You know what's the most interesting thing about Justin Herbert? It's the poetry he inspires. Since entering the league, he's been quite a muse to his lovers and haters alike, inspiring gushing sonnets and vitriolic haikus, though the latter mostly from Dolphins fans. And it's ironic, considering he's the least interesting star athlete of all time. So why does this milquetoast all-American inspire such varied takes? What makes him such a lightning rod? Are his skills truly worthy of such a spectrum? Or is he simply just somewhere between good, bad, or even mid? Let's take a closer look at the complete opposite of the Dos Equis guy and try to answer once and for all, how good is Justin Herbert?

I like your video.. it seems some people didn't fully watch it and left a comment. I think you're spot on. Now with Harbaugh, a good defense, a running game. He's gonna be top 3 hopefully.

Herbert is an elite qb. He's not the one who is losing the games. He's the one keeping us in the game. Our defense is mid af. He deserves to be on a better team!

Na... if the D was mid they would have more wins. The D is actually straight trash. For instance this last game Herbert leads a 10 play TD drive, then the D gives up a 1 play 75yd rushing td. Herbert leads a late game drive to tie it up with clutch 4th downs then the D gives up a 40yd pass right after to setup the Lions for a game winning FG. Stuff happens all the time. Its rare for the Chargers D to do enough when it matters then if they do its the Oline giving up instant pressure. Chargers doing Charger things. Same stuff happened during the Rivers era unfortunately.

Next drew Brees, his defenses are actually worse in points allowed and yet people are like "he should just play to win" and ignore the fact that for a 27 point collapse to happen, you have to allow 27 points in a half, something the chargers are amazing at under the villain of this story: "defensive guru" Brandon Staley. The worst defense to make the Superbowl was the 2011 New York Giants, at a lowly 25 ppg allowed. Upon entering the playoffs, the giants' defense allowed just 14 ppg, which allowed Peyton Manning's mediocre brother to defeat Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers and Matt Ryan on his way to a superbowl. Brandon Staley has coached one of the most talented defensive units into the ground and then made them drill 4 spots lower to the worst defense in the league. He has arguably the best linebacker corps in the league, two excellent safeties and *had* two excellent corners until he ran JC Jackson off the team. Yet the defense is dead last in pass ypg and 2nd to last in total ypg ahead of only the broncos who are still recovering from their 70-20 whooping by the Dolphins. The only teams this year with a better record than the Chargers are the 6-3 Dolphins and the 5-5 Colts. The Dolphins are an easy one to figure out, they have a rushing offense. The colts on the other hand allow more ppg and score fewer ppg. So far their biggest wins are against the Ravens, who they absolutely stifled defensively and the Texans who were also stifled somewhat as the Texans offense couldnt finish drives and had a fumble deep in their own territory for a short TD drive. The rest of the colts wins are against some of the worst teams in the league in the Patriots, Panthers and Titans who are 6-22. The chargers losses come to the Dolphins where the OC ran the ball 40 times despite having both of Herbert's top targets in game (a sight rarer than winning lottery numbers). The defense would allow 536 yards that game. The Titans who would win by 3 points even after Herbert would drive 61 yards for a game tying field goal for OT. The defense allowed Ryan Tannehill to throw for 246 yards with an 83.3% completion percentage. Herbert played a turnoverless game. Then there were the Cowboys who also won by 3 points because the Chargers DLine somehow played a good game despite being a low point of the team. Herbert would throw for 227 yards on 37 attempts for a sub 60% completion percentage and a ypa of 6.1. Herbert would lose this game with a game sealing INT after having scored a game tying touchdown earlier in the 4th quarter. It should be noted that all of LAs timeouts were wasted before the 2 minute warning, once with over 7 minutes to play and another following a sack of Dak Prescott with 30 seconds remaining before the 2nd quarter. This terrible clock management is another staple of Brandon Staleys tenure. The KC game, Herbert had every chance to win, but in the 2nd quarter when his defense finally decided to play, he threw two picks, one which ended the game. This is really the only game he lost for his team. His rushing offense finally clicked and the defense, although allowing 24 points in the first half clamped down and nearly shut the chiefs out in the 2nd. Finally we come to the worst offense, the 41-38 loss to the Lions. The lions would have 533 yards of offense, 200 of which would come on the ground. The Chargers D would allow 6.5 ypc and 8.3 ypp. Herbert would finish the game with 4 tds to 1 int. 323 yards and a completion percentage in the realm of 65-70%. His rushing game however was atrocious again though, less than 3.5 ypc outside of his own scrambles. Herbert would stage a 14 point comeback and lead 5 straight touchdown drives to tie the game 38-38. His defense would then allow the lions to drive into field goal range almost unhindered to score a walk of field goal, completely wasting one of Herbert's greatest 2nd half performances. I dont think its fair to say "welcome to being a quarterback in the NFL" because yeah, you do play to win, but so should the rest of your team and the rest of the staff he plays for as well. I dont think that any quarterback under this regime would have a winning record. He simply plays too well while everyone else plays too poorly. His coaching staff dont draft good players, evidenced by their obsession with tcu players this year, especially that of Max Duggan. They knew that Herbert had one deep threat on the roster in Jaylen Guyton but refused to draft one in the late rounds, specifically the fastest man in the draft, Trey Palmer who fell to the 191st pick and has more yards and ypr than 1st round pick Quentin Johnston despite playing behind mike evans and chris godwin, both of which may be HoF recievers. The staff are also entirely responsible for the failure of the defense, which is as talented as any other unit in the league, and the horrible clock management, which reflects entirely on Staley himself. His run game has been below 4 ypc for 3 out of 4 seasons, meaning he constantly has to be the sole playmaker for his team. Finally the injuries. Herbert's receiver corps has for the most part been incomplete, as well as many other positions on the team and Herbert himself. He has played through broken ribs and a broken finger and still has played at a top 10-5 level, meanwhile the rest of his team has played at a bottom 5 level. I wish Herbert had never signed his new contract, there are other teams with a far better situation and less braindead coaching staff that would've gladly taken him but here we are, watching the next rendition of Philip rivers. At least he'll make the hall of fame in the end, even if he has to have every opportunity at the big game shut down by the players around him.

