Donna - Thank you for the followup. It's good to hear your results after following you for such a long time, as I did. I had rotator cuff surgery November 30, 2018. I read many articles and watched a lot of videos in preparation for the surgery and what I would be dealing with afterwards. Your progress videos were also VERY important in my recovery. Even though recovery can be quite different for each of us, it helped me immensely to learn about your experiences. Also extremely helpful were your messages of encouragement and perseverance. I sometimes re-watched "episodes" I'd already seen to boost my spirits and help me hang in for the next improvement milestones. Post-surgery, I suffered from frozen shoulder which made physical therapy extra challenging. Your encouragement helped in that regard, as well. Again, thank you very much for your videos! For the benefit of anyone else who may read this, here are the other things that helped me through my recovery. Prior to surgery, I focused on what would make recovery easier to handle one-handed. I got my hair cut shorter than I normally would. I cut my fingernails and toenails as short as possible. I bought sweatpants, oversized shirts, slip-on shoes and replaced my shoelaces with the curly, springy ones to be able to put my shoes on with one hand. I bought a comfortable, motorized recliner to sleep in. I bought the kind of combo toothpick/floss things that allowed me to floss my teeth with one hand. Here is a link to the type of shirts I bought. www.amazon.com/Uni-Sex-Shoulder-Surgery-Recovery-Discreet/dp/B07KSKLDZB/ref=sr_1_12?dchild=1&keywords=shoulder+surgery+shirts&qid=1589426924&sr=8-12 As I knew pain would be with me for quite awhile, I purchased some things others recommended for addressing it. For pain relief for when the "really good stuff" the doctor prescribed would run out, I bought Tylenol and Advil. I read of research that said the combination of 400 mg of ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) in combination with 1,000 mg of acetaminophen (Tylenol) is more effective than opiod medications (Oxicontin or Vicodin). Here is the site with the information. www.webmd.com/oral-health/news/20180425/advil-tylenol-better-than-opioids-for-dental-pain I tried this combination and it worked well for me - TRY AT YOUR OWN RISK. Later, as the pain was somewhat less, I took Traumeel tablets. I read about others having success with them. I found them to be less effective, but they were also certainly less in strength than the combination of the other two over-the-counter meds. Also, Traumeel was no longer available in the U.S. and had to be ordered from overseas. I think mine came from Romania. I also used ArnicareGel to rub onto the areas of pain in the joint. That pain relief gel is available at Target. It goes on cool, absorbs quickly and it relieved most of my pain. Finally, the one thing that helped me as much as anything else was the use of cold therapy. I purchased the Breg Polar Care Kodiak Cold Therapy Unit from Source Ortho, along with the shoulder pad attachment. www.sourceortho.net/breg-inc/ The machine can be left in place for hours which helped me sleep when I otherwise would not have been able. It was pretty quiet but I also wrapped it with blankets which made it very quiet. It is designed to use ice but then the ice melts and it's an extra hassle to deal with. Instead, I followed the advice of someone else and used frozen bottles of water. Four 500ml square bottles of Fuji Natural Artesian Water fit just right inside the machine. I bought eight bottles and kept four bottles frozen at all time, so I could switch out when the ones in the machine finally melted (they lasted several hours). I wrapped them with wash clothes before placing them inside the machine, so they couldn't rattle against the inside. Even after I no longer needed any kind of medication for my pain, the cold therapy machine was key to handling whatever pain that came along. It would have been very difficult without the cold therapy. The cost of all of these things definitely can add up, but the investment in pain management during the four months I slept in the chair and the many months of physical therapy that followed was worth it for me. One last thing - make sure you contact your insurance company before scheduling physical therapy to make sure what they will cover. I just assumed mine would cover, the same as they did the surgery. It turned out that they would cover it all if a plan was submitted before treatments began. Because I failed to do that I had to pay a $500 deductible. Thanks again, Donna, and best to all!

D R, thank you for this very detailed reply. It is in agreement with what I have recommended with using the combo of Tylenol and Advil, the importance of the ice machine and recovery, and using frozen water bottles instead of ice. The shape of the Fiji square water bottle is a great idea to use!. All of your post has great advice. I hope you are well!

I was 66 yrs. old, had a skiing accident , broke the acromion, tore the labrum and had full thickness tears. At 6mos. post surgery I got out to the ball field with a bucket of balls and started tossing the balls short of the pitchers mound to the backstop. Over the next few weeks I worked on increasing my distance and velocity till I could make a beeline throw from second to first. still had slight impingement in the shoulder but over the next year I would say I progressed to 99%. Three weeks ago I had another accident that resulted in two partial thickness tears in the other shoulder. Surgery uneventful. This time only in sling for 3 weeks. Same drill...don't sweat it!

