There is a car company called Sandy Munro that tears down new cars to every single nut and bolt and then analyses it. Squidge Rugby is the rugby equivalent of this. Watched the game live - immediately saw the Tony Brown influence of passing literally everything and virtually no kicking - especially in the first half - however after watching Squidge's analysis I now have a much deeper understanding of how much Brown has already done in adapting the Springboks play - it's going to get very exciting - one man clean out with a back up - releasing two specifically chosen forwards to 'just' be out wide - with both their stats for metres gained, carries and players beaten outrageously improved (as if they weren't already impressive) and with a few tweeks here and there we are heading into another era of domination I believe - that last scrum leading to the penalty try was a thing of beauty - nice last touch...
@mikezog1030Ай бұрын
It seems like it would be too easy to disrupt the attack by killing the ball at source and committing two defenders to the ruck to disrupt the cleanout? It can't be that simple.

Have you ever considered making a video like "How Squidge Rugby Watches Rugby" or something like that? Because it's quite frustrating for new fans like me to watch a game, understand the rules but having no idea what to look at to start appreciating the strategy or the finer details.
@StevieC89Ай бұрын
It's hard to analyse and pick up on all the intricacies and nuance of each teams game plan during the match. It takes a deep level of knowledge and understanding to do so and it's still hard to do live. For a new fan I would recommend try not to watch and follow the ball but to force yourself to look at each teams positioning and shape. You want to try and identify the options the teams are creating at each phase and spot what they may do in the next few phases. Rugby is a simple enough game that the same things happen every time, carry, tackle, ruck. Instead of watching the ball carrier look at the supporting players and what lines they are running. Instead of watching the initial tackler(s), look at the defensive line and try to spot any gaps and how the defenders are reacting. Instead of watching the ruck, look at the attacking team to see how they are setting up for the next phase and what options are available to them etc. It not easy and takes time and experience watching each team to identify what they are trying to do and you will still miss a lot without re-watching the match and focusing on specific areas.

If this incredible match proved the Boks are the number 1 side in the world (not that it needed proving, I think that's just another narrative Rassie and the SA media concocted), I can't help but feel it also proved what an outstanding side Ireland are. With all the narratives, altitude, emotional atmosphere, pressure, playing without 2 of its most important players in Keenan and JGP, Ireland still managed to keep the double world champions to 7 points and had two tries disallowed. This weekend it will be different, Ireland just have way too many injuries now to be able to compete. I say Boks by 15 in another incredible match between two excellent worthy sides.

I would argue that South Africas style means that, even when they are completely dominant, they never completely put good teams away on the score board. If NZ was that dominant against an opponent they score 4 more tries and win by 30+ points. It's not necessarily an issue (who cares if you win by 1 every game if you win every game?) but it is a constant for them.
@kobusg7460Ай бұрын
Possibly that is why Brown has been brought in.
@malcolmcuthbertson3359Ай бұрын
A win is by how many points ? Last time I checked one point is a win , sometimes against physical sides it is better to just win than sustain injuries . Lets take the worlds greatest side playing the current 2nd best side on rankings , how much is a win ? New zealand love to score high but sometimes that strains energy levels gives injuries and possibly even cards or sightings , it also telegraphs their plays and tactics that guys like squidge and most professional teams can observe and learn from .
@mikezog1030Ай бұрын
The SA style was developed as a response to the referee interference in the 2011 RWC quarter final. It removes the risk of a ref being able to blow you out of the game. Frnkly with the new style it lets the "hitman" refs back in the door.

Don’t disagree that the Sprinkboks spoilt Irish procession, slowed the ball and monstered the gain line, but of their three tries two were from mistakes right down the field. None of Irelands 3 tries were from mistakes and they were incredibly close to scoring another two which don’t get a mention. For all their brilliance, there was a fair amount of luck won them that game.

Number of tries dubiously not given to Ireland at a neutral venue this game would of been different. That said SA playing a more dynamic style is only good for Rugby
@Forest9528Ай бұрын
@Prometuis101 none of the trys were dubiosuly not given The lowe try was scored through illegal action. No evidence to show that the ball ever touched the line for the held up call (not like it matters anyway because ireland scored 60 seconds later) I like seeing the new boks because it shows how they are clearly the best in the world. No other team can completely change styles over night and still dominate like they did. It isn't inherently good for rugby as there are many ways to play rugby and none are boring no matter what clowns want you to think
