2007-8 were some good years in anime. Possibly even the best. Gurren Lagann Baccano! Bokurano Code Geass Sky Girls Mononoke Machiko and Hatchkin Casshern Sins Xam'd IDK. I am biased of course. WE had a lot of bombshell anime in the late 2000s like Eureka Seven, Gurren Lagann, Haruhi, Code Geass, FMA Brotherhood. All the other anime from that era is often overlooked.

Honestly, Id be willing to give Konosuba season 1 a 10. Simply because not only does it do well in every category, but if you compare it to the manga, you can see so many subtle changes that make the package so much better than it would have been leaving it pure. and having a company be that passionate about a product is always deserving a few points.

I find that opinion...interesting. Here's my take on season 1 (memory's a little vague): Story: nicely paced, some cool world building, great creative humour (the first ep still remains in my mind. One of the best opening eps I've ever seen. Blew me away), and actually subverts the isekai-genre (unlike other anime that want the cake *coughs* Re: Zero) Characters: ...Eh. Rely way too much on one gimmick, though Aqua and Kazuma never got old. Though thankfully season 2's started to develop them a little more. Themes: None (Wish more comedy anime like Shimoneta had thematic depth) Presentation: Eh, aside from the comedic expressions, which were creative and great.

According to the Production I.G. rep at Anime Expo last year, it is supposed to be a dense, cyberpunk series. You probably aren't seeing any shows worth 10 points because you have become more experienced and thus more critical.. Usually people's favorites are those series that they saw in youth or when they started to watch anime. Also, I might be wrong but it might be that you watching series back-to-back and watching whole series at once are some of the reasons why you didn't found shows that are worth 10 points. Especially because people usually take time to ponder on shows before they consider it their favorite..

I think Digi has gone far past this point already. Also, he has said himself that he gets the most out of shows when he marathons them.

Honestly not really, there's been a continuous decline of overall quality of anime since maybe 2008. He does rewatch shows, and if he still called everything this year shallow, there's likely a good reason for that.
@Necroskull3887 жыл бұрын
Tbh most of the time I watch a show weekly I like it less. There are exceptions, particularly villain of the week style shows like Jojo Part 3 and most western animation, but those are... well, exceptions. I totally get the whole 'more critical' thing though--I'm much, much more involved with video games than animation, and the last time I played a game that really felt like a modern classic that instantly entered my 'favorite games of all time' list was Undertale in 2015, and more and more I find myself playing games and thinking that this or that game might have become one of my favorites if I had played it when I was younger, but I'm just not getting the same sense of wonder as often. There are still a lot of things for me to enjoy, but even when I really enjoy a game, like DOOM, the flaws stick out in my mind as much as the good stuff once I'm done. The same amount of 8-9/10's, but much less 10/10.

I absolutely loved watching Keijo!!!! week to week. Me and my friend just couldn't wait to see what they would do. ***** Going back to anime, shouldn't anime be considered BETTER, now? Yeah, there are 100s coming out every year, a lot of which are garbage, but back in the 90s when few came out, half of those were garbage probably, too. Today, anime's animation quality has improved to great heights, and we still get those anime that are more different than the rest of the pack.

Oh my gosh I totally agree with your sentiment about 26 episode shows. Puella Magi Madoka Magica was the only show I've ever _really_ liked that was only 12, and even that show had the potential for me to like it more if it was longer. Heck, after watching that movie, I started liking the series even more, possibly just by virtue of more...stuff happening. More stuff can happen with more episodes, and I like stuff. That's probably what's going on here. 12-13 episode shows are limited in how much stuff can happen. Sometimes it's easier to make those 12-13 episodes higher quality overall, since you only have to maintain quality for that long as opposed to...say, 50 episodes. But there's still only so much you can do in that amount of time. Only so much stuff you can have happen. Meanwhile, for longer shows, sure you might have some dips in quality here and there, but at least you have more time to get to know the characters, more things are capable of happening that will test the characters, more opportunities for funny and/or dramatic moments, and hence more scenes you can remember/talk about. Stuff. Things. Plot. Characters. More of it. Can most certainly be a worthy trade off. So about 2016...I'll be honest, I did not have much time for anime this year. So I don't really have an opinion of it. Lots of my friends seemed to enjoy stuff, so that's cool. Yeah it was probably alright. Not a big fan of the "Oh no anime is dying" mentality. Because as far as that mentality is concerned, anime is dying every year. What, does it die and rise from the ashes again every year like a phoenix? ...Actually that would be pretty cool.