Donna, thank you for your very helpful videos. I am 2-1/2 weeks out from surgery. Obviously, I’m on the front end of this journey. What a test of patience this is going to be. I started w/your 3-week post-op video. To be honest, one thing I noticed were your eyes and w/every subsequent video, your eyes seemed to get brighter and brighter. At this stage of basic virtual full immobility, that actually encouraged me. Slow and steady and deliberate. No doubt this will be one of the most difficult experiences of my life but I am wired to get through every step as it comes, one step at a time. One day I will be looking BACK on this experience. Your progress updates, practical advice, and, most importantly to me, your positive encouragement are most helpful. Thank you so much! Martha Johnson

@@funmakingmoneyify What a difference a week and a half makes! I have turned some kind of corner as I have basically ZERO pain and am having to be mindful of not overdoing it. I'll still be in the sling for two more weeks but have started taking my arm out and slowly, passively straightening it down by my side, per instruction of my physical therapist. Lord A-Mercy, it's tight but it is a HUGE psychological boost to be taking an actual action step on the long road to getting back to normal. Happy Day!

Great information for anyone dealing with a rotator cuff injury and surgery. I"m at my 6 week post op and just was given the green light to start active assisted pt. Your video has helped me understand the phases of rehab and to be patient with the complete process of the road to recovery. I like what you said about 2 steps forward 1 step back as the pain level from just starting active assisted has increased from only doing passive pt. Thanks for helping us along the journey and also for the encouragement we all need...Best wishes from KC.

Thanks for allowing me to take this journey with you. Not apples to apples but I have a tendon from tendon tear in the rotator cuff in my right shoulder and surgery is in 3 weeks. In 2013 I had a distal bicep tear (complete from the bone) in my left arm that never really recovered 100%. Strength got to about 85% and supination is a total nightmare. Both injuries are from heavy weight training wear and tear over many years with the rotator cuff injury coming from flat bench press. I am hopeful that by 24 weeks I am 90% + recovered especially since that would mark the beginning of golf season here. I have watched videos of the surgery itself and I rather wish I hadn't and honestly seeing the pain in your face from your early videos was difficult. I am really happy you found what you needed to fully recover and again am thankful to have found your videos.

Thank you for this, Donna! So great to see you back and doing so much better!!! I am at 7 mos. post-op now, and feel maybe around 90% healed up. But I am still trying to regain most of my strength. I had almost the exact same issues you mentioned in your previous videos (PTs not paying attention, scapular dyskinesia, etc.) so my surgeon had me stop PT after 4 months due to the increasing pain from PT (after an MRI that confirmed everything was still intact and ok). I'm mostly pain-free now at 7 months, but find if I don't keep up the stretches after a few days it begins to get stiff & achey. I will have to check out this posture realigning thing, because I know I have always had posture issues. And I am a distance runner so that definitely doesn't help my form. So thank you again for this info! Hope you are staying safe up there in NY! I am in PA and it's getting scarier by the day. Take care!

Hey! So glad that you are feeling mostly better. Postural alignment therapy is great for your situation. It is so important as a long distance runner to make sure your body takes each step on your runs correctly, and you might be surprised to see how much the rest of your body (hips, ankles, spine) is keeping you from that last ten percent on your shoulder recovery. Do you ever have issues with the hip on the opposite side of your shoulder injury?

You are my new hero. I have learned so much watching your other videos. I am in the process going through whether to have surgery or not. I think you convinced me to have my surgery. Living with pain since summer of 2019. I wish I would have came upon your videos sooner. I've been watching others since last summer but none of them have informed me as much as you have. I don't know why yours never came across until just recently.

Hello I'm glad that you are good. I would like to thank you for all the great videos. I had rotator cuff surgery in August of 2019 and have gotten better but let me tell you it's that last bit of pain and tightness that makes me so frustrated always thinking I might reinjure myself. Well thanks to all your videos I knew I was not alone. Stay safe and wow never thought I'd see a new video from you. Still waiting to be 100 percent but I'm getting there. Thanks again.

