Suspect you'll miss making up those names when he's hung up the boots...I know we will! Thanks for the tip of the head to one of our greats, and thanks for the brilliant analysis. @@Formakiwi they boo'd cos they gave up and were routed for it vs Fr.. or at least how they see it (generalisation.. always exceptions) I think england played very hard. Their work rate was immense, along with their aggression at the ruk, gave Ie lots of issues. I think the biggest issue ive seen anyone having is the red card and what effect it may have had if it was, in their view, more reasonable at a yellow or warning. Madness when people think you shouldn't be punished for putting yourself in a dangerous situation and have that level of an impact to the head and get anything other than red. BoD worded why he thought it was the right call v well and other En pundits have said they are shocked he said it and argue it was just a rugby incident.. I really hope any appeal is rejected with the clarification that any incident like this is avoidable and punishable..

Pool B will be a dogfight. Tonga and Romania haven't a prayer but they'll still provide bruising physical contests, and Scotland will be desperate not to bomb in the pools for second time in a row. On recent results, you'd expect Ireland to top the pool but SA are always a stalking horse in World Cups. Regardless whoever emerges from those early rounds will be battered going into the quarters. Gonna be something.

Excellent, entertaining and informative analysis. As an Irishman, I started the game on the edge of my seat, and quickly became so nervous that I had to stand up and walk around the room, as the well-oiled machine was sputtering a bit in the opening phases. Bu Ireland had too much skill and pace, too many plays (as you have so ably described), and too much fitness, and too much desire to succumb to the pressure they were obviously feeling in front of a packed Aviva Stadium with Millions of us tuning in on TV. I picked my team of the championship, which actually honestly and objectively contained only Irish and French. There have been some pieces covering the question of how many Irish players are the best in the world at their position, and there is a strong argument that this number extends to at least a handful (Furlong, van der Flier, Doris, Sexton and Keenan), but we also had standout performances during the 6N from Hansen, Lowe, Ryan, Iain Henderson, Gibson-Park (when he got his chance), Dan Sheehan, and Peter O'Mahony who is still strong and fit and skilful enough to have kept Conan out of the starting XV. One of the great strengths of the team has become wonderful depth, as Ireland did not miss a step even after all the injury woes. The future's bright - on to the World Cup!!!

as a French fan, and considering the controversy surrounding Steward's red card, I find the references to the 2011 Finals of the RWC somewhat surprising, especially coming from such a rugby connoisseur like Sir Squidge. that 2011 game is famously known for particularly dubious referreeing from Craig Joubert, something I've seen discussed (and criticized) at length, even outside French circles. so I can't help and wonder if there's no innuendo lying underneath, or if I'm projecting too much there. congratulations to Ireland on the Grand Slam, they were a notch above everybody else, and certainly didn't need any help from the men with the whistles.

yeah the problem with the (rescinded) red was that it created space, which was exploited as the game went on, not least with England down to 13. It fucked the whole event basically, and the massive inconsistencies we're seeing do not bode well for the WC.

As an Irishman watching this game gave me so much anxiety, I was convinced half the lads had decided to play for England given that they seemed determined to politely hand the ball directly to them. HOWEVER the positive I took away from it was that even at our worst (because this was easily our worst game for quite some time) they STILL were very dominant, still creating really good quality attacks (and then immediately giving the ball away) and still overall the better team so even at us playing bad, is still playing really good.. Also huge credit to England, honestly not too surprised, I legit think if France hadn't annihilated them, they wouldn't have been as good, but they did a great job of disrupting the Irish and getting in their heads.
