physical human feat. The man’s vibrato is so unique and in total command of his voice. Seriously, i couldn’t give two hoots about those two other guys who supposedly had the more popular voices than him in the 20th century. The reality is that someday someone will be able to mimic their voices (if not already so) but nobody will ever be able to mimic Johnny’s vibrato.

I want to note how Mathis grabs the mic and leans back for the last note, even bending at the knee a bit- so many singers make the mistake of looking up with their neck, which constrains you, while Mathis draws his whole frame backward evenly, keeping the frame as open as possible. My father worked for RCA at 30 Rockerfeller Center ( before it became NBC), and he would always bring home the latest albums of performers, singers, orchestras, opera, everything. Have memories of this song because my dad was a big fan of Johnny Mathis. I also remember being in primary school and in my final year us kids were encouraged to bring in records on the last school day before Christmas, I'm talking 1977. His Greatest Hits album was on Billboard's Hot 100 for something like 10 years I think. It never left during that time. I saw him perform here in the Great Auditorium when he was in his 70's and he still sounded great.

I've greatly appreciated his talent since the sixties. What I can't figure out, is why I have never gotten around to getting any of his albums. Perhaps it was that where I heard his music, was as background music in elevators and stores, and on radio stations that I didn't like (for a variety of reasons). Thanks for doing this one. I think there are still plenty of artists you haven't covered, but, like the ones you have done, have/had amazing skill and talent; you should definitely keep this series going (unless you are getting sick of it, of course).

In my sowing wild seeds rock and roll days of the mid 1950's to early 1970's, between the ages of like 5 to early 20's, when rocking and rolling, teenage stuff really dominated. Johhny Mathis was really anything but, but the voice, the tremendous orchestrations, think it was Percy Faith, somebody like that. Wonderful Wonderful. It's Not for me to say, Chances are, etc etc. The atmosphere created, it just was mesmerizing!

Thanks for doing a JM video. I'm sure many have asked you to do this... including me. He is one of the truly great vocalists of the 20th (and 21st) century. The tone, the technique and the longevity are beyond compare. I'm a bit bias, as I've seen him perform perhaps 50+ times over the years, as well as watching him in the studio and rehearsing at his office. He is a phenomenon. And, on a personal note: I've known him for almost 50 years and I can tell those who love him that not only is he an amazing talent, he is one of the nicest and most genuine people one could ever meet. It has been a true privilege for me to have this friendship in my life. Hope that this channel decides to repeat and analyze another JM video in the future. BTW, John continues to give 3 or 4 concerts a month (only in the U.S. now) at the tender age of 87 and still sounds just like himself. This is a very good thing. WL