I've been following your video before my rotator cuff repair. It took 6 hours in the theatre for 2 surgeons to repair a full-thickness tear of the supraspinatus, as well as subacromial decompression and bicep tenodensis. The tear was developed gradually in about 10 years time from 4mm partial to 18mm full-thickness. When I review the course, every additional tear was made by additional physiotherapy treatments, and use of cholesterol drugs (mainly statins). Subscapularis, infraspinatus and tires minors were also very painful but the surgeon said he repaired the supraspinatus and let other muscles heal. He was right. The initial 3-month post-surgical physiotherapy was completed and the range of movement was not restored. The physiotherapist said that's all she could do. I changed to another one. 1 year past, no improvement. COVID-19 arrived and I stopped all physiotherapy. No exercise no walking. Gradually, the pain has gone. the range of movement improves by itself in a year. Now, I can hold my fists behind my butt and biceps can almost reach my ears when I hold both hands straight from the front. Not bad. My experience is, if you have a shoulder pain, do a MRI because ultrasound is not useful, and physiotherapist opinion without MRI support is not supported by evidence. "Frozen shoulder" is about the capsule of soft tissues surrounding the cuff. My gut feel of the tear was only confirmed by a shoulder surgeon, and all prior diagnosis from ultrasound were all wrong. All said above was about my right shoulder. I needed to make a choice to repair my right or left shoulder because every 2 alternate years, one side or the other would be severely painful. But after the surgeon of the right shoulder for 2 years, both shoulders have their pain gone. Thanks to COVID, I stayed home doing no exercise and had given a complete rest for the shoulders, as well as to other muscles and tendons. Also thanks to my new GP 3 years ago, who stopped my cholesterol medication completely. The fibromyalgia pain on both forearms have reduced 90%. Strengths in legs restored. So, I can conclude that the worsening of my mild shoulder tear to become full thickness severe tear has been the result of unnecessary cholesterol medication for diabetes. Hope those of you suffering from shoulder pain can learn something from my experience.

Hello Donna - I just wanted to tell you that your videos have really been a huge help to me! I am 64 and had rc repair surgery 4 mos. ago. Although I am making good progress, I am far from normal! My therapist said it would take at least a year and possibly 18 mos, so I'm trying to not get discouraged or impatient. I went into surgery with a frozen shoulder along with arthritis, bursitis AND tendinitis! And did I mention my age?! Talk about your uphill battle! Some weeks feels worse and I question my progress so I watch your videos and get re-energized! My husband will be retiring in a few mos. so I will no longer have this great insurance and I can't help but wonder how I'll get proper therapy then and what exercise protocol to continue with without professional help. Life is certainly an adventure, right? Anyway, so glad you are 100% now. I'll definitely look into that Egoscue clinic. Take care!

Thank you for these videos. I fell march 3. Surgery scheduled for March 30 then Governor cancelled all elective surgery. Who knew that elective was not just tummy tucks and eye lifts? So they may restart in May and i started searching for information. Your comprehensive video set is a little frightening to think of the long road to recovery. But at least on of my tendons is full tear so there isn’t much choice and at least its not the early 1900s when there was no solution. I am going to take the advice in this last video even before the surgery and contact egoscue. I had total knee replacement 4 years ago and it still has pain so maybe they can help that as well. At the least it should make me better prepared for the shoulder recovery. Thanks again. You have helped alot of people with this.

I can't lay on my shoulder/side for a long period of time and unfortunately I am a side sleeper so it effects that. But I'm still working on recovery and with great hope for full recovery. Wow, so glad to see you are fully recovered. Well done! Like so many of your thousands of subscribers, I recently had rotator cuff surgery, much like yours. I battled with the pain for many, many years and learned to live with it. Putting it off was easier than taking the time off of work to have it done. Unfortunately, it just got so bad, the choice was made for me. I am now at week 6, that magical number to dump the dreaded sling and time to progress to more active physical therapy, yeah! I know it will be a long and difficult journey. I prepared myself by watching videos of post operative physical therapy for each phase. But they don’t really give you insight into the progress from a pain and motion perspective, you did that. You talked about the things your doctors and therapists don’t. After watching your series of videos, I now have a better understanding of the process and pitfalls. Thank you so very much for taking the time to share your experience. Stay safe and God Bless.

Hi I want to thank you for your elaborate gradual healing after your surgery I don't like to use the word post and no one knows what it means and continuing it's great that you're feeling better although you're not showing any of your flexible range in the last video but you do say you don't have any more pain and you feel strong and of course the new Clinic that you ended up going to which gave you a more proper elaborate exercise to specific areas that they felt you were weak at I think your doctor and your physio should have picked up on that earlier but what can we do please allow me to leave you with my new philosophical saying of the year as follows the world is vulnerable from heads of states to The Peasants everyone is an idiot,, It's all hit and miss with people, no one really knows what's going on we're all out of control it's a hit and miss with everything but we need to be positive I don't use punctuations please fill them in yourself it's almost like finding an Easter egg

I really appreciate all the tips, though I have to say it is also giving me pause. I’m not sure it is worth +/- a year out of my life. The surgeons (I consulted 2) pretty much said it’s now or never. I’m 59 and still very athletic and active. Eeek, it’s just so scary, not knowing what the recovery/rehab will be like but from you and the commenters it sounds pretty bad!
