If funds permit I think a portfolio of vehicles is a great way forward for life in general, that is what we are fortunate enough to have. I am going on a trip from the UK to Spain in April this year to drive through the mountains on the north coast. No way I would have wanted to drive my TJ all that way, but fortunately I can take a ferry from the UK to that part of Spain. Can you use the Gladiator as a tow rig for the TJ? That way you would have the best of both worlds, the comfort, reliability and additional modern safety features on long distance trips. You could also then use the Gladiator as the basis for camping options. Are you thinking a rooftop tent over the bed area? But using it as a tow rig would mean you would still have the TJ with you for doing what it is best for, driving offroad. I'm guessing that is not your complete plan, given you bought the Rubicon, but it is what I think I would do. So given what I have said above my suggestion for a name would the "The Wally Hauler" 😂
@WheelinWithWally
@WheelinWithWally 11 ай бұрын
Hahaha that's a name that would get some attention for sure 🤣. I thought about the towing but I think the gladiators are rated for like 4500lbs and a tj weighs around 4k. Mine is probably more. Add a trailer onto that and that's max capacity and then some. Trying to take it out west with all the mountains would probably be to much and I don't want to beat the gladiator up working that hard. Maybe flat towing might work but that would still be rough in the mountains. I definitely have been thinking about that though. The ideal setup for the gladiator would be one of the bed camper tents that seals in the bed but has a tent on top you can access from inside the bed. But those are like 12k so probably not anything like that for awhile. The more likely option is a bedrack and my roof top tent on the bed rack and gear attached to the rack.
@eversleyowl
@eversleyowl 11 ай бұрын
@@WheelinWithWally that's a surprisingly small towing capacity. As part of my 'vehicle stable' I have a Mitsubishi pick up, that will tow more than 6,500lbs stock and it isn't class leading. Maybe the difference is the Gladiator was derived from a passenger vehicle. I don't think I have seen any of the $12k tents you described, but I have to say I think a pick up with a bedrack and a tent on top looks really sexy to me. It also means you still ge a whole lot of storage space underneath it for all your camping gear. Anyway, I look forward to seeing what direction you go. Keep making the videos, I really enjoy them.

@@eversleyowl one like this would be awesome for long trips with mostly camping in mind. Also keeps all my gear inside out of the weather. The bed rack will work fine but it won't be weather tight. gofastcampers.com/pages/gfc-platform-camper-v2

Hey Wally, I'm over here in Ohio not too far from you and have been following you a while. I also have a TJ and have been looking at gladiators. My proposal to you, if you haven't already considered it, is to use the gladiator to tow the TJ. You can kit the gladiator out for your basecamp but with its 7k+ tow capacity you'll be able to EASILY tow the TJ (I tow mine on a uhaul auto transport trailer behind my Lexus gx470 in case you might think it wouldn't tow well, TJs are super light) I'm gearing up for a trip to Moab from Ohio and I'll be towing my TJ behind my Lexus for exactly the reasons you mentioned. My wife can drive us, I can set up the Lexus to Basecamp and deploy the awning and big fridge and such.
@WheelinWithWally
@WheelinWithWally 11 ай бұрын
Hey thanks for watching and the comment! Towing with the gladiator was an idea I thought about but the towing capacity I see for a gladiator rubicon is 4500lbs and the TJ is around 4k. Mine is probably a little heavier with all the add-ons and add a trailer it would be pretty maxed if not over. Add the mountains to that and it would be pretty rough. Where did you see the 7k lbs towing?
@chrisjohnson6482
@chrisjohnson6482 11 ай бұрын
@@WheelinWithWally it depends on the model. Gas engine with auto transmission has 7k tow capacity. Check your door frame sticker to be sure but I think yours is 7k. At 7k I would have no qualms about towing even over the mountain (my gx is 6500 and I towed my 4k TJ on a 2k uhaul over the Tennessee mountains to wind rock) If you want to gain a little confidence go rent the U-Haul trailer and put the Jeep on it and drive it 4 hours away for a DBBB trip. I think you would be surprised how easy the TJ is to tow

@@chrisjohnson6482 alright hold on I'm going to go check the sticker now because that changes everything.
@WheelinWithWally
@WheelinWithWally 11 ай бұрын
@@chrisjohnson6482 it didn't say it on the door that I could see but I did bust out my manual and a rubicon automatic has a GTW of 7k. A manual is 4,500lbs. The salesman even told me it was 4,500lbs when I bought it. So looks like towing the TJ is back on the table! Flat towing would be even easier on it because I wouldn't have the weight of a trailer added on.
