The title on the line and the number two team in the world in town: And yet, Wales showed no signs of pressure as they overcame Ireland comprehensively, smashing their way to the Six Nations trophy for 2019. So how did they do it, and can you consider Alun Wyn Jones a religion yet?
If you've enjoyed any of the channel's content, you can also support Squidge Rugby on Patreon by visiting / squidgerugby , so I can buy more tea.

As an Irish supporter I was dreading this like a bad school report...I knew it was going to hurt but had to look . V good analysis of the match Squidge. I was lucky enough to be at the match, fantastic atmosphere, I'll never forget the Wales nation anthem, still raises hairs on the back of my neck just thinking about it. Well done Wales. I reckon Ireland are not done though. I think players and coaches are on a phased build up to world cup and 6 nations was sacrificed in that process. Hard, painful lessons learned in this 6 nations could prove v beneficial in Japan.

I agree with you - everyone knows but seems quick to forget that there is very little between the English, Irish and Welsh sides and the game comes down to what happens on the day in most cases. This year has been different as some teams blood new players for the RWC but I think Gatland has tried to build momentum and confidence in the Welsh side having already strengthened the squad massively over the last few years. I'm definitely not writing Ireland off though, they're going to be up for the world cup, no mistake.

I think we could say the same about NZ during the end of last year. They're going to be a force to be reckoned with and Ireland will need to be at their best ever plus a little luck to beat them in the world cup.

Gatland has created a possibly the most positive, unified and cohesive international squad of all time. Not just in the players, but in all staff! You get an impression that every member of the team is genuinely appreciated and acknowledged for their efforts, down to the physios, kit men, managers, pr etc etc. Gatland is a first to praise everyone else, before he takes any credit himself. There's just a massive positive ethos there. Thanks again for the awesome videos you put out. Your analysis is second to none! Go have a well earned break! 😂

Largely agree, but Ireland weren't just poor in this match. They've been weirdly out of sorts all 6 nations. They produced about 60 minutes of decent rugby against France, and that was it. Wales were excellent, and fully deserving of their grandslam. There is something going very badly wrong in the Irish camp.

I think they peaked too early. Everyone is gearing up for the World Cup. It looks like Schmidt came up with a very effective game plan and the lads got it more and more streamlined, but other teams got a a good look at it and eventually found the gaps to target. Once your system is compromised you’re in trouble. Especially when everyone has been mercilessly drilled into following it exactly. You don’t really have a plan b and if you did you’d have to go against the instincts you’ve been deliberately fostering for a couple of years. So frustration kicks in, you start doing stupid things, losing discipline, or you start panicking making mad decisions in the hope that just because it’s different it’ll be effective. Now maybe there are all sorts of tricks and alternative game plans that they’re holding on to. Stuff they didn’t want to let out too early. Maybe we’ll see Ireland suddenly change gears and start playing more like Leinster. But that feels like wishful thinking to me.

For some 6th sense reason, I just knew Wales were going to take the 6N's this season. Did I bet on it way before the start... no... just no ... stoopid! But the Welsh team brought heart and soul to a tough championship that was awe inspiring. And who would be stoopid enough not to have a wee wager on them for the WC? Seriously, with Gatland/AWJ at the helm, guy's that know how to compete with the AB's...... wouldn't bet against it. From a Scotland supporter.

Comment from an England fan; that first 40 minutes against Ireland was as close to perfect rugby execution as I can remember watching. Sure AWJ, Williams et all were exceptional but the discipline across the field was outstanding. As for all this nonsense about Wales not getting the respect it deserves, I have no idea where you lot get this from. You also have to remember all the bullshit Wales throw at England when we were winning Slams with a disciplined, defensive game...so even if you do get the occasional bit of ribbing, you bloody well earned it. Enjoy your spell at the top boys, you earned it.

@@matmul4850 mmmm, I kind of agree, especially when it comes to the English punditry nonsense but I've experienced a few too many Welsh fans spouting nonsense about English rugby for there not to be a wider cultural problem in Welsh fandom. You can read it in the comments across this string and pretty much any involving English/Welsh rugger. As for me, I consider myself a rugby fan first, an England fan second and Wales have earned their stripes this season with proper mans rugby.

I was there. I've seen Wales outplay team England for 85 minutes and then lose. I've seen Wales shove 60 points on Italy and many other games too but I've never seen such a complete team performance as in this match. Like all the other spectators on the day I thought Ireland could really spoil the party but they were completely outplayed. In the end I was bitterly disappointed they conceded that try at the end because they had played so well. There was plenty of Irish support there too but fair play to them, they were magnanimous in defeat.

That epitomized the problem with Ireland. Schmidt uses so much thought control in the game plan that when the players are allowed to play they don’t know how to do it. They are so restricted that they can’t play naturally anymore. I love Ireland but don’t like how they play. I hope this tournament will have forced them to look inward. Too many old dogs not producing as well.

Question: you mention structure a lot, what do you think of the prevalence of different structures in rugby? Do you think that there is a system which is better/stronger than the rest, and do you think modern rugby is using structure as a skeleton or has it become a cage for some teams? Also love the show, you do the best analysis around, and I can't wait for the world cup, Keep up the good work!!