@arendiaz3788 the difference is Herbert played better while choking than he did while winning and Ryan played worse while choking and better while winning. I guess it's Herbert's fault that his kicker missed a 40 yard field goal when he had already made a 50 yarder that same game and was automatic at that distance all season.

ANY one CAN go & look up these facts . Injuries have killed the Chargers for the past 2 years real HARD . Which means Herbert has done way MORE , with a LOT less ON the field to help him out ! And even with much weaker teams ON the field , he plays the Chiefs , WAY better then [ ANY ] other NFL QB has done .

When you realize who Herbert has had to throw to the last two seasons it starts to make a lot more sense, even outside of his injuries. All you have to do is look at Mahomes this season, as their receiving talent drooped, to see what that does to a star QB. Do the chiefs make the playoffs this year with a bottom 5 defense like the chargers? Are the chargers drafting at #5 with a top 5 defense like the chiefs? Another key factor that wasn't mentioned in this video is the running game. It's a QB's best friend. Herbert has never had a run game he could rely on in any way. That also negatively affects play action and puts the entire weight of the passing game, as well as the entire offense, squarely on his shoulders.

Sure are a LOT of NO # 1's , I have listed here , notice I left off the NO # ! QB , too off this list ? AND if Mahomes is way more above & better then ALL QB"S . Why didn't he make his AVG WR"S much better ? Herbert's been DOING this , now , it looks like his 5 year career coming up , this year , with his NO # 1 & NO # 2 WR"S , now gone !

I ALSO would like to point out this MAJOR fact . In Herbert's 32 CAREER lost games , he has lost 14 of those games by 3 points OR less & [ 5 ] of those 14 lost games was VRS the Chiefs . You might have heard of that team the past 5 years ! Yes 14 lost by 3 points , could he have won some of those games, yes , maybe ? But , I think in the case of the Chiefs games , he did go down & get the lead , just to have his REAL [ BAD ] defense lose those games , right at the end [ JAGS ] Play off game , you see, what I mean ! Which he had [ 0 ] turn overs in & they were on the road [ 2000 + ] miles away & was the ONLY AFC Play off team that week end , that did face the starting QB of that team . 1 of ONLY 2 NFL teams to score 30 points , that week end , Jags were the only other team to do it . Bills & Bengals faced BACK up QB"S and at HOME !

Wait until after his first season with Jim Harbaugh before diagnosing what Herbert is or isn't. Herbert was a sensational rookie with Shane Steichen as his OC and Pep Hamilton as his QB coach. The subsequent three seasons he's had to endure bad coaching and a dysfunctional organization. Judge him by what he does or does not do in the Harbaugh era.

In hindsight i would say firing Anthony Lynn to bring in a complete dud like Staley has been a near disaster for Herbert's career. Lynn had the kid firing on all cylinders. It is also kinda weird how a defensive HC in Brian Flores came close to ending Tua's career and it took an offensive guru to save it while the Chargers dumped there offensive guy in favour of a defensive guy that did nothing to develope the QB. Staley just rode him as a meal ticket right from the get go.