Do you think that anime creators are getting more skilled generally as a population? Still loving me some JoJo, sad that it's over/on hiatus :( Wanted to watch that Iron Fortress anime but don't currently have the means... Very close to finishing Season 2 of Log Horizon. I don't remember what year that came out, but I'm enjoying it so freaking much omg

I've finished 64 shows of 2016 (not all of them I consider good) and I still have to watch Fune wo Amu which I know I will like and Sangatsu. 25 of these I gave 7 and + including one 9, 8 anime I gave a 6 and everything else was a 5 and below, but the 5 being in the majority. I think the year was pretty okay. I rather would have many good shows than 2 great shows a year with the rest being meh. Also something NO ONE TALKS ABOUT which drives me insane is that this year had like the highest number in airing history, but there were only, rougly said, 3 shitty harem shows overall. The year didn't even had anything that was offensively fanserviced - I think. It was pretty calm in that sense. Also the Winter 2017 anime season airs roughly half as many shows as there were in Fall 16. I find this amazing. How did that happen. And why.
@KazeShikamaru7 жыл бұрын
I prefer ,more great shows.
@AdmiralWalrus7 жыл бұрын
eff-fume I don't know if this was the best year I've seen, but I do think it had the least bad shows. Least shitty ≠ most good, but it's definitely something to be praised. My highlight for the year was 3gatsu. Hopefully we get a second season so I can see my all-time favorite manga arc animated.

So, How Was 2016 Grammar?
@tylernelson90397 жыл бұрын
So I wasn't the only one that thought the last two years of anime were pretty mediocre? 12-14 was just excellent all around, and I don't think we've gotten much to top it. P.S. What does everyone think about 2017 so far? I've only heard about 3 or 4 decent anime so far.
@Portablesounds7 жыл бұрын
Tyler Nelson Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid has extremely well written humor and is solid all around for me personally. Little Witch Academia is all right but the past few episodes have been stale. At the very least it's more beautiful Trigger animation so I can't complain :). That's really all I know that fit my tastes.
@DoctersUnited7 жыл бұрын
Same. Compared to 2014 and the years before, the last two years have been quite disappointing for me with a few exceptions each year. That being said 2017 looks to be promising and although there haven't been any major standouts so far, I've been enjoying a lot of random, fun shows this season.
@caswellweird7 жыл бұрын
im the type to wait for an anime to finish before viewing, but ive got my eyes set on Tanya the Evil, Konosuba s2, Little Witch (whenever Netflix finally adds it), and Kobayashi. The latter of which i may drop soon. Nothing else looked that interesting.

@GothaBillsAndDeath7 жыл бұрын
I would honestly argue that because this era's more character centered than plot driven given pushing the animation to support a character's specific personality type is easier than constructing a complex narrative, we wouldn't have Better Call Saul weeb edition, Mob Psycho 100's Reigen.

I may be biased here, but I think 2014 was the best year for anime since 2007. Had a lot of amazing shows, but also some shows that had a lot of heart like No Game No Life and Zvezda. In 2016 I liked only a few titles and the rest were just edgy and generic imo. This trend seems to continue, at least for me, in 2017. I really hope Little Witch Aca and Scum's Wish are as good as everybody says.

I always struggle to find more than one or two worth watching animes a year, to make a top 20 or 30 sounds surreal to me. This year the only shows that fitted my taste were Mob Psycho 100 and Jojo 4th season.

@IllegalMemeDealer7 жыл бұрын
Fearless Jay Danmachi wasn't actually that good though. People only liked it because boob-ribbon. That's about it. I'd rather watch the worse episodes of SAO for an entire day over watching Danmachi, TBH.
@Fearless_Jay7 жыл бұрын
you have shit taste if you think SAO's better than that lol, tho to be fair, I'm a sucker for stories with a main character that starts as a nobody then work his way up into someone that was actually pretty good, I literally gave 0 shit about Hestia I thought her character was forced and completely worthless/uneeded, Aiz dynamic with Bell was far more interesting to me as a whole. I also really liked how well the powers Bell acquired were used overall, I mean it's not the best thing out there, there's definitely better but I sure prefer this over SAO where characters don't get any stronger as time goes by, feels very stagnant with no growth ever and just win through sheer bullshit, that's just disgusting, but again, might just be my opinion *shrugs*
@erejnion7 жыл бұрын
Hm. 2014 did have Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun and Hana, but 2016 has KonoSuba, which will most probably also end up as one of my all-time favourites. Hanamonogatari was one of the best and the most different arcs in the franchise, so I don't think its claim on a place in a top 20 is just because it's more *monogatari.

when otaku or hard core anime fans says " i have taste of a wide variety of genres of anime " usually means you have low standards but history shows you dont and are picky i think you have more guilty pleasure anime then most hard core anime fans you know they arent good but you still like them even thoguh many are contived cliche and more often then none ecchi garbage
@daniel0925507 жыл бұрын
That's pretty close-minded, I like a lot of different shows but theres a reason why. Do I like what it's trying to do? Does it do it well? Boom. That's all I need. How does that mean I have low standards? If anything it really means i actually understand my standards xD

I think Yuri on Ice would have been a solid 10 if it were 26 episodes. They could have stretched out their side character development and had time for some side stories with Pichit and Yurio and they would have been able to stretch out their skating between all that development and spend more time on better skating sequences.

I'm one of the people that says that anime's getting worse. Like you mentioned, the visual quality went up but the story quality hasn't. I feel like most modern anime are just focusing on style over substance. They put out interesting and colorful animation & visual concepts, but shove in shallow stories behind most of them. I just want someone to put out a story I can actually honestly give a deep fuck about. Something that I can consider great. "Good" isn't good enough for me.
